Served from a tallboy into a sampler. It's tough to get any kind of head out of it... You get a tiny, short-lived wisp of big bubbled, carbonated head that disappears as soon as you take your eyes off it. The beer is a pale straw color with moderate carbonation.

It's hard to detect much aroma unless you whiff from the can. Then you get some very light, subtle sweet malt with some metal. Hops are very subdued, with a very mildly bitter aftertaste, and a slight floral quality that combines with the malt to create a light honey character. A bit of skunk becomes more noticeable as it warms. Thin, watery mouthfeel.

This beer is quite drinkable but suffers a bit from a lack of head and mouthfeel. There is a bit of noticeable skunk, which may seem somewhat surprising from canned beer- perhaps it's intentional. (I've heard Caribbean countries do this on purpose). I paid roughly $2.59 for the tallboy at a local convenience store.

This beer has an odd chemical flavor. I don't like it. It has a lot of potential. But the odd flavor and artificial feeling dryness ruin it. It is a good looking darker pale lager. There is decent malt character to this beer. But overall its just an okay beer at best.

A decent beer if you're looking to get more quantity for what you normally would pay for. Overall, with a few friends around to pass the time, I'd down these to share some good times. Not the best of Mexican beers i have had, but it would do fine in a pinch. I will say this, however, I would be interested to try it out of a bottle. I think this idea of cans being a way to deliver beers to consumer is bogus (personal opinion, of course.)

A modest pour produces a body slightly darker than most macro lagers. The head appears and disappears in the blink of an eye. Carbonation is modest, to say the least.

The nose is bolder than some macro lagers, but that's not necessarily a good thing. Sweet corn aromas are stronger than in most American macros. I don't pick up much by way of hops.

Modelo Especial's taste is typical of the style. Sweet malt up front, musky hops in back. Somewhere in the middle there's a faintly sour taste. This either makes the flavor profile more sophisticated or renders the beer slightly bland by cutting the sweetness of the malt. When sampled repeatedly in rapid succession against the other macro I'm reviewing, Tecate, Modelo Especial does taste more complicated. I had favored Tecate at first, but as the beers warm, and as I continue sipping, Modelo Especial manages to keep my attention longer.

The body of this beer is fuller than I expect from macro lagers. Not bad. Nothing to write home about.

Overall, I doubt that I would reach for a Modelo Especial unless forced to choose between it and its north-of-the-border cousins.

Poured a clear golden color with no head. Standard, but not horrible. Scents of maize, lager yeast and malt. Standard for an American Adjunct Lager. Flavor is mild, beginning with malt, maize and lager yeast, these flavors stay throughout, with a mild hop bitterness showing up in the middle and lingering on the aftertaste, with a bit of a metallic twinge, but not a lot. It's pretty good, mild but refreshing, with a higher hop character than some AALs I've had, and a decent malt and adjunct flavor. Mouthfeel is light bodied with high carbonation. Yet again standard for the style. Overall, when rated to it's style, this is a good beer. It has more flavor than many domestic options and has little of the offensive flavors other Mexican lagers can sometimes have. If it's one's only option for a lager, for instance at a Mexican restaurant, or you want a decent, inexpensive lawnmower lager, this is a good choice.

Logged from notes. This brew was consumed during my Mexico in October of 2011. Pours a pale fizzy yellow with a quickly dissipating head. The nose has musty corn notes along with bread and zero hops. Not very pleasant. The taste is nearly flavorless aside from some faint corn paired with metallic flavors. A mild sweetness is present at the finish, but mainly just watery. Mouthfeel is light, fizzy, and a bit sharp. Overall, this is below average even for an AAL.

Poured from a 24 ounce can into a liter mug. The beer pours clear golden with a frothy white head. There are lots of visible tiny bubbles in the glass. The beer smells like grain husks with some sweetness. It has the classic American lager aroma. What you get in the flavor is a very straightforward pale lager. You get the flavor of the barley malt, but there aren't a lot of hop notes here. They weren't strong in the aroma, but there is some minor back end bitterness. The body is light with strong carbonation. The finish is crisp and dry. This beer is highly drinkable. This is a good beer.

12oz can at fridge temp poured into a pint glass.

Purs out a bright golden yellow color, kinda what my pee looks like after I drink an energy drink. Big, fizzy white head quickly fades to a super thin, patchy, soapy layer. Super clear.

Smells like absolutely nothing. Maybe the slightest buttered corny grains.

Mineral water, hose water, slightest buttered sweet grain.

Thin, watery, but not really overcharged like most.

Worst than most macro lagers. AVOID!

Poured from a 24oz can into a standard pint glass.

Appearance: Pours a clear pale gold with a finger wide head of foam that disappeared quickly and left very little lacing.

Smell: Smells like any other AAL. Some grain, corn, and that's really about it.

Taste: Zero bitterness, a lot of malt, corn, and a fair amount of sweetness compared to other beers in this style. Very little after taste, this beer goes down really easy.

Mouthfeel: Very light mouthfeel with a moderate amount of carbonation. Leaves very little trace once swallowed down.

Overall: Probably my favorite maco Mexican beer, which might not be saying much, but it's still decent.

A: The beer is crystal clear yellow in color and has a moderate amount of visible carbonation. It poured with a half finger high white head that quickly died down, leaving a thin layer of bubbles covering the surface and a collar around the edge of the glass.
S: Light aromas of corn and grainy malts are present in the nose.
T: The taste is similar to the smell and has initial flavors of corn (and hints of sweetness) followed by notes of grainy malts and a light amount of hop bitterness.
M: It feels light-bodied (but not really watery) on the palate and has a moderate amount of carbonation.
O: This beer is easy to drink and isn't really that bad when compared to other beers in the style.

I bought this beer at the local market an decidied to try it out.

Appearnace: Pours a crystal clear medium slightly golden yellow and brwon. amll amounts of lacing are observed.

Smell: Light to moderate aromas of t malts, especially corn along with some hops.

Taste: The taste is very bland moderate body of light maltand lots of corn . There is a light bitterness.

Mouthul: moderate amounts of carbonation. It is over carbonated, lending it a touch of sharpness at end of swallow . It is too heavy and thick for the lack of flavours.

Overall. It is pretty bland beer. This beer is price at the high end price range Going for one looar a beeer. Icehouse, natural ice, pbr, coors are lots better options for a cheaper price. I would choose Corona or Lecate over this beer.

Poured from a 24 oz. can into a dimpled beer mug.

This is the 7th beer in my great American Adjunct lager hunt.

A-Deep gold, looks better than the typcial Adjunct piss yellow color. Poured a 1/2 finger soda water head that fizzled quickly and left a slight white ring around the edges of the beer. No lacing at all. Lower carbonation in the glass.

S-Grain, sweet corn, rice, and a slight skunky smell.

T-For a cheap Mexican-American Adjunct style lager, it actually had some sweet malt character. Of course the dominant tastes were corn and rice. The aftertaste was wet and didn't leave a strong aftertaste, which is what I like in a good brew.

M-Highly carbonated and it did quench my thirst. There was an element of crispness to this, but nothing too special. Quite watery, really.

Overall-I had no expectations when I bought this. It surprised me more than I thought it would. It wasn't spectacular, and in fact, it was quite average. It's just a good way to wash down spicy food.

From the 12 fl. oz. can marked K0720039-14:41. Sampled on February 19, 2013

I made some homemade salsa and I just had to crack open a can of Mexican beer. Today it happened to be Modelo Especial. The pour is a nice golden yellow with a fizzy white head the dissolves quickly.

I did use the lime wedge so most of my analysis is tainted. But ignoring the lime I get a corn, pale grainy malts, and a clean hop character.

The body is light and creamy.

The taste has this bready malt forward note with a clean hop finish. It does what it is supposed to do.

Bought with lunch at a local Mexican restaurant...served chilled in a can along with a frosted glass. I started drinking out of the can, and then poured into the glass after the chill left.

A=Very nice, darker golden...very good for the style. Only a bit of a head.

S=I don't remember smelling much, other than a faint whiff of hops...no corn smell.

T=For the style, this is much better than Corona, Bud, and most other BMC's--sturdy maltiness with moderate hopping, and not too sweet. Still a bit less flavorful than, say, Batch 19.

M=Moderate body...perhaps a bit too much carbonation, but not overpowering.

O=For an AAL, it is hard to do much better...would like to see more body and flavor, but a good representation for a session beer...I would like to try on tap.

Golden body with a fleeting white head. Pretty standard Mexican lager aroma: mildly sulfuric lager yeast, pale malt sweetness, slight DMS. Not much else to it. It's reasonably clean and doesn't offend. Tastes more or less the same. Pretty clean fermentation aside from a bit of DMS. Slightly metallic, with a pale malt sweetness and a touch of sweet corn. Not much bitterness to the finish. Not an offensive beer by any means, and it's good for washing down spicy Mexican food.

A: clear, yellowish-copper, almost no head that dissipated by the time I set the can down

S: fruity, but not in a good way... almost like juicy fruit gum, bread, no hop smell

T: starts out with heavy breads malt and finishes with a small amount of bitter, not much else here

M: light, little carbonation, very sessionable

O: not bad for a typical light lager, but too exepensive in america, though it's much cheaper in mexico; it's a good canoe beer (when you flip the canoe over, it's not a huge loss!)

S - Creamed corn, slight apple juice, rice adjunct

T - Creamed corn, rice adjunct, medium amounts of apple juice. Pretty easy drinking for an AAL

M - Heavy carbonation with a medium body. Standard of the type.

O - Not half bad for an Adjunct. I'd have it again for a party

Pours water clear yellow color with a small 1 finger foamy white head that faded very quickly, leaving a layer on top and minimal spotty lacing.

Smells of malt, grains, biscuit, light citrus hops, corn husk and faint caramel. Typical nose for this style and not exciting at all.

Tastes like the nose, with malt, grains, biscuit, light citrus hops, corn husk, lemon zest, grass and faint caramel. The lemon adds some bitterness and makes this tastier than most other Mexican beers.

Mouthfeel is light, crisp and almost watery, with light bubbly carbonation, a very light body body, and a dry finish that has some mild bitterness.

Overall not too exciting, but it’s better than most Mexican beers, and even most lagers for that matter; a very nice low ABV barbeque beer that is refreshing and easy to quaff.

Not much here to speak of. A medium golden color with little to no carbonation. I poured into a pint glass to review the head. I looked away for 3-5 seconds and the head was gone! Aroma was a light malt. Taste was again a slight malt that left nothing on the palate. The finish was average. Overall, too watered down to give much consideration. Overpriced for the taste and quality. For a summer grilling, I'd get more from a PBR at half the cost.

A: Pours a crystal clear medium slightly golden yellow in color with moderate amounts of visible carbonation. The beer has a half finger tall bright white head that quickly reduces to a very thin film covering the majority of the surface and a very thin ring at the edges of the glass. Minimal amounts of lacing are observed.

S: Light to moderate aromas of adjunct malts, especially corn along with some very light notes of grassy hops.

T: The taste is very similar to the smell with a light to moderate body of light malt flavors and lots of corn (including a steamed corn husk flavor like in tamales). There is a light bitterness.

M: Light bodied with moderate amounts of carbonation. Slightly thin/watery.

O: This is much better than a lot of the other mass market Mexican beers being sold in the US. I find this beer to be pretty refreshing and matches very well with salty/spicy foods. Very easy to drink, especially on a hot summer day.

I don't know why anyone would pay twice as much for a twelver of this as you would for a twelver of PBR. The triumph of marketing over common sense.

If only Beer Advocate had a category for marketing. This one would meter out very highly, as would Corona, Foster's or Heineken.

Poured into a standard pint glass. The beer is a clear golden color. A fizzy white head dissipates quickly, leaving absolutely nothing, no lacing. The beer smells nutty, sour, and grainy. The taste is slightly chemical, metallic, and maybe eventually grainy. The mouthfeel is medium bodied.

Overall, even though I could give this beer all 1's for ratings, it's a good canned grilling beer. Not the best Mexican lager either, but sort of a sentimental class for me. Better than BMC, but not as good as Euro lagers. Meh.

this is a terrible beer, stright up. pours watery pee color with a one inch white... wait, nope, the head is already gone. smells like the can, corn syrupy, metallic, watery malt. flavor isnt much better, has a strange almost chemically flavor that also sits weird in the gut. no flavors of normal beer ingredients at all. feel is semi-redeeming here, light and bubbly, but still too watered down to be of much use. if it was on the verge of frozen it might refresh to some extent, but this is a rotten can of beer. nothing like the other modelo products ive had, which arent bad mexican lagers.

My favorite German-Mexican beer.

Aroma - Crisp, light malt & yeast smell and hint of hops.

Taste - Same as aroma. Refreshing & light. Made for big gulps to accompany a cheap meal.

Overall - While this is not the beer I would chose if I was stuck on a deserted isle & only got one more beer to drink for the rest of my eternity (Schneiderweiss-Nelson), I will happily put a few back while munching on tongue tacos. Thank the land for German brewers migrating to Mexico!

S - even though my beer is ice cold, its still smells like urine with slight maltiness

T = very ordinary and grainy for an adjunct. Decent plain flavoring and easy to drink. Nothing bad to note in flavor.

Mouthfeel - nice and water to quench the thirst

Overall - This is a take it or leave it beer. Fine if offered. Not worth going out of way to find. Take anything from a gas station and you'll be in just as good as this. I don't feel very mexican or tropical vibe drinking it either.
