355 mL bottle from a sixer picked up at the LCBO; bottled Apr 9 2015 and served well-chilled. I usually attempt to pick interesting beers when a milestone review comes up - but for #1000, I instead opted to go in an alternate direction.

Pours a clear golden-yellow colour, generating one finger of loose, soapy, white-coloured head that proceeds to fizzle away over the course of the next few minutes. It leaves behind a thin, bubbly collar of foam, but not much else. The aroma is about what I expected... skunky, with some pale malt graininess, corn chip sweetness and a touch of grassiness. Not the worst-smelling Mexican lager I've ever sniffed, but it's down there.

My feelings concerning the flavour are similar - it's bland and mildly off-putting, but you're still a few scrapes away from the bottom of the barrel. Grainy pale malts, corn husks and syrupy sweetness contribute the bulk of the flavour. A skunky, weedy grassiness comes through toward the finish, but the aftertaste is nothing but adjunct sweetness. Light-bodied and watery, with assertive carbonation levels that give this lager a crisp, refreshing mouthfeel. Mostly inoffensive, so I could see why you might want to drink this outside in hot weather.

Final Grade: 2.82, a C. Modelo Especial is a passable adjunct lager - and that's probably the biggest compliment that I feel is appropriate to bestow upon it. I like it more than Corona, but that's setting the bar pretty low. Reminds me of beers like Sol or Tecate - in that they are all relatively cheap beers that I would not recommend (because they are swill), but they are also not so off-putting that I'd outright refuse to drink them again. I really doubt I'd spend money on this again, unless I were in Mexico and faced with few other redeeming options. (1,792 characters)

Not bad. Quite refreshing. Beats Corona for me. Not as good as Longfin which I had this summer but better than Narragansett and PBR. Very gold and bubbly. Cute bottle. July 2015 12 oz bottle as part of a beers of the world gift box from Walt for my birthday. (258 characters)

12 oz bottle. Thin white head receded quickly. Golden color with visible fizzy carbonation. Smells like a Czech Pilsner. Aroma of grass, lemon zest, and black pepper. Smooth, easy drinking, and zesty. This beer is better than expected. More complex and flavorful than the average macro lager. (292 characters)

This is a middle of the road beer. Very drinkable in social occasions. This is my go to beer at the lake, ice cold on a warm day. I prefer this over the other big Mexican beers. Very clean, aftertaste is pretty much non-existent, not heavy at all. (247 characters)

Modelo Especial. Here in Canada it is 4,5% ABV

So the look of it: Very light, Yellow clear golden color. With lots of carbonation

The smell of it: Corny, grassy sweetness. Much more Aroma than the Corona. But from a clear bottle what can you expect...

The taste of it: Very light, feels the same than the Corona but have more Aroma, the finish is very clean. Corny, sweet, goes down very easy.

So overall would I recommend it? Sure, between a Corona and a Modelo I wold take the Modelo. It have more Aroma and the for me I find the bottle very Original. Yeah for this summer on the beach I will go for the Modelo (620 characters)

Slightly amber gold. Very clear with steady stream of bubbles rising from the bottom of pilsner glass. Low retention off white head. Bready, grainy nose with small lemon notes that quickly give way to sweeter esters. Very grainy up front. Adjunct sweetness and a bit skunky in the back. Bread and the lightest hop bitterness in the aftertaste. Quite sudsy, a little prickly, with decently crisp finish. Fuller end of light-bodied. Not bad for an adjunct lager, but nowhere even close in terms of quality or appeal to Negra Modelo. (530 characters)

Aroma: slight grainy, light sweetness, no hop, slight apple, not a lot of aroma. Appearance: Brilliant straw, white fluffy quickly dissipating head leaving traces of delicate lace, Flavor: grain, slight apple, light, a little light fruit, no hop, very low malt, a little apple in the after taste. Mouthfeel: Highly carbonated – more so than the Grain Belt and it makes a difference giving a carbonation bight that adds to the refreshing qualities, light body. Overall Impression: Very light – its most distinguishing feature is its lack of distinction. (556 characters)

About the only thing that I can do is to compare this to Corona, so here goes:

It smells better (which is NOT hard) and it has a better body than Corona. On the down side, it is more corny than Corona (yep, that's a negative). (228 characters)

Lagers get low scores for there lack of complexity. But this has body and flavor and maintains the lagers drinkability. It's refreshing and satisfying. (151 characters)

Poured from a can. Golden yellow and transparent with a decent white head. Plain aroma, nose didn't pick up much. Taste is a mix of bitterness and sugar. A little sweeter than expected. Average mouthfeel. Aftertaste left little more to be desired. (247 characters)

This Beer Surprised Me

First of all, I was surprised when the waiter brought it to me. I had ordered a Negra Modelo. He brought me Modelo Especial. I don't like to make a big fuss especially with the man who is going to be delivering my food so I went with the flow.

Second, I was surprised that I liked this beer. It's a beautiful clear golden color with a little bit of a head on top. It has a nice summertime taste and a smooth feel. This is the type of beer that you want when you're sitting at a Mexican beach resort or on your deck in the summertime. It's not heavy; it was a good taste; and it doesn't have a high level of alcohol so you can have a few without getting buzzed (although some people consider this a bad thing, but when the surf's up, you want to be ready to go).

Overall, it's a decent but not spectacular warm weather thirst quencher. (867 characters)

12oz bottle in a clear plastic glass.

Appearance: Burnished brass bright golden color. Thin white foam upon pouring dies back to nothing, no lacing.

Smell: Skunky - not much else .

Taste: Mildly bitter, a bit of a corn & rice adjunct taste, crisp, but something slightly off about the beer.

Mouthfeel: Surprisingly not massively fizzy, but highly carbonated. Not as watery as I would have expected given the lower ABV.

Overall / Drinkability: Went okay with a pizza slice, but nothing special and compared to Negra Modelo, not that great. No interest in having another one, nor any interest in having again. Okay for washing down a pizza slice for a late night working dinner, but given how much better I've had in beer, I do have some regret buying this one, but there wasn't much else available. Oh well. (831 characters)

Weak head soon reduces to a ring.
Excellent clarity.
Light feel, aroma and taste.
O: well, it’s at least as good as Corona and better than some light beers. (172 characters)

355ml bottle, the same type that we've seen the Negra Modelo in around here forever.

This beer pours a clear, medium golden yellow colour, with one fat finger of puffy, weakly foamy, and somewhat bubbly dirty white head, which leaves a few specks of remote islet lace around the glass as it quickly bleeds away.

It smells of skunky cat piss straight off (thankyouverymuch, clear packaging), grainy, gritty corn bread, a hint of real pale malt, some minor gasoline astringency, and wet musty cardboard. The taste is grainy, bready corn and pale malt, a still heady and grassy skunkiness, flinty hard water notes, a weird sour fruit rind character, and very tame earthy, weedy hops.

The carbonation is fairly sprightly, with a tingling frothiness, the body a surprising medium weight, and sort of smooth, inversely proportional to the degree of skunk yet to blow off. It finishes off-dry, the corn sweetness kept at moderate levels, while the nasty grassiness can't sink away fast enough.

Blah - not overtly offensive (I can see certain climate and cuisine situations where this would, um, 'work'), but not really enjoyable in the least when held up on its own. Cheap, plain, and boring, beyond the cutesy squat bottle, but we all knew that coming in. (1,256 characters)

This is my favorite beer to drink while floating the river in 95+ degree heat. Tastes great with lime/beer salt and isn't much more expensive than the traditional American macro lagers in Texas. Great session beer if you're sweating. (233 characters)

Yellow-gold. White head that quickly dissipates. Shows some good carbonation. Corn and malt aroma with a bit of funk. It has some sourness, corn is present in the taste. Mouthfeel is light-medium. Semi-dry finish. Overall, there is nothing offensive about this beer, but it's not one I would seek out to purchase again. When Cinco de Mayo rolls around and the local place is running a special, then I might give this one another go.

I got this at my local Tex Mex joint as a change of pace, I guess. What I got, of course, was a fairly mediocre, slightly below average adjunct lager. It's not a horrible beer, but it's not good either. It ranks with Corona. (227 characters)

I have to put this out there. This is in regard to style; this is an adjunct rating. An overall rating, this would not compare. That being said lets move forword.

Im drinking straight from can. I cannot see the color but I imagine its going to be a lighter color like bud compared to mgd. In taste i want to say it taste closer to coors but coors taste like a dry smoked hangover. This tastes like the piss of Ninkasi. Ninkasi brews sexy IPAs and Porters and then pisses Modelo, cans it in a sexy classic can, and fizzy barley pop drink it to feel "adventurous". Not the worst I've had, actually pretty happy drinking it. Would take over any miller standard brands.

I do enjoy that it has a nice coat on the tongue that lingers a little. To me it is suprising because it is very champagne like. Very bubbly very watery. After taste does hint sweet, almost no hop. Nice sweet and bread, but not sweet bread.

This is a true barley pop, true to adjunct lager. (959 characters)

DATE TASTED: January 25, 2015... GLASSWARE: 22 oz. pilsner... OCCASION: celebrating a rather easy Cavs win over the Thunder... APPEARANCE: clear copper body; pours a rashly fizzing head that comes to nothing quickly; a solitary bubble ascends; no lacing... AROMA: sweet, syrupy malts are front and center; biscuit and bread suggest a standard premium pilsener... PALATE: soft, apologetic and thin--drinkable but fizzy...TASTE: candied caramel malts and oats combine with some flowery hints to create a below-average, pitchy flavor...OVERALL: the can suggests it is the Mexican Miller, and not much in the can suggests the contrary; a good beer to finish the night with, when other quality beers have already been quaffed; as a sessional, meh...as a study, a fast, unrewarding one... (782 characters)

A: Clear, and yellow amber with white head.

S: Very light, with slight bread and grass notes.. a touch sweet. Pretty subdued, which is somewhat appropriate for the style.

T: Lightly bready, and crisp. The finish has a touch of bitterness, but there is no discernible hop flavor.

F: Light, incredibly bubbly, with a clean, albeit watery finish.

O: Overall it is a pretty simple brew.. easy drinking, crisp, and fairly unoffensive. Decent for beer you don't want to think about. Add some fresh lime juice and sea salt, and boom! (539 characters)

Can poured into a standard pint glass somewhere in Mexico (actually in Cabo San Lucas but whatever). A dark than expected orange-yellow with a light dappling of white bubbles rimming the glass. Aroma is slightly astringent and grainy, with an overarching corn sweetness. I was actually pleasantly surprised with the taste, perhaps because the expectancy bar was set appropriately low. There is a subtle buttery raisin note in there, along with a watermelon rind-like element (noble hops? ... Whoa...). Almost like a drastically watered-down Oktoberfest and distinct from other Mexican mainstream adjunct lagers in this regard. The expected corn sweetness is of course still present. Obviously its thin and watery, but there are at least some other low key flavors to note here. Perhaps I am guilty of overstating the case. At least this is almost as available as Corona and Pacifico in these parts. (898 characters)

Gold in color with a fingernail of white head around the rim and a bit in the middle. Some light lacing in the glass. I smell corn and perhaps some German bittering hops. The taste is corn and well water like lager yeast. The bittering hops also do show in the fade. The body is thin and nearly flat. (305 characters)

Pours a nice golden color but that's about all it has going for it. Smell and flavor are typical for an AAL with adjuncts dominating. The carbonation is weak and it flattens quickly. Only got it at a Tex-Mex restaurant because it was a "Happy Hour" Special. There are far better choices in Mexican beers. (307 characters)

This really isn't bad. I've liked negra modelo since I started drinking beer, but never had modelo especial until recently. Very big on the malt flavor and very "mexican" in taste, in that it tastes like many other mexican brews. A friend handed me one of these, and while I probably wouldn't pay for a six pack myself, I'd definitely have this one again. (355 characters)
