Poured into tulip

A: A heavy pour leaves me with a pretty clear amber beer with streaming bubbles and a two inch beige head with large bubbles that slowly pop and decrease the height of the head.

S: The aroma is a very even blend of sweet malts and citrus hops. The citrus is forward but soft, very grapefruit like and the malts impart a definite caramel aroma. There's also some strange spiciness in the smell.

T: The flavor is quite muted. Not what I was expecting. It starts with some of that spiciness and grapefruit but then quickly turns sweet and finally leaves an unfavorable aftertaste of cracker. It's completely awful but based of the smell I thought it would have a little more punch.

M: Possibly the weirdest part about this brew. I don't know if they intended on making it lighter than most in it's style so bikers could chug it after a ride but it's a little off putting. It's very bubbly on the tongue and then finishes disappointingly thin.

D: Below average. The body is drinkable but the flavor is not something I would want to experience much more than this bottle.

O: I gotta say the name/label caught my eye and I probably wouldn't have bought this beer otherwise. As far as the beer goes, I feel as if it is very forgettable and I'm glad I have a Lagunitas Lucky 13 in the fridge and I live in the state of Surly Furious. Won't buy again.

12 ounce bottle into tulip glass, bottled on 12/11/2013. Pours moderately hazy/cloudy deep red-orange color with a 2 finger dense light khaki head with good retention, that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Nice soapy lacing clings on the glass. Aromas of caramel, toast, brown sugar, biscuit, tangerine, grapefruit, orange peel, citrus rind, floral, grass, light pine, and floral/toasted earthiness. Nice and pleasant aromas with good balance of dark/bready malts and citrus hop notes; with solid strength. Taste of caramel, toast, brown sugar, light biscuit, tangerine, grapefruit, orange peel, floral, grass, light pine, and floral/toasted earthiness. Fair amount of floral/pine bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of caramel, toast, brown sugar, tangerine, grapefruit, orange peel, floral, grass light pine, and floral earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Nice robustness and complexity of dark/bready malt and citrus/grassy hop flavors; with a good malt/hop balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Medium carbonation and body; with a moderately creamy, smooth, and lightly slick/sticky mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is well hidden with only a slight warming present after the finish. Overall this is a nice amber ale. Good balance and robustness of dark/bready malt and citrus hop flavors; and very smooth to sip on. A nicely enjoyable offering.

I'm drinking my second bottle of this as I type this review. The first bottle was consumed about one week ago. I very much enjoyed it, but failed to take any notes on the drink.

Appearance is garnet colored in body, with a scant and quickly fading off white head that leaves little trace of lacing. The body presents with moderate unfiltered murkiness that reminds me of thick, rusty water. The color is certainly pleasant. Not unattractive. Perhaps a thicker, lasting froth would add to the character. But then I don't know how accurate that would be for the style.

The smell is hop forward with a powerful pine note. Brief waves of roasted malt and metal rise up in the background, just above citrus notes in the far distance.

Flavors are rich, biting, bitter...followed by bread, a little sweetness, then ending in a dry finish. Swallow is crisp.

This is obviously a hybrid style, which leaves more room for creativity. Without a need to criticize for authenticity I can only say it is an enjoyable hop heavy beer. I would gladly buy this again.

It's a nice reddish orange with a quarter inch head that hangs around. Nice lacing also. Malts are in the forefront of the nose. Has a candy malt smell actually. I like the fact that hops are intertwined with the malts in it's taste. The malts definitely hit the tongue first but with a sudden instance the hops reveal themselves. The mouthfeel is moderate. Will visit this again as I like hops and in my opinon this is a hoppy red ale, not overdone with hops but nicely done.
