This can lists 4.5% ABV. I am surprised to see it classified as a "Czech pilsner", as in my opinion it is pretty much the epitomy of an "adjunct lager".

The only ingredient listed on the can is "100% aluminum" - which explains the metallic taste? However as there is only a hint of grain and a defined corn sweetness, I am reviewing this as an adjunct lager. Either that or it would be the worst pilsner ever...

Pale straw colour and sustained rapid effervescence. No aroma to speak of, and very light flavour profile. No maltiness and the only hops are in a slight bitterness to the finish.

Perhaps I've been in Mexico too long and now see corn everywhere, but I am convinced this is an adjunct. Fine if one is looking for volume & "cold", but certainly not ideal if looking for taste.

From a 12oz bottle - My bottle says 4.5% and it clearly tastes like one and not a 6% as stated here.

A: Clear see thru light yellow w/ medium carbonation
S: not impressed; it has LIGHT BEER written al over it.
T: bitter, corn, foamy.
M: watery.
D: You can have this to win a beer-bong competition, it really goes down easily.

I was pretty disappointed with this beer, probably because I had some expectations to it. Believe it or not most of my mexicans friends do not now the existence of this beer.

This one will go down as a memory of life since i'll never ask for this one again.

Poured from a 1.2 liter bottle into a regular glass cup.

A: Light golden yellow color with a bubbly head that dissipates extremely quickly.
S: Strong corn aroma with alcohol and maltiness.
T: Slightly metallic with a peculiar bitter ending.
M: Light bodied with high carbonation.
D: While easy to drink, it is not too enjoyable. I can see this being refreshing on a hot summer day. Nothing special about this beer.

Appearance - This is a light yellow in color with a slight shade of orange. The bright white head came up easy and actually showed some retention.

Smell - The grain is light and easy here if a bit on the stale side.

Taste - The grain turns corny at the taste with an offputting sweetness.

Mouthfeel - This light-bodied lager was smooth with a light carbonation that gave it a refreshing character.

Drinkability - Parts of this beer begged to be dumped but the positive aspects of it just did keep it out of the sink.

Note: I think this is only the second time in almost 2,000 reviews that I have five different ratings that none are the same. Bizarre . . .

Montejo looks far classier than it actually is; its crystalline clarity, microscopic bubbles and faint whitish hue give it the air of champagne, especially when held up into the light. Its fragmentary head and the diminutive lacing it is just barely able to contrive are probably a little more indicative of the beer's level of quality and craftsmanship.

The bouquet smells alright - provided you don't mind corn syrup. I appreciate that Mexico's culture, cuisine and history are entwined with corn, and while I can overlook a little corn being used in the mash, I have to insist that it makes a much worse smelling grain than wheat, barley or rye. This particular scent is compounded by a chemical-like aura.

Corn is also obvious in the taste but it's curiously not nearly so disagreeable. In fact, it's actually quite palatable. I'm not sure what makes this so but if the Mexicans would be so kind as to share this secret with the rest of Latin America, the big producers in North America and Europe and the rice brewers in Japan, that would be much appreciated.

As inoffensive and palatable as it is, I'm glad to find there's no aftertaste. The bubbles are energetic enough to wash a lot of the sweetness away and, with only a minimal bitterness, the palate is left with little to remember the beer by. And having had the good mind to pair it with corn tortillas and corn salsa, I can say it works well with salty snack foods.

If the world's beer drinkers wanted a better light-bodied, quenching and characterless beer for their patio and poolside drinking, I'd suggest Montejo rather than Grupo Modelo's more famous brand, Corona. For my palate, I find it much more agreeable and much closer to passing for a decent, commonplace beer rather than offensive, chemical-laden water.

Tasted from a 40 oz bottle. Look: Pale yellow color, poor head of foam; Smell: Soft, dry malts and grain; Taste: Again dry malts and chayote with floral hops; Mouthfeel: Clean and crisp, slightly bitter with a subtly salty finish; Drinkability: I always hated this beer but the last time i drank it was good.

Poured from a 12 oz bottle into a pint glass.

A: Pours a pale yellow color.

S: Grainy husks with s bit of sweetness.

T: Some corn, a bit of pale malt, hops are not really present at all. It's watery although crisp and refreshing.

M: Light bodied, high in carbonation.

D: Probably the best of the beers that I had on my trip to Playa Del Carmen, but that's not saying much. It's not a pilsner though, just a light adjunct lager.

Appearance: Small white head is here 1 minute and gone the next. Clear bright yellow body with pretty good carbonation.

Had this in a small bar in Cozumel. Your typical thin bodied, somewhat grainy Mexican beer without much distinguishing nose or flaveor, and a slightly stale finish. But it was a hot day, the beer was cold, and I was on vacation, so nothing is too bad at that point. Besides, I have never seen this beer in the states, so I got to try something different.

I prefer bock when it comes to Mexican beers (especially Indio) but Montejo is my favorite lager / pilsner they have south of the border. It's 6% alc. makes it harder as a session beer down here but it's so much better than Corona or even Dos Equis, hopefully they will start exporting it. Try it if you have a chance and enjoy!

Stumbled across this a couple times while in Mexico during a cruise.

Drank straight from the bottle on the streets in Cozumel, so the formalities of appereance, color, smell, etc were somewhat lost in the surroundings.

But bottom line, I had to search out & reached for this quite a few more times than the solidly available Coronas.

12 oz into dog-faced mug.

A: Looks very pale-golden. Not much lacing head virtually disappears.

S: Smells kinda like a Corona, not much there. although this beer is much better than a Corona.

T: Very light maybe a bit of well pasteurized hop character. Faint grains. Bit metallic.

M: light bodied but not terrible for this type of beer.

D: Very refreshing for those of you that have a palette for lime and salt add it to this beer its good for what ails you on a hot summer's day.

As others have noted, I don't see any comparison between this and a pilsener. There just isn't that much there. It was a clear yellow with no head. Not much aroma, maybe a little graininess. A vague, sweet taste. Couldn't find any hops. Refreshing on a hot day, but that's about it.

Pilsner my ass. For a pils, this is a big underperformer. Like Estrella, it hints at good pilsner qualities, but doesn't go all the way. It is most unoffensive and can wash down food on a hot day. I got mine as a 5 peso upgrade from water with a lunch in Cancun, and I guess it wasn't horrible for 5 pesos. Still, no hops or decent malt profile.

Oooo, a decent Mexican beer. A bit pale for a pilsener, as it still looks like Corona, but the smell is an acceptable mixture of malt and hop zest. No skunkiness.

Decent taste, a little bit overdone on the malts. Sweet, somewhat syrupy flavour.

A bit too fizzy, overly carbonate. Closer to an American macro in mouthfeel. Drinkable, and very enjoyable. Especially for a Mexican lager.

This beer is often offered at places were food from Yucatan is served.

It is a refreshing beer, yellow color, with a little bit of bitterness.

It has a very light body and smells very tiny.

Excellent for hot days, and with some Cochinita and Pan de Cazón.

This beer comes out of its slender silk screened bottle a bright gold color with a patchy head and intermittent lace. The aroma is sweet with a delicate floral hoppiness. The taste is Malty with a bready, yeasty quality. Hop spice is light but balancing. The mouthfeel is medium and almost soapy. The finish is lacking in bitterness.

This is a decent example of a malty pilsner. My bottle said 4.5% so maybe theres a new/different recipe. Way better than Corona and worth a try.

Now this is a strange style coming from the tropics of México: Czech pilsener.

It's color is quite average: Straw yellow, with little, if any, head; almost no lacing.

Smell is almost unnoticeable, but you can, maybe, pick up some maltiness.

Taste is crisp and refreshing. Period.

Mouthfeel is dry, with some bitterness from the hops.

In a hot humid day, you can have several of these.

¡Salud!

This can be very confusing. If you try it like a Czech Pilsener it would be a common beer, but if you try it like a Lager it would get a better score. Unfotunately, beers here are almost all lagers, and if they are not, they are like adapted to lager fans. IT has a strong taste that tells you it is not a lager.

Features a white head over clear straw yellow/golden liquid. Light, clean and lemony/grassy malt nose. Taste is a pleasant sharp, slightly metallic hop not and light maltiness, crisp and quite drinkable. Finishes clean, with a late hop ending, not too bad to enjoy actually.

Consumed in October 2004 in Cancun, Mexico from a bottle. Pours with a nice head which quickly disappears. Maybe a bit of lave. Not much scent to the beer. Corn, maybe a bit of malt. Don't really smell any hops though. You can taste the malt and there are a few actual hops you can taste. Decent carbonation, but still a bit watery like all the rest of the beers in Mexico. Not horrible, but still barely decent. Fortunately I only have about three more I think to review and two of them are at least decent.

This beer tasted better than it probably was. Why, because it was a beautiful tropical day and I was dying for some kind of beer. Standard straw color, minimal head retention, sparse lacing. Light crisp taste that reeks of corn adjunct. A decent choice for those wishing to avoid Corona.
