From BeerAdvocate magazine Issue #67 (August 2012):

LOOK: Fizzy lace, big bubbled, cloudy straw

SMELL: Chalky yeast, mineral, peppery phenols, taffy, ripe fruit, grainy, floral

TASTE: Very crisp, long slickness, wet body, very grainy, crackers, overly yeasty, spicy, very dry, salt, dried grass, modest hopping, faint esters, powdered clove, banana pith

Respect for Lakefront for brewing with all local ingredients. Unfortunately, the beer lands, at best, within the middle of the pack for the Hefeweizen style. Lacking head retention due to an overly expressive yeast takes away from this beer and the drinkability it should wield. Good flavors here and there, but nothing really seems to mesh 100 percent. Perhaps this beer should be marketed as an American Farmhouse Ale?

12 oz bottle with only the WK3 marked on the label, but certainly from 2013.

Pours hazy golden with a towering, and over-zealous head that quickly dies to a top coat.

Somewhat unappealing aroma, although this is my usual reaction to this style. There's less over-ripe banana and more lemon here than usual, but still a bit of barnyard and too much soapy floral aroma. The smell did not improve with warming.
The taste is better, with mainly a tart citrus-wheat flavor.

Lively carbonation in fairly light bodied beer.

O: a 100% Wisconsin beer that is a little distinctive. Worth a try if you usually like saisons.

Poured into tulip glass.

A: Orangish-red. No lacing

S: Rich, citrusy and clean.

T: Spicy and sweet. Orange and cloves

M: Perfect for a wheat beer. Sully and syrupy but not overwhelming.

O: A totally decent beer for late-afternoon summer drinking. I should look for it in six-packs instead of the one available in the 8-beer variety pack.

Try it again? 4 - Probably

355ml single bottle. Wisconsin in a bottle, eh? At least it's not from Minhas.

This beer pours a hazy medium golden straw colour, with two fingers of thinly foamy, puffy white head, which leaves little in the way of persistent lace around the glass as it quickly sinks away.

It smells of pale, grainy wheat stalk, gamey yeast, a mild drupe fruitiness, some further citrus zest, and a muddled coriander/pepper/clove spice. The taste is somewhat edgy wheat grain, a more restrained earthy yeastiness, some tame, though weirdly sweet coriander, black pepper dust, and rounded citrus pith.

The carbonation is fairly soft, and understated, the body medium-light in weight, and really quite smooth. It finishes mostly dry, the wheat, fruity yeast and spice conspiring to blot out any aspiring sweetness.

Not a bad Hefe, the constituent (Wisconsin!) ingredients doing well by their native state to produce a drinkable and enjoyable summer wheat beer, with strong allusions to their German heritage. Too bad I didn't get this until the onset of winter up here. Oh well.

Lakefront Wisconsinite Summer Weiss Beer
12 oz. brown glass bottle, "BOTTLED 06/05/14"
$1.99 @ Total Wine & More, Cherry Hill, NJ

Unfortunately my sample's a little old at 165 days / 5.5 months. There's a little bit of sourness to it that I don't think is supposed to be there (although I'm not sure), and the yeast flavor (as in actual yeast) is fairly strong. I'll have to sample this again next year, but for now I think I can work around that.

It's got a great appearance with a yellow-gold body beneath a bright white head that's bolstered by quickly rising bubbles from below. Unfortunately I think that both the head retention and the lacing could be better.

Discounting the yeastiness in the nose, it's fairly clean, offering up sweetish malt and notes of bubblegum/clove. There's some fruitiness to it as well, with perhaps pear, apple, and a hint of citrus.

Once again forgetting about the yeastiness, the flavor is quite solid. It's basically broken into two components that mesh together quite well. One the one side you have the distinctly wheat-accented malt base, and on the other you have the yeasty phenolics. The malt is sweetish, but not "sweet", and there's a moderate amount of bitterness to balance it. The light tartness helps to balance it (although I'm not sure if that's intended, if it's coming from the yeast, or if it's due to age); it's not imposing, and it's certainly acceptable for the style. As a "summer weiss" I think it lends a refreshing edge. The yeasty phenols don't give me any banana but I do get lots of clove. There's also a fruitiness that I can't quite pinpoint, although apple and pear would certainly be apart of it. I hesitate to say it, but it's almost like a dull pineapple. There's a subtle peppery spiciness, and some floral hops help to round it out as well.

The body is medium-light, and it's fairly effervescent, giving a good zest as it crosses the palate. Once warmed, it becomes softer and smoother.

Overall it's quite pleasant, and I can see how its lighter body, somewhat restrained character, refreshing splash of tartness, and lower alcohol (4.45 abv) would make it a great summer beer. I'll definitely look for this again!

A: Cloudy and yeasty; golden hue with an enormous, billowing cream-colored head; okay lacing

S: Lots of spice: cloves and peppers along with bananas, lemon rind, citrus; this smells like a traditional hefe with a pleasant slightly bready malt undertone

T: Not quite as pronounced spice and banana in the flavors as in the aromas; more of a pronounced grainy, bready, and grassy malt presence

F: Pretty creamy and light bodied like a typical hefeweizen

O: I found Wisconsinite to be extremely refreshing and drinkable; delicious and true to the style; one of my favorites from Lake Front and one of my new favorite hefeweizens brewed in America

Big head on a bubbly, hazy straw colored body.
A pleasant aroma of straw, bananas and yeast.
The taste has some unbalance to it. Mild lemon bitter, a touch of pear, a little metallic...
The texture is crisp with moderate carbonation.
It's not bad, just not that great either.
