I really had high hopes for the Modelo Especial, in large part because I enjoy this beer's darker brother, Negra Modelo. In truth, though, Modelo Especial is strictly an average Mexi-lager, not quite up to the standard of a Dos Equis or a Tecate, both of which I like better. Still, it's not bad on a hot day, and it does pair well with Tex-Mex.
The appearance is low-average at best. Not much head, not much depth of color beyond a pale straw-yellow.
The nose is slightly sweet, but mostly non-existent. Slight hint of something sour going on.
The taste is light and fairly weak. Not much of a hop bite and the malts are muted and sweetened with corn adjunct. The flavor just never takes off, instead being content to provide the minimal interest for the buck. I'm not too impressed.
Average mouthfeel. Adequate carbonation level.
Reasonably drinkable, but I'm not going out of my way to catch this one again. There are plenty of other Mexi-lagers on the market that are better.
