Served in a Lagunitas mason jar.

No one at my local haunt knew much of anything about this beer, so I knew I had to take on the mantle of the guinea pig. It's a dirty job... This stuff pours a very deep black-brown topped by a finger of brown foam. The nose comprises perfume-y dark cocoa, a kiss of coffee, and a melange of raisin, Port, and plum that seems to wash o'er all in perpetual waves, allowing the usual stout notes only pockets of airy freedom. The taste starts off on a dash with the cocoa, some roasted malts, and a hint of vanilla. Still, with the heft of the beer, the taste is more of a marathon, with the prune-y and Port-y flavors holding tight with the early leaders near the finish line. It's better, but it's still odd, resulting in me thinking "It's just...lacking..." The body is a hefty medium, with a light carbonation and a thickly-creamy feel. Overall, this one just didn't do it for me. The weird fruity notes detract from what seems like something that could have been a pretty solid stout. This must be the liquid equivalent of those awkward anniversaries we often see on sitcoms and in classic comedy routines...

12 oz. bottle, with the label notched at bottled on the first week of March 2013, so this beer is about a year old. Another new beer to me from Lakefront Brewery, the second of their 25th anniversary beers for me. Expectations are good; the premise sounds delicious.

Poured into a clear balloon snifter.

A - Pours a beautiful dark mahogany brown color, just a shade away from opaque in the glass. One finger of fluffy bubbly caramel chocolate colored head. Thin scattered lacing. Looks pretty nice.

S - Smell isn't quite on par with what I was expecting, but it's pleasant enough. The cocoa comes through very dry and bitter, with the mildly tart, slightly medicinal cherry puree coming in second. Boozy rum raisin, some woodiness, and some earthy yeast / band-aid presence. I'm not getting much in the way of vanilla or bourbon barrel, though.

T - Taste is a step back up from the aroma. The tart juicy cherry puree is nicely integrated with the cocoa nibs and vanilla, and all three come through nicely. The cocoa finishes very bitter, the cherries tart, and the vanilla creamy. Dark, roasty, & bitter.

M - Feel is smooth, creamy, & silky, with a dry, powdery, bitter, chocolatey finish. Not hot or boozy at all. Perfect carbonation.

Overall, a very nice imperial stout from Lakefront Brewery that has aged gracefully this past year. This has probably been my favorite of their beers, out of the ones I have tried so far. I would have it again, and I might be interested to see how it continues to age. Recommended.

Botted 4th week of January (2013 I presume)
A - opaque black body topped with a thin light brown head that dissipates quickly
S - sweet, rich nose with roasted barley, molasses, dark chocolate, burnt sugar, faint piny hops
T - rich and sweet again with burnt sugar, caramel, brown sugar, roasted barley, dark chocolate, sticky piny hops
M - fuller body, resiny, drying and a little harsh even though the alcohol is pretty well concealed. Hoppy, roasty bitterness lingers
O - nice, strong, bold American Imperial Stout

Appearance- Pours a thick black with a 1 finger tan head that lingers for a while and leaves moderate lacing.

Smell- Good notes of vanilla and coffee, bittersweet chocolate mixes in their as well and a bit of caramel in the background. Very good smell, strong but not overpowering.

Taste- Dark chocolate and dark fruits, maybe a bit of cherry tartness. Black coffee that blends well with the other flavors. Vanilla and cream also.

Mouthfeel- Good, creamy body. Carbonation is good for the style, leaves a nice, slick feeling after swallowing.

Overall- Very good imperial stout. Good smell and flavors as well as a nice mouthfeel.
