Lancaster- Shoo-Fly Porter

A- Deep brown with a thin filmy head.
S- Swwet brown sugar, molasses, and a caramelized sugar.
T- Sweet syrupy pecans, cola, caramel, huge doses of brown sugar, and a slight dusting of cocoa powder.
M- Deep bold molasses, very sweet brown sugar, and a nutty malt finish.

Overall- Sweet, very close to Shoo-Fly pie. A nice dessert/ night cap beer.

Nitro-tap at Mahaffey's in Baltimore.

Appearance: Kind of looks like Guinness because of the nitro tap appearance. Really creamy head, dense, and though seemingly opaque, there's some light getting through, leaving some dark red.

Smell: A good combination of dark sweetness, chocolate, and roasted malt aromas. Lighter, but balanced.

Taste: Seemingly nothing up front, though the finish leaves big roasted malts, mild coffee, and sweeter chocolate notes. Light but very tasty and easy to drink.

Mouthfeel: Creamy initially from the nitro, though there's a bit of following grittiness, which I actually like and it a little weird.

Drinkability: A very solid porter from Lancaster, and I liked the nitro aspect with all the flavors it was bringing. I'd drink it again.

Had a pint on cask at Tap and Table. It appears a murky dark brown with a short tan head. The beer is smooth and drinkable, but a bit strong for the flavor impact. It sounds silly, but a 6% beer should be richer. This had a pleasant chocolate and coffee roast flavor, but not much else. I'd have expected it to be only about 4.5%. Anyways, it's a simple but tasty beer. Certainly worth drinking a pint.

P- Lancaster Brewing Co.

A- Wow a huge head pour. Very frothy and luscious. Amazing. sticky lacing and grabs on to glass. A slight nut brown color to the head as well. A dark jet black color thatis opaque. Some light glistens through but not much.

S- a bready smell with molasses in the midst of it. alcohol and malt as well.

T- a dark roasted chocolate cocoa bean is exactly what it tastes like. Sweet molasses lingers around as well. Coffee taste hits the back end.

M- a medium bodied beer that has some good qualities. The coffee flavor coats the mouth pretty well.

D- not too bad but the dark roast portion of it is a tad overpowering. I think the molassess should be the focus, given the name.

Nice porter that is lightly sweetened, flavored, and smoothed by molasses and vanilla.

On tap at The Devil's Den in South Philly...
Appears a dark brown with steady streams of CO2 quickly rising to the top of the thick, off-white head. Scattered streaks of lacing is left around the glass.
Smell is of roasty malts, molasses, bitter hops, and some cocoa.
Taste is of the same aromas with an unexpected bitterness that doesn't come across as being as sweet as I would've imagined. Certainly not as sweet as real shoo-fly pie that I remember having as a kid.
Mouthfeel is a bit harsh with the carbonation. Full bodied, and spritzy along the tongue. I'd like to try this either on nitro, or on cask to escape the zippiness of the bubbles.

On tap at the Lancaster Brewing Company at Plum and Chestnut. (Thanks to my fiance' who lives several blocks away)

Poured a dark brown with a small sized off white head.

Great aroma of a light Chocolate roast, coffee and caramel.

Tastes of coarse chocolate, slight sweet molasses, honey, and toffee. Some lacing left on the glass as I drank it. Not an over powering alcohol taste, so it can sneak up on you.

I felt the Shoo-fly pie taste in the molasses note of this beer. This beer seems hard to find at times, so if you get a chance drink one and you will see why.

Well worth it.

Served in an standard Shaker glass. Glass of cold water on the side to sip from periodically.

Appearance: A dark brown with reddish undertones, ¼" off-white or tan head which fades quickly leaving ring of foam behind and some light, speckled lacing.

Smell: The smell is light but definitely is of molasses and caramelized brown sugar.

Taste: As expected from the aroma, the sweet, dark molasses taste pops out first and is followed by the sweet bitterness of caramelized sugar.

Mouthfeel: The mouthfeel is thin with light carbonation. The finish is medium long and dry with faint hops and occasional notes of molasses sweetness.

Drinkability: Reasonably drinkable so that I could easily have a couple more. While the flavor is not as intense and rich as eating a piece of Shoo Fly Pie, the taste and aroma capture some of the experience. I'll probably try this one again.
