500ml bottle served in a Weizen glass.

A: Pours a clear golden yellow color forming a medium bubbled and very bubbled white head. Creamy. Excellent retention and lots of thin and lingering lacings left in the glass

S: Great notes of honey and sweet grains. Delicious. Very bready with strong notes of flowery hops. Notes of vanilla and earthy, bready Lager yeasts

T: Slightly sweet pale grains in upfront. Crispy. Strong notes of honey. Very bready. Delicious flowery hops. In overall, a dry but smooth and pleasant taste

M: Medium, creamy and extremely smooth texture. Good carbonation and a very bready aftertaste

O: Great drinkability. Quite "different" Czech Pilsener in the good sense. Very smooth and pleasant Lager

500ml bottle from Prague Airport (£1.63):
Bright amber with with a 2-fingers tall head that holds well initially & looks creamy with some nice lacing on the sides & a clear body.

Fresh with some nice grassy hops & hints of citrus plus medium strength lager malts, biscuit & sweetness. Hops with some spice making an appearance as well. Quite a lively one on the nose with a good balance & a pleasantly sweet aroma throughout.

Sweet malts, biscuit & bread come through with the grassy hops from the nose. Citrus as well & spice from the Saaz hops & more malty than I was expecting.

Smooth with a medium body & a sweet mouthfeel that almost seemed creamy. The citrus left a tickling tang on the tongue & the beer was well-carbonated, crisp & moderately bitter towards the end.

Another cracking Czech beer. This was was thicker than I was expecting, with a great feel to it that bordered on creamy. The beer was very easy to drink and is again another that is up there with the best that the style has to offer.

Damn, I think I had eaten something that colored my experience in tasting beer. This is my second beer in a row that tasted metallic. I tried to fix that by finding something else to counter that and the only thing I could find was pine flavored lozenges I got in Pilsen! Ha! Metallic flav is gone, pine is here. Anyway, poured with a small to medium sized off white head that slowly fades and some lace. Color is a clear gold. Aroma is malt, hop, caramel, grain, and fresh baked bread. Flavor is.... ok all things considered. Great body and carbonation. Finish is like flavor.

50cl bottle that is unfortunately out of code. BBE 8/21/08. Pours clear amber with a fluffy white head that leaves nice lacing. Smells of bready malt and nice light, grassy hops--sure they would have been stronger with a fresher bottle. Tastes of pils malt, and seems to be slightly lighter than the smell would have suggested. Drying hops. Faint mineral notes toward the end. A nice, pleasant-drinking pils for sure, even at this age.

in lager I tend to "go Czech", meaning the best lagers are generally Czech brews (with few exceptions) ... this is partly due to Saaz hops (which seem to be best for lager) and the craft of Czech brewers (Czech Rep. has the highest consumption of beer per capita and brewing is a serious matter there)

This brew definitely confirms the above rule ... it has the Czech lager trademark bitterness paired with a honeyed fruitiness usually not around in a classic lager ...

Chodovar is a small Czech Brewery that follows Purity laws to the tee, and makes some fantastic beers.

This 13% was obtained at the excellent Pivni Gallerie in Prague.

Pours from a standard European .5 litre bottle. Head didn't come on as strong as other czech brews, but a small bit lasted till the very end. Color is a brilliant golden. Carbonation bubbles can be seen climbing the glass the entire beer.

Smells very sweet, like caramel.

Flavor is pretty unique, and very tasty. The initial feel in the mouth reminds me of a smoked porter with slight hints of caramel. Theres a fair kick of hops in there though balancing it out. Interestingly its the common czech uber spicy hops. The flavor is both sweet and spicy because of this, with some bitter grapefruit threads on the back of the toungue. Finally a touch of minerals from the water are present, and linger through the aftertaste. With the beer they taste great, but I don't appreciate the aftertaste quite as much. If you want it hoppier drink it cold, the malt really comes out as it warms up.

Mouthfeel is very carbonated, but not too biting. Stays interesting all over the toungue, tickling here, evaporating there. The minerals add a touch of sharpness though.

This is a fantastic beer, one of my absolute favorites from the Czech Republic. My only real complaint is the mineraly aftertaste.
