Review from BeerAdvocate Magazine Issue #55 (August 2011):

Perhaps the fastest-growing beer style to date, the American Black Ale. Lakefront did not play around—black as black, with a killer lacing. Slight roast in the nose with a thick blanket of soft hop resin and faint ripe fruit. Minty and tobacco aroma. Moderate-sized body, more than enough smoothness to go around. Smacks of hops, but with a smat- tering of roasted grain and ripe fruit, this beer is more complex than just darkness and hops. The hops do, however, provide a pretty intense trail for the taste buds to follow. Minty hop finish with some lingering roastiness. The brewer definitely has a firm grasp on this style.

Poured from 12 oz. bottle into pint glass

A - A inky body with a thick and foamy caramel-colored head. When held up to a light, the body had a mahogany hue.

S - Fresh-cut grass, grapefruit, and strong pine resin odors. Just a hint of smoke.

T - Grapefruit and tobacco are the predominant flavors to hit the tongue first. Then comes the malt, which has a burnt-toast sort of taste and isn't overtly roasty. The finish is dry and immensely piney, with a bitter and astringent aftertaste.

M - A notable creaminess from the carbonation when you sip it. However, despite this, the body seems a bit thin for the style.

O - Not a bad take on the black IPA style, but certainly not the best. The hop character is definitely old-school pine and grapefruit, which isn't a bad thing and is actually kind of refreshing these days. However, the body isn't robust enough to give balance to the hops. While certainly worth a go, IBA is noticeably inferior to Lakefront's wonderful IPA.

My favorite Lakefront to date. Very original, very tasty, one of the best in this rising popular style?

A: Black enough for me, shades of walnut when tipped. Smallish short lived head with tons of lacing. Sticky.
S: Aroma is the weakest point in my pour. Char, mint, wood, and some citrus. Like the smoky.
T: Continues with the smell but ample: Agree on it's a dark bread malt, layered with mint leaves, smoked meats, and orange rind. A masculine flavor and something minerally, mysterious and good in the mid-palate and the finish. Lovely, long lingering hop finish. Totally original.
MF: Balanced mid-weight, lots of carb tingle.

Overall: Could be a bit bigger, but it's a beer i want to turn my friends and local brewer (CARTON) on to. Good sign. Must try.

A beautiful blackish pour into a tulip glass. Two fingers of off-white head leaves copious lacing.

Starts out big, though peters out in the finish. Smooth, a bit sweet, roasted grain fills the mouth. The soft hops from the aroma appear politely in the middle. The flavor kind of disappears on the backend, though not in a terrible way.

Quite good. An excellent everyday brew. Priced just right at $9/6-pack (way overpriced at $5 for the bomber). Too bad it's not available year-round, as it would be a welcome hit of sweet roastiness in summer, while still refreshing with its lighter body and crisp carbonation. Another very good Wisconsin black ale. Nearly as good as New Glarus Black Top and Radio Free IBA (Lake Louie), but those two are a cut above this one.

12oz bottle poured into nonic pint. Bottled on 12/24/13

A - Black but not opaque; great clarity. Tight, two-fingered cap of tan head holds strong. Sticky lacing all the way down.

S - Bright balance of pine and citrus American hops. Munich-like caramel malt gives beer unique dimension.

T - Juicy citrus hops from front to back. A small bit of caramel malt shows up just past midway down. The bitterness is consistent throughout its entirety. Finishes with some lasting pleasant hop flavor.

M - Medium body, medium-light carbonation, dry.

O - The first pour was absent of all yeast and therefor seemed to lack a backend bitterness of a traditional IPA but after pouring the slurry, the yeast added some bite helping it perceive to be more bitter. Body seemed to be a little on the light side. Superior aroma and taste.

Recommendation - An excellent, easy to find IBA in either 12 or 22oz options.

Appearance: Pours a cola brown color capped by a a full inch of foam; nice retention and attractive lacing

Smell: Floral, minty and citrusy, with undertones of pumpernickel

Taste: Pumpernickel and a hint of caramel make up the malt bill, with the minty and citrusy hops building through the middle; nicely balanced through the finish, although it does lean toward the hops in the aftertaste

Mouthfeel: Light to moderate body with moderate carbonation

Overall: This is a very easy drinking ABA, with a very nice flavor profile; could be a bit bigger and would love to see Lakefront brew an imperial version of this beer
