I was on the search for some exports that were not necessarily what you would think of when you go to your export section at your everyday beer store. I was greeted when I walked in, which gets a check in my book or a really bad vibe if not greeted, and made my way to the back where the craft beer was. Upon first glance, I noticed some good stuff (Burton Baton caught my eye, Sculpin) but noticed a lot of it was waaaay past date. Found the bomber section and was delighted to find one that I was looking for, Weihenstephaner's Kristal Weisse. Also grabbed a bottle of Stone's Sprocketbier as well since I had yet to taste. In summation, Thorpe's had a decent supply but still not one of the better ones.

While the selection of craft beer may be better than average at Thorpe`s, it is not great. And while friendly enough, none of the staff members that I briefly spoke with knew an extensive amount about craft beer (which is not a big deal, just noting it). When asked about a limited one-off beer they pointed to a year round beer as an alternative being a good example. The layout towards the back of some of the cases and 6-packs seemed a bit haphazard, it could have been organized better. All in all, a good place to grab some craft beer in this part of RI, but did not find it to be as good as some previous reviewers did.

Walked into Thorpes and once I figured the layout of the place I had an easy time finding what I was after. They have a good selection of room temp craft and imported beers, I feel you have to be a little cautious of how fresh the product was though, the selection hasn't changed in some time now. Compared to some other stores in the area they have some rarities but no the overall selection.

The staff was mostly young and attractive females... not a bad thing, unless you're looking for some advice !

A very nice place to visit with excellent hours and in a great location, but a bit tough to cross traffic lanes.

Quite a large, diverse selection of beers and ales from around the world (very decent cold beer selectoin, too). The Belgian selection was quite good as was some brews from New England I'd not seen before. The emphasis is clearly on wine, however. They also have a decent liquor selection.

The young, attractive gals working the registers did a fine job. One mentioned she had only recently turned 21, so garnering advice wasn't an option.

I'll be back.

One of the best selection of bombers and US micro's in central RI. They have also added some international brews as well, but with that of course the price goes up. Really good Belgian selection but as stated they are fairly pricey.

Small, but this is definately more of a beer/wine store (if you want liquor you will pay signifcantly more than other RI liquor stores.) Check your dates though, found a few beers that were literally years past their expiry, and these weren't the kind you would want to age. Solid six pack selection in the back, displays and in coolers.

I've been planning on hitting Thorpe's for a while and finally got around to doing so. Right off Main Street in East Greenwich with ample parking, Thorpes has a solid collection of regionals (ST, Smutty, Wachusett, SA, Harpoon, Brooklyn, Woodstock, etc.), as well as a 30 foot or so, 3-4 tier shelf dedicated to bombers of American craft brews, some Germans, English and Belgians. Way too many varieties to list, but highlights inlcuded ST Backburner, Creme Brule, Pumking, Hoppe, Unearthly. A solid line-up from DFH - Pangaea, Fort, Blue & White, 120 minute IPA. Seven or eight offerings from Rogue. Several Smutty big beers - RIS, Maibock, Smuttonator, Baltic Porter, Big A, etc. A lineup from Rochefort, Chouffe (I picked up a Mc Chouffe & a La Chouffe), a few from Affligem, Orval, Delirium Tremens and Nocturnum, Chimay, as well as several of th Global Beer Network brews. Also noticed several holiday seasonals from past years. Prices were very reasonable; however, some of the stock was a little dusty (could be good or bad depending on what you are looking for). Staff was very courteous and friendly and I found prices to be quite reasonable. Well worth your time and you might find a hidden treasure.

I stopped in recently for some Smuttynose Baltic Porter and left with several other bottles as well. I haven't been in the store in several years. They have pumped up the Belgian selection since and I took advantage of that seeing several bottles that I have never seen.

The staff was very helpful. I called ahead of time to see if they had any Baltic Porter left and a nice girl put it away for me to pick up later.

They also carry a bunch of craft brew that they keep in the back area a lot of local/regional stuff.

EDIT - 1-8-2010
I stopped in yesterday just to check things out and see what they had and the shelves were less than full. I'm not sure if they got hit hard over the holidays and haven't restocked yet or if something else was going on. I will be interested to see what's up the next time I visit.

Stopped by here yesterday afternoon to pick up some brews for my brother's annual BBQ during the Air Show. It's located right on Main Street in the center of town. I was actually blown away by the large selection they had here. When you walk in, off to the right, there is a half-store length shelf of Belgian beers, along with many craft beer 4 packs. In the back of the store, there are warm 12 packs stacked, and then coolers for 6 packs, 12 packs, and cases in the walk-in. We picked up a Newport Storm Summer Ale 12 pack for the bbq, then as a bonus for myself I picked up a few treats for later. I grabbed a sixer of Thirsty Dog Siberian Night RIS ($9.99). Next, they had bombers for $4.29, so I managed to snag a 2008 Smutty Baltic Porter, a 2007 Smutty Barleywine, and the new Harpoon 100 Barrel Series. Not a bad haul for $32. I would be more than happy if this place was my local beer store.

This is a medium to almost large store well lit but somewhat confusing as to where to find the beer. There is some large bottles in a cooler by the cashier. There are open cases in the middle of the floor at the back of the store. Here you will find some more collers with six packs in them. Then as you turn back to the front of the store on the far left you will find half an aisle of beer ( micros and imports ). They have a good selection of micros; Yards, Dogfish head, Magic Hat, Geary's, Grittys, Hooker, Old Burside, Weyerbacher, Long Trail and Newport Storm. Kinda weak on the belgians tho; Duvel, Fantome and some dusty Duinen. Russ is the beer manager here and quite knowledgable and helpful. If you have questions ask for him...Russ.

this is a fairly nice liquor store in east greenwich. it doesn't have a huge-huge selection, but i managed to find some decent stuff. i found boon mariage parfait (a traditional and very hard to find kriek) there for a very fair $10., plus they had a fair amount of belgians, english and new england microbrews like allagash and smuttynose. prices seemed pretty fair to me. staff was very friendly, too.
it's definitely worth the occasional stop, but not a "drive all day" liquor store.

A nice little package store. A good selection of New England micros, some bigger regional micros, along with an very interesting selction of imported items. They usually carry special releases for Smuttynose, Harpoon, & Magic Hat, as well. Prices are very reasonable, too. Staff isn't particularly beer savy, but they are friendly & helpful. Also an excellent selection of wines, if that sort of thing interests you.
