The best beer ever. End of story!

I am a big IPA fan, and any time I have the opportunity to try a new one - I do. But I ALWAYS end up coming back to the Lakefront IPA.

The flavor and drinkability is exceptional and ever bottle from every pack tastes the same - GREAT!

I highly recommend this beer to anyone. I also recommend checking out the Lakefront Brewery tour (summer is best with the riverside beer garden open). (422 characters)

LAKEFRONT IPA India Pale Ale / Lakefront Brewery

AROMA: Floral herbal with citrus – mellow, not a slap

COLOR: Amber haze

HEAD: Thin but lasting with lace (in style)

FLAVOR: Follows aroma prediction perfectly

MOUTHFEEL: Heavier malty body than expected – a welcome surprise.

An EXCELLENT IPA offering here from Lakefront Brewers in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. An IPA of a very mature and a very solid character that is totally loyal to the categorical style of India Pale Ale. Everything you expect – with NO surprise. This IPA is ready to be served proudly in the kind of eating establishments that have wait staff captains, white tablecloths, silver and tables leased to motivated waiters...say a place like Nick's Fishmarket in Chicago.

If ANY of your friends OR you yourself – want to know where the core of the IPA style is – this offering is THE definition of an India Pale Ale. Keep this beer on your list to remind yourself of what a great IPA really is and where the center of an IPA's strengths really are.

Nice job Lakeland!

...too bad you're in Packer territory. (1,091 characters)

This is just an excellent IPA. Poured a nice orange color - slightly cloudy. Strong citrus taste, with hints of both grapefruit and orange. Very drinkable, with very little bitter aftertaste. Excellent citrus aroma. For a standard IPA with lower ABV, this is just a very tasty beer. (282 characters)

This is my new favorite IPA. Perfect hop blend aroma/flavor of citrus and pine, not too much of one or the other (I've grown rather tired of grapefruit beer). Bitter enough to make it an IPA, but not overpowering. The malt backbone is just enough to let you know it's there. If someone were to ask me the definition of the perfect IPA, I'd say Lakefront. (354 characters)

Well time to review one of my favorite IPAs, do not know why I did not yet....

Pours darker then most IPA's, if I had to describe it as a light amber with a moderate haze

Smell is grapefruit, citrus, a little pine and light sweet malt

Tasts is where this beer pulls ahead of most IPAs for me it is everything you want, starts out with a bitter sweetness that quickly unfolds into big citrus fruits, grapefuit and orange mostly then heads down the road to bitter dry piney finish, really world class IMO.

Mouthfeel is medium and a we bit sticky, nice drying finish... perfect

Great IPA do not understand how his is only a 88/100 but I guess to each his own!

Bottled 12/27/2012 Have had this at a lot of different "ages" does not really change much untill about 3 months out so if you see it around and it is under 3 months grab it up! (839 characters)

A: Great head retention. Really nice color

S: Extremely floral. Not a big bitter hop smell typical of IPA.

T: Very complex and big taste without overhopped flavor found in many of this type.

M: Very smooth finish for an IPA.

O: Excellent IPA. My favorite. (259 characters)

This is an excellent IPA, full of hop character dominating a firm malty character, all nicely integrated, with nicely balanced bitterness and sweetness, but with both quite evident.

Pale amber, it has a medium-big off-white head slowly shrinking to a foamy ring and wisps, leaving a little lace.

Aroma is complex and well-rounded, being very juicy with pine resin, citrus, grapefruit, spicy-herbal leaves.

Taste is a firm caramelly maltiness with a little caremlly toasty grain but also raisiny, under very nice juicy-leafy-resiny hop character that dominates with light spiciness. Grapefruit is present but restrained and, suiting my tastes, it is merely one element of a complex whole that has more citrus, general juiciness plus the resin and spicey herbal leaf. Bitterness and sweetness are firm and both are present yet very balanced and well integrated. Feel is very good, firm with faint oiliness but not oily or heavy. (929 characters)

Thanks to Jordan first for giving me a bottle of this a week ago when I was at Bella Vista [Lakefront's PA wholesaler for the Philly area]. I cracked it open immediately, at room temperature and devored it immediately. I liked it so much, two days later I bought a case.

This IPA is a darkish gold/amber color with a small white head poured into a pint glass. It smells fresh, and earthy. Impressive subtlety with presenting and maintaining the hop bitterness throughout the length of the pint. The hops taste earthy, greens, plantlike along with some citrus and traditional pine flavors. The alcohol gave me a pleasant buzz. This is a very drinkable IPA and was a hit with everybody I shared it with.

I met Orlando who is affiliated with the brewery, at the Philly Craft Beer Fest and he is a very nice guy. Good work Lakefront. (833 characters)

Had on tap at the St. Paul Fish Market.
L: Clear amber with a 1” cream colored foam cap, persists and provides thin lace.
S: Fruit and grain on the nose
T: Citrus, grapefruit, grapefruit rind, good clean malt flavors. Hops are medium to medium high but not harsh.
F: Creamy, medium body, medium carbonation.
O: I can’t think of a better beer to drink with a lobster roll. (380 characters)

12oz bottle poured into a snifter - Fridge temp - 2008

Appearance: Pours as a hazy orange beer with a small white head. Not much retention, swirling makes some lace, but not much.

Smell: Full, ripe, lemony hop aroma. A slight mineral smell along with a floral note. Very crisp smell. I like it alot.

Taste: More crispness in the form of flavor. Clean, citrushop flavors include lemon, grapefruit, orange. Just enough bitterness to make it comfortable. Very nice, IMHO.

Mouthfeel: Great, lively carbonation lasts and lasts. Bitterness is everywhere, but subdued enough to make this beer drinkable. Medium body.

Drinkability: I love this beer. It is tame, subtle, subdued and highly drinkable. The taste isn't incredibly complex but every other facet makes this beer drinkable, enjoyable and approachable for everyone. Many of these can, and will be, consumed. (863 characters)

12 oz bottle

A- pours a nice white head, that slowly dissipates into a film that creates sticky lacing.
A deep honey color with a slightly hazy body.

S- fresh citrus hops, tones of lemongrass, light tabacco, hints of apricot and peach, a very sweet earthiness. Maybe a slight biscuit malt smell but mostly dominated by hops.

T- sweet lemongrass, and a Perfect amount of alcohol to start. Finishes dry with a earthy finish. Slight bitterness at the end, with the sweet lemongrass biscuit aftertaste lingering.

M- light to medium carbonation, a bit thicker than most but finishes nice and dry. Full bodied and refreshing. In one word, smooth.

O- spectacular balance in all elements. This brew should be double the price for its quality and complexity. Perfect amount of alcohol is the strong point. Most IPA's drown out the alcohol with harsh bitterness. This brew lets you taste it and complements it with sweet biscuit and hop flavors. Truly a gem in the ipa market. (975 characters)

A- Light golden color, semi-clear, one finger thick fluffy white head that lasted the entire time, lots of tiny bubbles rising throughout

S- Citrus, grassy, earthy, light flowery hops

T- Pine, citrus, honey, grassy, pale malts, flowery hops

M- Medium body, low/medium carbonation, very smooth, clean, light bitter bite

D- Definitely worth buying again

Not too many different flavors in this one... but wow. The brew has the perfect balance of hops (not too much and not too little). I really wish I had bought more of these when I was in Milwaukee. (553 characters)

Pours a very cloudy golden orange, lots of yummy sediment and particles can be seen floating throughout the beer. Nice finger worth of white head that stays put.

Total floral boquet of hops in the smell. Up front I smell scents of very fresh, moist marijuana. Citrus and pine are certainly present. some toasted caramel malt in the back as it warms. Very potent aromas.

Grapefruit, Grapefruit, Grapefruit. I get a ton of juicy hop flavors without a ton of bitterness. the malts do well to balance this hoppiness, because it's not a sharp flavor, it's very well rounded and blended. Honestly, this is an incredible tasting IPA.

mouthfeel is smooth, crisp, and juicy. Medium bodied and perfectly carbonated.

Highly drinkable, I picked up a six pack last week and have been savoring it ever since. I will definitely be back for more, I could easily have several of these in a night. (883 characters)

Served on tap at Lakefront Brewery in Milwaukee, WI. Poured a cloudy dark orange body with a thin white head. Aroma is piney and spicy hops. Medium bodied with great hop flavor and a malt character that backs it up well, yet keeps the hops at the fore front. Excellent drinkability from this IPA. (296 characters)

Appears a golwing orange semi clouded with yeast sediment, light orange tinted cream head forms thick and billows above the edge of my glass. Aroma has sharp grapefruit and floral with earthy hops bursting, layers of sugar coated hops have existed with layers of the pale malt biscuit qualities. Flavor has piercing hop bitterness that comes through with citrus and floral hop flavor, semi sweet malt ridden with a hop combo. This is my kind of hoppy IPA. Mothfeel is medium bodied slick with hop oils perfect carbonation level compared to those other IPAs, go tell your friends about this one. Lakefront IPA may be one of the most drinkable versions I've come across pure lovely hop combo with pale malt sweetness to back it up. (729 characters)

A- very clear light orange, dark yellow

S- outstanding, I get hops and malt all together, neither is overpowering or aggressive

T- outstanding again, great citrus hop smell, full malt that lends to a great hop bite with lingering (but not too much bitterness)

M- full, great carbonation, full mouthfeel, but still light hoppy and great overall

O- go buy this beer, if you can find it on tap I can only imagine that it will be one of the best IPA's that you have ever had. (475 characters)

Bottled week 1 of October 2011 and poured into a Samual Adams perfect pint.

A - Golden with some orange highlights. Some floating debris haze. Big pillowy white head full of tiny bubbles that receed to a small but prevalent cap of foam that clings to every inch of the glass.

S - Big pine/citrus hops. Even some slight tropical fruit smells. Very green dry-hops. ++++

T - A little bit of some biscuity/bready malt is quickly swallowed up by great pine, and mildy herbal flavor. But the finish is its best feature. Its big and bold hop flavor is quickly quieted to a nice crisp/drying bitter finish without leaving your taste buds begging for mercy.

M - Medium bodied, moderate carbonation

O - I would by the sampler 8 pack all over again for the IPA alone. I was enamored with how hoppy the beer was in smell and flavor but still sessionable for a hot summers day. (871 characters)

Malty looking, Nice head, dissipates pretty fast.

Amazing smell! I can smell it from three feet away! Great grapefruit smell, quite danky.

One of the best off the shelve IPAs no questions asked. Great danky, hop taste. Citrus goodness, cant get much better than this.

Not too much carbonation.

Overall, I think this is a great IPA definatly recommend trying it. So underated I think. (387 characters)

Poured into becker pint glass. Slightly cloudy yellow-orange with a thick dense white head that isn't going anywhere. Leaves tons of lacing as it (very) slowly fades. Smells of all hops, mostly sweet fruity ones. Taste is very clean and crisp, with clear crackery malt but lots of hop flavor too, although sans the bitterness. A delicious take on the style, hoppy but not palate-destroying. (390 characters)

Serving type: 12-ounce bottle. According to the notches on the side of the label, this beer was bottled during the third week of February (2012?).

Appearance: Straight pour into a tulip. The color is cloudy light amber/orange. A finger of off-white head dissipated fairly quickly to leave a bubbly cap, a ring around the edge, and some trails along the glass. I can see tiny bits of yeast hovering in the beer.

Smell: Lots of smooth and tame citrus — grapefruit, orange, lemon — which balances well with pine spice and a solid base of caramel.

Taste: Very well balanced. Everything from the smell is present — the fruit citrus as well as the pine and caramel base — and the hops are riding shotgun. Though it does not pack a powerful punch, it does offer hoppy astringency. It is very smooth and easy drinking for an IPA. As it warms the booze becomes noticeable, but faintly.

Drinkability: This is definitely not a one-trick-pony, kick-in-the-face IPA. Instead, this is a solid, well-crafted beer that is very drinkable. (1,033 characters)

Murky looking dark amber. Thin off white head. Lace is moderate. I love this hop aroma. It's piney, but it's also pungent, oily and resiny. On the palate, I notice a nice malt base with the toffee and caramel. Big and full bodied feel to this beer. Viscosity is on the high end of the spectrum. Hops give this beer a lot of character. This is unique in a way because of the emphasis on the dirty, grimy greasy characterstics of the hop flower. Oily and pungent. A little of that bong residue feel to it. And some pineapple juice as well to cap it off. I like it. Haven't reviewed a Lakefront beer in a long time, but this one is pretty damn good. (646 characters)

From BeerAdvocate Magazine Volume II, Issue V:

Huge pillowy off-white head forms from a normal pour, and the hops have a say in all of this as the retention is spectacular. Weathered copper color with a perfect clarity. Smells of pine, mint, hemp oil, lemongrass and blonde tobacco from the hops ... not much from the malt which screams IPA. Medium body seems a tad thicker from the hop oil on the palate that creates this deep smoothness. Surprisingly, not a ton of bitterness, which is nice, as the complex hop flavor dominates throughout with thick herbal, faint pine, grapefruit peel, crushed hemp seeds and mint. The malt character tried to get a taste in edgewise and succeeds by a pinch with a clean and sweet biscuit tone. All of that is smacked down by the hops again. Finishes slightly bitter with a long road of hop flavor that just sticks to the palate.

This IPA outshines most as it drops a load of flavor yet keeps the bitterness in check so you can actually taste the beer rather than your taste buds being numbed by excessive amounts of alpha acids, the bitter oil from the hops. Hopheads need to seek this beer out. (1,134 characters)

12 oz bottle poured into a Lakefront imperial Pint.
Bottled during May Wk2 (2012) notched on label.

A - Pouring slightly hazy golden amber in color with a foamy white head, Lakefront's IPA retains it's head respectably while circling the pint with delicate collars of lace.

S - Certainly hop-forward, assertive pine and bright citrus aromas erupt from within Lakefront's IPA. While not without a malt base, it's hard to detect much more than some trace caramel sweetness from behind the delectable hop aroma. A very slight touch of alcohol can be found in the finish, just as the glass pulls from your mouth.

T - A very good balance of malt and hop action, Lakefront IPA starts malty sweet with caramel notes and slight graininess and moves quickly into a piny citrus hop flavor that finishes crisp and refreshing. Notes of fresh grapefruit and dried apricot add depth to the hop flavor.

M - Sporting great balance, IPA features a nice smooth mouthfeel with a decent carbonation crispness, all ending with a dry, bitter kick that brings you back in for another sip.

D - Lakefront nails down an easy drinking, almost dangerous IPA that's full of the hop-head's dreams; pine and citrus abounding. Plenty of balance makes this a tasty treat that, despite the higher alcohol level, is rather sessionable! (1,305 characters)

Poured into a snifter. Label says bottled during the 4th week of July.

A- Sitting for close to 6 months hasn't done a thing to the carbonation. From a heavy pour comes a two finger white head that retains a good while, slinking down to a full inch and is billowy with great lacing as well. Many minutes later, the head's still going strong. Nice! Has a light copper color.

S- Glorious. Fresh, wet, floral hop aromas flow from the snifter bringing to mind grapefruit and pineapple plus a slightly astringent smell that I chalk up to the alcohol mixing in with the hops.

T- The taste is much more balanced with the malts stepping up to the plate while still letting the hops do their job. Notes of fruit and grass are abound in this fine example of a single IPA. Damn near perfect if you ask me. The only thing keeping it from 5 stars is the aftertaste is a tad metallic. Other than that, super solid!

M- Medium-high carbonation. A bit slick from the hop oils. Medium body.

O- This is fantastic. Lakefront is quickly becoming one of my "breweries to look out for in 2012." (1,076 characters)
