Notes/Commercial Description:
This formidable India Pale Ale has a hop aroma that demands attention. The bold, citrus hop flavor is balanced by a dry malt character making this refreshing ale a true classic.

Pours a clear, orangy/amber color. Nice looking beer. However, the smell and taste can't match up. Smells and tastes of mild hoppiness, malt and a fair bit of yeast. Mouthfeel is fine. A perfectly drinkable IPA, but not terribly impressive either. One step up from your regular ol' mainstream IPA's that you find in every grocery store.

12oz. bottle poured into pint glass.

A: Pours a dark, aged copper color with significant amounts of hazing due to some floating sediment. Definitely a bit darker than I'd expect. A two-and-a-half finger head, reminiscent to the color of organic heavy cream, sits atop the brew. The head retention is decent, but with an IPA I definitely expected a bit more. The lacing is also rather weak for an IPA.

S: Floral hops with a strong fruity undertone and some citrusy grapefruit. Detecting a lot of malt through it all... Suspiciously malty for a brew named "Hop Hog."

T: Strong malt up front, with a sweetbread-like characteristic. The hops are very floral and reserved and generally take the backseat which is vastly disappointing in this style. A little bit of grassy, piney, albeit weak, bitterness in the finish.

M: Probably the best aspect of the brew here... Definitely full-bodied, to be expected considering the amount of malt. Creamy and smooth with a good amount of carbonation providing some bite. Superb drinkability.

O: Don't get me wrong, Hop Hog is a really good brew. In its own right, I enjoyed it quite a lot. However, with a name like Hop Hog and the fact that it bears the IPA classification, I simply can't score it higher. The maltiness is far too dominant and the hop presence is so weak and restrained. Like I said, Hop Hog is a very enjoyable beer, but Lancaster needs to rethink this recipe because it's definitely not a good example of what an IPA is.
