this was also the first pumpkin lager of the season for me... and i admit i was excited for it. poured out into the pint a lustrous orange-amber with a very dense 1/2" layer of microfoam across the surface that remained until the glass was finished.

smell... since i thought it might be my first review, this is the first time i really paused to smell a beer before i took a sip... and i'm not sure how to describe it. roses came to mind. the sweetness of this particular batch really seemed to take over... but without being overpowering.

which brings us to taste... the sweet pumpkin really seemed to dance throughout. i caught none of the spiciness that others described; and that i expected from previous experience with this beer. to my palate, the flavors were perfectly balanced. (note: i had brushed my teeth about a half hour beforehand and could still taste some mint from that, so it may have masked some of the spices others mentioned.)

mouthfeel: this beer was smooth... notable carbonation, but distributed well throughout each sip and gives it more of a creamy texture than anything.. each sip accompanied by some of that thin layer of microfoam from the surface.

drinkability: i'm about to have another. and then possibly another. this is one of my favorite beers, hands-down.

also to note: i agree with the person who mentioned that some batches are different than others. i was elated with this last beer i poured out, but would not give as high a score to other batches i've tried. still, lakefront's pumpkin lager won me over the first time i tried it... and it's something i look forward to every season.

12 oz bottle poured into a Lakefront imperial pint.
6.0% ABV, Bottled 08/29/13

A - The brilliant color is a light amber pumpkin orange and crystal clear with pale yellow highlights and lazy but steady bubbles rising up. A cream-colored head billowed up to two fingers and slowly went down to a thin blanket of foam leaving a ring of legs.

S - The immediate realization from the first sniff is that this pumpkin lager is much different than the usual pumpkin ales. It's muted aromas are more crisp and mellow with spice being the most prominent on the nose with dashes of cinnamon and nutmeg and a pumpkin aroma following closely. A touch of caramel malt is in the back, grounding the beer with no hops evident.

T - The taste closely mirrors the aroma with spices being the first noticeable flavor - nutmeg and cinnamon - but the pumpkin flavor is the most prominent and lingering aspect of the beer. A touch of caramel and a light kiss of hops are present, leaving the beer orchestrated very well; think diet pumpkin pie - great, natural flavor but not incredibly rich like normal pie.

M - Lakefront's Pumpkin lager is smooth, on the verge of being creamy, but still crisp and refreshing. A small carbonation bite gives a little kick at the end of this medium bodied lager which has just a slight dryness to the finish and lingers with pumpkin and spice on the tongue.

O - Lakefront Pumpkin Lager is a exceptionally crafted pumpkin beer that takes the richness of pumpkin ale and drops it back a few notches, creating a great start-of-fall beverage that's still drinkable and refreshing in warm weather but, with the pumpkin and spice, remains great when it cools down. Also a good "beginner" pumpkin beer for those who want to get their feet wet, and one of my personal favorites of the season!

I had this beer at the Institute in Philadelphia on draft. I have to say this was hands down the best pumpkin beer I've had this year (which includes, Southern Tier's Pumking, Dogfish Head's Punkin Ale, and a couple others that escape my memory). Lakefront's pumpkin beer is smooth with a real pumpkin flavor without being too sweet. Most of the others were only vaguely pumpkiny with the alcohol and spices drowning out the pumpkin flavor. this one highlights the pumpkin flavor without overburdening it with high alcohol or choking the flavor with spices.

The Friendly Greek recently had an entire cooler set aside for this year's pumpkin beers. I bought as many different ones as I could and I am now working my way through them between Hallowe'en and Thanksgiving.

From the bottle: "Brewed in Milwaukee for people who like beer."

I like beer, so this should be right up my alley! I gave it a good heavy handed pour, resulting in two fingers of creamy, tawny head with great retention. Color was a pumpkin-like orangish-amber (SRM = > 7, < 9) with NE-quality clarity. I know that 8 is between 7 and 9, but my card does not have that shade. Nose was VERY spicy, cinnamon, clove and ginger being prevalent. Mouthfeel was much fuller than the Stoudt's pumkin lager, giving this one a creamy aspect. The spices were just right, not overwhelming and by closing my eyes, I could imagine drinking a cool pumpkin latte. This is a great pumpkin lager, but don't tell Linus or he might be panicked! Get it, a Great Pumpkin lager? Finish was semi-dry, but because they showed some restraint at the spice shelf, it was not as dry as it might have been.

Poured into a Lakefront pint glass.

(A) Pours a dark orange with some copper spots. Very little head.

(S) Nutmeg, cinnamon, and a decent dose of pumpkin. Has a really great aroma to it.

(T) Big on spice. Has a lot of nutmeg and cinnamon up front. The pumpkin is almost not very prominent because of it. Spicy all around with pumpkin mid-taste. Tastes like pumpkin pie, excellent.

(M) Kind of grainy, medium body. Has some spice that hits the palate.

(O) This is what pumpkin beer should taste like. One of my favorites. Just like pumpkin pie. It's right up there with Pumking, in my opinion. One of the top pumpkin beers on my list.

Pours a huge, dense, white head that collapses into a soapy white, half-inch foam. Wonderfully spicy aroma dominated by spice, with a touch of pumpkin behind it all. Amber-orange color. Starts off with spice and carbonation, the clovier-spice takes hold until the biscuit malt comes into play with the pumpkin; pumpkin pie or spiced cookies - this is the main flavor profile. The spice mutes as the finish comes on, then it's lingering pumpkin malt.

I absolutely love this one. One of two (Southern Tier "Pumpking") pumpkin biers I will drink. The addition of pumpkin to the mash allows this lager to showcase the pumpkin with a clarity that is unparalleled. This bier made me like pumpkin pie. When I drink this, I know it's Autumn.

12 oz. bottle,

A: Pours a hazy, but bright orange, with a thick white head which stays for the whole glass, fair lacing.

S: Smells of pumpkin and spices, as expected, quite fragrant, actually.

T: Full flavour of pumpkin and spices such as cinnamon, nutmeg, and all-spice. A little on the artificial side, but overall, one of the better pumpkin beers I have ever had.

M: Light, smooth, needs a little more body.

D: Overall, very good. We don't get many pumpkin beers here in the Southland, so it was nice to see another one, and a good one to boot.

Edit (10/2/11) - Had this one much fresher, some I'm upping some scores.

From tasting notes 10-19-11
Poured into a warbled mug

Appearance: Slightly cloudy (perhaps some chill haze) orange-amber beer with a tall foamy cream head. The head settles slowly and has a thin ring of head retention and a very small amount of spotty lacing.

Smell: I can definitely smell it is a lager-it's got the characteristic clean, crisp malt in the background; however, this beer has pumpkin, nutmeg, and cinnamon cloves that take the show. It smells like a baked pumpkin pie.

Taste: Tastes like pumpkin up front, and finishes with the spices previously mentioned (nutmeg, cinnamon, cloves) and has an amazing finish. The aftertaste is crisp clean pumpkin pie.

Mouthfeel: Light body with medium carbonation and a smooth, very drinkable finish.

Overall: This beer is very well-blended and mellow. Nothing is overpowering or out of balance/proportion. A rarity among pumpkin beers!
