Appearance - This is a nice, clear yellow in color with rising carbonation and a decent, pure white head.
Smell - There is an attractive green apple aroma here along with some grain-like character and a light spicing like white pepper and coriander.
Taste - The taste falls a little short of the smell. The apple becomes a little too tart but otherwise this is a decent beer.
Mouthfeel - The carbonation is light and lively but feels somewhat cheap.
Drinkability - This is passable for a decent gluten-free alternative to beer.

I was really interested to try this beer since I had never had a Sorghum beer before, something Ive read to be common in South Africa. Its also interesting as its Gluten free, the first Im told, in the US.
To the New Grist, the beer is apple juice in color with only a thin 1/8 inch (at its peak) white head but average lacing. No visible carbonation.
Aromas are dominated by a rather unique cereal character and followed by a mild cooked squash and vegetable oil quality.
Carbonation is mild on the palate. Body is light, mellow, and slightly creamy. Flavor is also unique. The front is a flavor that I cant recognize at all. I assume its the Sorghum. The finish resembles something like Budweiser and by that I mean that the rice is well pronounced. Hops are felt lightly on the front of the tongue
Drinkability is high as the low levels of carbonation make this brew feel almost cask like.
Overall, I like this Sorghum beer very much and find it somewhat comparable to Zwickel.

With all the talk about gluten-free beers I had to grab a single bottle to try this. Pours a golden color with almost no head. Looks like most any other golden to lighter beer in the glass. Slightly dry flavor. We had four people try this beer and didn't tell them what it was. All four thought that this was better than any of the macrobrews, and would be happy with this as a session beer. When told that this was a gluten free sorghum and rice brew, they were surprised and then commented that anyone who coldn't drink regular beer would love this.
I won't be buying this again as it is not my style, but it is good enough for most folks when compared to any of the major brands.

Looks like bmc faint yellow with clarity, no head. Aroma was artificial sweetener.
Tastes like bland cereal with water on it, not milk. Plenty of carbonation pushing the water around in here. No hops. Wouldn't argue with you if you said it wasn't beer and I tasted this blind. Sparkling ciderish. Comes off like someone is trying to get their beer below the 55 calorie line.

A - Clear light lemon with 1 finger white head with poor retention and minimal lacing.
S - An earthy sour green apple aroma. Light pungency.
T - A fruity forward sourish taste with a bit of rice sweetness and lacks much bitterness. A hint of alcohol in taste.
M - Lightest of body, moderate carbonation, pretty watery finish.
O - Not the worst light beer in the world, kind of a weird funky flavor. Sorghum probably not the safest grain to work with for beer.

This unusual sorghum beer (no barley malt whatsoever) pours a clear bright medium gold color. Head generation is minimal despite a lot of upcharging bubbles. No laces to mention at all. Odd buttered popcorn aroma, some residual sweetness is noticeable as well. Mouthfeel is light, carbonation plenty adequate. This is truly a distinct brew and reviewing it is difficult. It has an extremely artificial butter character to it, even to the point of the burnt popcorn kernels at the bottom of a microwave bag, combined with a sizzling cinnamon and over-applied vanilla second stage to the profile. The finish has a slight lactic astringency that may be similar to sour fermented porridges made from sorghum in some cultures. There's a real granularity in texture here (chalky old-fashioned antacids like Gelusil) and a strange aftertaste with a salty sweetness almost like taffy. It IS unique, but personally, I don't like it all -- practically undrinkable and one of the few beers I've ever regretted buying in a six pack.

Seriously pours as light in color as champagne, like J Roget champagne. Alot of bubbling high carbonation level, the head forms bright white and dwindles pretty quickly. Aroma has a sweet semi cider like tartness about it, that has a sliced red apple smell about it. Taste isn't beer like at all, maybe like sake light or something. Sweet wine like tart white grapes or sliced red apple juicy qualities, very palatable just doesn't taste like beer without the malt. This is for those poor folks with the gluten allergy who follow the celiac diet, actually I'd prefer this over Red Bridge. Mouthfeel is super light carbonation is a bit effervescent and the finish is dry and even wine like but quite enjoyable. Drinkability overall not bad easiest drinking gluten free beer I've tasted thus far with interesting flavor combinations.

A- This beer has a deep yellow body with a soapy white film that clings to the glass. There is a big bubble carbonation.
S- The smell of sweet raw grain and raw cereals with a slight sour note in the background.
T- This beer has the slight sweet slight tangy finish with a light spice. The hops bitterness starts to come through as it warms.
M- The medium-full mouthfeel has a tight little fizz finish.
D- This beer has a very unique sweet and sour flavor but it is not the same qualities as a wit beer. I have never tasted any African sorghum beers but this beer has really got me interested.

There's going to need to be a category for gluten-free beers. If the best that can be said about it is that it's a "vegetable" beer, we need to start thinking harder.
It's a pale yellow with a big-bubbled pure white head about half a finger's height that sinks down to foam rather quickly but holds up a film on top that manages some light spotting and a few little legs here and there.
Sorghum has always given me the impression of sweetened spent grains. I get a little of that here, but Lakefront has actually done a good job of integrating it into the beer. There's a bit of green apple skin in with the molasses along with a touch of hop leaf. The flavor brings a little more into it than the aroma, which is a bit light all around, but for a beer devoid of malts this one works. More hops wouldn't hurt people with gluten allergies, so it would be nice to throw a little more into this brew.
Light in the body without being thin, there's a kind of effervescent feel to the carbonation, and a firm crispness stays consistent with a nice smoothness. There is a particular feel that takes from the cleanness, but barely and only toward the end.

355ml bottle. Apparently this is the best-selling GF beer at my local bottleshop - time to find out what that's all about.
This beer pours a clear, very pale yellow, ginger ale-like colour, with one rather skinny finger of thinly foamy, and somewhat bubbly dirty white head, which settles quickly, leaving a low coral ring of lace around the glass.
It smells of sweet, generically fruity, um, 'grain' (likely the rice and thankfully not the sorghum), pear cider, musty white grape juice, and a bit of soft fruity sourness. The taste is more thin, weirdly glutenous grain (rice pudding flitting in and out of mind), a sweet 'n tart apple and grape fruitiness, which dovetails into cider and vinous territory as the slight booze warming takes hold, and a mild musty, dusty farmer's field essence, the top-billed ingredient not to be totally denied the floor.
The carbonation is moderate, and a little sassy in its otherwise lulling frothiness, the body light, fruity, natch, and much smoother than I was expecting. It finishes still sweet, and just a wee bit cloying, but lacking any weird off-flavours save the persistent fermented fruit notes.
While pale and light and thin...i.e. par for the course, I can't help but think better of this offering, when viewing it solely as a fruit beer, because that's mostly what I'm getting. The tactile issues still matter, of course, but I appreciate the lack of strange vegetal essences I've come to expect from these alterna-grain beers, so, overall, this is all right - I would not hesitate in recommending it to anyone with a gluten intolerance, who are cursed with wanting a beer.

Pale straw with a meringue-like head. The head dies down pretty quickly, but leaves a thin layer over the beer that sticks around for awhile. Leaves behind a pretty lace. There's something about it's aroma that I find antiseptic and unpleasant. There's some apple and lemon in the aroma as well. The apple isn't like sour green apple, but more like apple juice. It tastes lemony and sweetish, with only a little bit of apple. There some tartness and harshness to it, and that antiseptic nose seems to affect the palate as well. It really doesn't taste as bad as it smells though. Light-bodied and finely carbonated. Despite being thin and watery, it isn't very refreshing at all. I'm pretty happy I'm not on some kind of gluten-free diet. If I couldn't tolerate gluten, I'd give up beer rather than drink this.

Pours a light yellow with a small white head that dissipates rather quickly with the exception of a ring of bubbles that hang around the edges until the end of the glass. Appears to have alot of carbonation.
Very sweet smelling, smells of rice and cotton candy?
Slightly fruity with a slight metallic character. Some form of grain adds a cereal character to the beer.
Fair carbonation with a slightly thin mouthfeel.
I am impressed. Had no idea what to expect but would recommend this to a celiac.

A - Cider-like apple juice appearance with absolutely no head. Nice color, but else...no head, no floaties, no bubbles, no lace. Bohhh-ring.
S - Sweet and a little bit tangy. Has a bit of a wheat-beer-like snap in the nose. I honestly have no idea what sorghum is ...I'll have to wikipedia it, but if this is what it smells like, then I'mm assuming that it's something like wheat or rye.
T - Cider-like flavors. Sweet and twangy. Tart green apples and maybe a little citrus. I really thought that this tasted great at first, then the novelty wore of and the flavors became very boring and monotonous.
M - Thin and crisp. Extremely quenching and wet. Again, very cider-like.
D - I liked this beer alot more than other reviewers, but It's important to keep in mind that allthough I like it...it really isn't much like beer at all. It reminds me of English cider like Strongbow. This should be tried by all BA's for it's uniqueness alone.

Pours a pale golden yellow with some dish soap-like bubbly head that quickly fades. The nose smells of soap, yeast, and sugar. The taste is sweet and candy-like with some faint grassy, earthy hops in the finish. The mouthfeel is light bodied and moderately carbonated.
It's better than other sorghum based beers that I've had, but it's still not very good. The sorghum always makes the beer very sweet which in my opinion detracts from the overall flavor. I won't seek this one out again.

Appearance: This ain't half-bad. There is absolutely zero foam and almost zero lacing. New Grist is also very, very pale, almost clear. But there is something about the carbonation that I like.
Smell: There's something dry that I can't quite pinpoint. Apple? Biscuit? Cookie? Whatever it is, it's pretty decent. Definitely a good whiff of booze as well.
Taste/Mouthfeel: This tastes like Sprite mixed with Bud Light. That's actually the best way I can describe it. Ditto on the mouthfeel.
Overall Drinkability: I was interested to try a sorghum beer. I know that's popular in places like Africa and parts of Asia I think. I'm sure there are good examples, but this one doesn't work.

Interesting beer. It pours a clear golden body beneath a creamy head of bright white that holds well and leaves some nice lace about the glass. The nose offers some floral and grassy hops, and a bit of sweetness. In the mouth it's medium bodied and effervescently crisp. The flavor is sweet and malty, but not particularly grainy. Hop flavor is limited, but there's some floral character there; and a light touch of tartness as well. A fairly solid bitterness resides underneath. Still, the sweetness tends to linger. It finishes with a sweetness that's a bit sticky, but soon erodes to reveal a rough, lingering bitterness.
I'm guessing that this is made for people with Celiac's disease, an auto-immune disorder of the small bowel caused by a reaction to gluten, which i then causes gastric problems (mainly diarrhea and upset stomach) and interferes with the absorption of nutrients. If this is their only choice, I feel sorry for anyone who has it. However, I have tasted better beers made without wheat or barley.

12oz single, aquired somewhere around town and has been sitting in my fridge for a while
appearance: pours into a pint glass...as pale as can be, clear, watery straw color, light white foam head with little retention...completely unappealing
smell: faint aromas at best...apple juice?, spiced, not much else
taste: I dont even know exactly what this is but its pretty boring and watery...apple juice, lots of sweetness, green grape. Its not offensive, just an utterly useless beverage
mouthfeel: very light, moderate carbonation, tingly spice

The taste much like the aroma features some sour apples and tastes more like white wine than beer. The mouthfeel is light and extremely fizzy from the high carbonation. Overall, this is a pretty poor offering. Now I understand why malt and/or wheat is so important to beer. Not recommended. This is my second beer made from sorghum, and neither have been the slightest bit enjoyable.

New Grist is a very light gold color. It's very clear. No haze at all. It's topped with a foamy white head that's fortunate if it reaches a finger in depth. It was extremely quick to dissipate, leaving very light lacing behind. Very average.
Alright, I'll 'fess up. I have no idea what Sorghum is. The interwebz tells me that it's a safe grain for wheat allergy sufferers. Interesting. Apparently New Grist is brewed with no wheat or barley. Interesting. Let's see how it turns out.
The nose is weak and very uninspiring. It primarily smells sweet and yeasty. It's interesting in that it doesn't have a grainy smell that one would expect. I suppose that's the impact of using Sorghum instead. The more I stick with it, the more a weird, kind of funky smell. Perhaps that's the Sorghum. It's not reminiscent of anything I've smelled before, so forgive the absence of a comparison. Overall, it's anemic and below average.
The flavor profile is a little better. Enough to warrant a score bump. Nonetheless, it's average at best. It's sweet and features some light fruit flavors (apple and pear) initially. There's a distince earthy quality to it, but it's far from exciting. Sorghum doesn't add any appreciable quality to it (good, bad, or otherwise) as far as I can tell. Floral hops give it a slight buzzy effect toward the finish. More would be better. Finishes sweet. Pretty average all around.
New Grist has a light body and crisp carbonation. It's not smooth, but goes down pretty easy. Drinkability is average despite the label claim of being a "session beer." The flavor's just not quite deep or entertaining enough to be enjoyable. I'm ready to move on.
New Grist is a weird beer that's not very good. I thought it might be interesting and it is...a little. I'm intrigued by the Sorghum aspect of it. I understand the laudable goal of creating a gluten-free beer, but New Grist misses a grand opportunity to succeed. It simply lacks the ingredients. A little more malt and hops would be a nice place to start fixing it. I mean...you've come this far to create something novel for a select group of people. Why not put a little extra work into it and make it a better beer?
