I bought a couple of these bombers and wanted to try one right away to see if I wanted to buy more before they disappear.

This pours a very dark reddish brown where you can see some light through it. It has a very thick off white head and lacing that sticks around for a while.

The smell is of sweet malts maybe a hint of maple & vanilla. It has medium mouth feel and is a little cloying. This beer is a malt bomb, sweet and alcoholic - maple sugary and vanilla perhaps.

This beer has a lot of residual sugars and was a very good after dinner treat. It is a descent Doppelbock.

Dark reddish copper color, bright clarity, tan foam has a creamy surface texture.
Spotty lace around the edges of the glass.

Aromas of maple and nutty malts, vague vanilla is present. At room temperature, there's a sharp note isopropyl alcohol that materializes for better or worse.

Creamy and smooth, maple is big, very malt forward, pecan and almond, maybe a little vanilla in the aftertaste. There is a vague hint of alcohol, though it's not overbearing. Overall this was really enjoyable to sip on for an hour or so, there's some traces of alcohol, but the taste is pretty nice.

22 oz bottle poured into a Lakefront imperial pint.
8.8% ABV, 25 IBUs, 21°P, 34°L, Bottled 06/06/13 printed in yellow on shoulder.

A - Fire-y crimson amber in color, Chris is clear as can be and quite vibrant to boot! A firm tall tan head rests atop for quite some time, slowly lowering to the beer's surface with very little in the way of lacing.

S - Like any good doppelbock should, Chris has a bold aroma of sweet malt, which brings gooey caramel, notes of toffee, and an underlying nuttiness to the table. My maple-loving self wants to project on this beer more maple than is truly there; light smokiness does emerge though and with a meaty, umami-like vanilla bean hint making for a great aroma that's finished with a faint whiff of solvent alcohol from the near 9%.

T - Malt forward again, and even though the aroma foreshadows it's bold presence, it's doesn't quite capture how malty this beer really is. Sweet, sweet caramel and toffee with warm, thick bread overwhelm the delicate notes of vanilla bean and maple again, though their nuances are effective in this sweet lager. Alcohol and notes of raisins trail off on the finish as this lager warms up.

M - Thick bodied - dare I say syrupy? The light carbonation does little to balance the heavy, albeit smooth body of Chris while it's sweetness approaches cloying levels making drinking more than a pint nearly impossible. A faint trail of warming alcohol, the same one found in the nose, returns on the swallow for a subtle nudge this beer has a kick. My Turn brewers don't have to brew a style based on the time of year they're releasing a beer, but this would be much better in late fall or winter where the thicker body and soothing sweetness would be quite enjoyable.

O - I'll be up front with my unfulfilled desires of this beer. "Maple Vanilla Doppelbock Lager". Chris is a very malty, smooth, and soothing doppelbock but it lacks the first two words in it's description, "maple" and "vanilla". Notes of smoke are pulled from the maple syrup and plenty of unfermented sugar remains in the brew which could also be an attribute of the maple syrup, but it's void of actual maple flavor. Vanilla is the same, really adding little beyond subtle nuances of the bean. Both "gripes" are more of a personal let down than anything though, because either way Chris is a great doppelbock loaded with (partially) unadulterated malty goodness ready to satisfy the sweet beer lover in anyone. And with it's capacity for aging, I'll be sure to keep a bottle around for the colder months ahead.

1 PT. 6 FL. OZ. bottle
Served in a pilsner glass

A - It's not quite copper in color. It is a dark burnt orange. I got about an inch of beige head.

S - The maple is apparent. There is a lot of sweet toffee and caramel malt. I really don't notice any vanilla.

T - It is sweet but not overtly so. The maple and caramel malt blend well. I get some subtle vanilla on the finish.

M - Medium and a little syrupy.

O - It is not my favorite doppelbock, but it is an interesting beer. I like it. The sweetness is balanced out by just enough hops. I would have it again.

A: The beer is clear amber in color and has ever so slight hints of visible carbonation. It poured with a finger high beige head that quickly died down, leaving lacing on the surface and a collar around the edge of the glass.
S: Light aromas of sweet malts are present in the nose along with faint hints of maple and vanilla.
T: Like the smell, the taste is quite malty and has some sweetness along with notes of maple syrup and hints of vanilla.
M: It feels a bit more than medium-bodied on the palate with a moderate amount of carbonation.
O: This beer seems to be easier to drink compared to other doppelbocks because it doesn't feel as heavy on the palate and no traces of alcohol are noticeable in the taste. It would have been nicer if this beer had a stronger smell and taste of maple syrup and vanilla.

22oz. Wanted something sweet tonight, and this seemed to fit the bill.

A: Pours a cloudy maple color with a small off-white head.

S: Nose brings maple, sticky molasses, a bit of bready yeast, maybe a hint of vanilla, mild raisin.

T: Taste brings caramel, a bit of plum, prominent maple, whole wheat bread, a bit of brown sugar. I expected this to be somewhat cloying but surprisingly it's not.

M: Medium-bodied with a bit more than moderate carbonation.

O: The vanilla isn't really showing up, but perhaps that's a good thing (it might be too sweet otherwise). This is a pleasant beer with no hint of the almost 9% ABV.
