12 oz bottle dated wk1 of April (no year, but new to place of purchase in summer 2012) poured into snifter.
A - pours a cloudy orange-brown with a light tan head. The head is small to begin with and reduces to little more than a ring in no time. Spotty lacing is left on the glass. Appearance is not the strong point of this beer.
S - From the bottle, this has a striking and surprisingly strong aroma of hops. Once decanted, a complex and earthy aroma of herbal and piney hops can be detected from a distance. Caramel malt is also quite evident. There are also some grassy and citrus notes.
T - Very flavorful! What would normally be a solid and dominant malt base actually serves as the background to a complex array of hop flavors, including piney, floral, citrus and herbal. Likewise, this sweet-bitter balance is decidedly won by the bitter components. There's also a light, fruity tartness.
M - Medium body; light-moderate carbonation; dry finish.
O - Fixed Gear is a bold red with a far more forward hop profile than usual, especially in the aroma. Best to think of this as a red APA, it is moderately bitter rather than slightly sweet. As hoppy as many IPAs, this is easily recommended as a "red ale" for hop heads.

It's a nice reddish orange with a quarter inch head that hangs around. Nice lacing also. Malts are in the forefront of the nose. Has a candy malt smell actually. I like the fact that hops are intertwined with the malts in it's taste. The malts definitely hit the tongue first but with a sudden instance the hops reveal themselves. The mouthfeel is moderate. Will visit this again as I like hops and in my opinon this is a hoppy red ale, not overdone with hops but nicely done.
