Simply the best country pub I have ever had the pleasure to visit. Finding this place is the only drawback you'll encounter about the Blue Ship.
Just returned from my latest trip to the U.K. and had to make a second trip to make sure last years visit to the B.S. wasn't just a dream. Still had to stop and ask a local where to turn again, but at least we were in the right area quickly this time!
It was even better this time because the anticipation of seeing this beautiful old pub at the end of a country lane made my heart race. You'll never find anything better than a first rate English country pub with so much character that you coudn't make it up in a fairy tale.
The first thing that strikes you when entering the B.S. is that it has no bar! The wonderful Badger real ales are served straight from the barrel via gravity and not handpumped from a cellar. The local regulars that I chatted with highly recommended the food both for lunch and evening meals. Haven't tried any yet but I'll take the word of these people over any outside reviews.
The parking lot was full on the thurs. evening we visited and all the rooms and the outside drinking area were nearly packed. Amazing when you consider how hard this place is to find and how really out of the way it is. The Blue Ship's reputation as a great pub of outstanding quality must be hard to keep a secret.
It took us about 40 minutes to drive from the Gatwick airport area through pleasant W. Sussex countryside to get to the B.S. Unless you can find a local B and B in the area I would highly recommend a non drinking driver as the place has a way of making you stay for that one last final final. Beware!!!!
