Smells of, go figure, lactose. That and roast coffee, touch of chicory. Nice, mellow...fits the style.
Formed a nice but rapid reducing tan head. Pitch black, can't see thru it at all. I know its opaque by looking at the bottom of the glass. No brussels lace to speak of. Thin rim of bubbles stayed around the rim of the glass.
Bit thin, watery. Not as creamy as I'd hoped.
Flavor comes on strong but dies quickly. Lactose then black patent are the first things I taste, but then falls flat. Touch of bitterness at the end which is probably from the roasted grains and not from the hops.
