Had 3 pints of the stuff last week at a Mexican restaurant in Austin and 1 12 ounce bottle as I write this. Don't understand the reviews that talk about a "good head" or "white bubbly head" because neither the drafts at the restaurant or my bottle tonight (poured into a Spigelau stemmed Pilsner glass, in case you're wondering) had any head on them at all. If you want a bland, flat, dark beer, this is for you. I will go elsewhere. (433 characters)

poured a deep amber colour, good head on it. I noted little smell to it at all. the taste is sweet and malty. A good mouth feel was light slightly crisp and refreshing (the way a good summer brew aught to be). All and all a good everyday beer. kinda a good combination of no frills and entrigue. (296 characters)

Negra Modelo is probably my go-to drink, when I want a beer while eating Mexican food. I actually prefer it over Corona. I think it has better flavor than Corona, but still light feeling on the palate. And obviously it pairs very well with spicy Mexican food. Though, I will say, it's best served with a wedge of lime. (322 characters)

This is my "go-to" commercial beer. I can't, scratch that, don't want to afford to drink $5/bottle beer every time so I find NM to be the best "commercial" (a.k.a. cheap) beer I like to drink. Sure, it's Mexican, but that's not a slam. I used to drink Dos XX Amber before they changed it and Bohemia back in the day while in Mexico or at an upscale Mexican restaurant. OK, I digress.

Dark in color without the expected smokiness/caramel of the ilk. This makes it a cleaner, more refreshing drink as an everyday. Would not call this out as a typical or standard Amber/Black but I like the balance in the flavor but miss a bit of aromatics.

At Walmart everyday for $12.47/12 pk. Rite Aid for $12.99 on sale and recently on sale at Albertson's for $5.99/6. (761 characters)

Pours a dark amber (brown) with a garnet cast. Outstanding head volume, lacing and retention.

Nice rich nose of malt, a bit of herbal hops and a nice caramel airiness.

Heavy light body with a smooth texture. Nicely carbonated with a whiff of effervescence in the middle and an almost prickly burst in the finish.

The flavor profile is very good. It is a bit weak in intensity, not very complex but is well balanced. It begins with a grainy semisweet background that flows into a mild bitterness in the middle. This bitterness is tea like with a touch of lemon. Caramel never really comes to the forefront, it remains rather ghost like in the background. The finish is clean with a very subtle tea like bitterness lingering. (734 characters)

I've walked by this beer a few dozen times and have never even considered it. Always to be found on a shelf in a run down astore in the not so nice part of town, the kinda place where the guy out the door is trying to sell bootleg movies and begfor change to try and supplement his Natty Daddy habit.

But damn this place has some good pizza. Anyway, on to the review..

Look - Pours a see through brownish copper with a half finger of white head and doesn't leave a spot of lacing.

Smell - Toasty pretty much as expected. No cheapies come through, but the smell isn't exactly tantalizing.

Taste - Toasted malts and a small shot of the grains. Easy going and inoffensive.

Feel - Sits lightly bodied with moderate carbonation and adds a touch of smoke.

Overall - The epitome of an average, easy drinking, though more flavorful than other cheapies beer. (855 characters)

From a bottle into a pint glass

Pour is golden copper in color with medium foam and retention.

Nice brew with Plenty of citrus hops and yeasty malt flavors. Well balanced and refreshing. Great with spicy food (211 characters)

From carrefour. In Duvel glass. Playing KB Dark Side. Little body and aroma, not deep black. No trace of the coffee and-or dark chocolat typical of other black beers. Easy to drink, with little alcoholic effect. (211 characters)

Target was selling six-packs for $4.99 which seemed odd but legit. A lot of the appeal comes from the flashy gold label. Inside, a fairly average Mexican lager. Probably needs a lime in it to bring out the citrus notes/smell of most Mexican beers. Low carbonation, okay mouthfeel, leaves a sour aftertaste. Will drink if it's available, but for a whopping 170 calories per bottle, I'd save up for something a little better. (423 characters)

A once great beer that unfortunately got popular so its not given the proper time to brew and kicked out for distribution/demand quickly. also if stored warm on the shelf it loses a lot of its richness qualities.

Plus+ a relatively easy drinking dark beer option for day time drinking when hot and thirsty.

complements spicier Mexican food without being to filling.

Good but not great/worth trying if never tried and definitely better than the breweries Corona extra where a lime squished in is required. (516 characters)

First time drinking this beer. It's Cinco de Mayo so it felt right. Overall a nice, refreshing beer. Not heavy at all. Smooth and light, with a hint of a hoppy aftertaste. There is an aftertaste that hangs around afterwards. Nothing that won't stop me from getting this again. (276 characters)

This beer has it all: tastiness, low to moderate mouthfeel, gorgeous rich dark appearance, fresh smell. It’s wonderfully crafted and great all around. I’m a fan. When the fridge gets low or runs out it’s never long before I restock the Negra. (253 characters)

Once served I grabbed the lime and tossed it - wiped the glass. Perfect copper color with off white foam and lacing. Subtle smell of lager goodness and sweet bread. Taste is sweet bread and molasses with a touch of hops to create a dry finish. A bit of fine carbonation and slickness. This is a very fine lager - give it a try! (327 characters)

Not a bad brew to have with Mexican food. A hint of syrupy sweetness helps balance the spicy flavors of the food. However, there is an aftertaste that makes it tough for me to get through. (188 characters)

Light brownish-red body; thick, foamy head; Fruity, caramel aroma; nutty. Bitter taste offset with a mild, toasted grain sweetness. Primarily light bodied; smooth with a mildly bittersweet finish.

A respectable, decent tasting brew. I generally find it offered at most Mexican restaurants and becomes my go-to brew for such occasions. It offers enough roasted grain character and warmth with a complementary hop bitterness to make it stand out over most commonly offered Mexican brewery offerings. (498 characters)

Pours a dark, brown, clear color with a very small foamy head from a tap. Head retention and lacing are minimal at best. Dark malty aroma. Hints of nuts and caramel (maybe). Slightly sweet taste with heavier malts, nutty and slight caramel. Not much of a hoppy bitterness. It is a good beer to try if you are looking to go from crap to craft, but not a beer craft lovers would consistently buy. Maybe as a cheaper beer to bring to parties instead of the mass produced adjuvant lagers. (490 characters)

OK, not a winner. But I try to represent in every style. As far as Mexican macros (is there a Mexican anything else? Sincerely, let me know!) it's better than Pacifico, Corona, etc. Be at the beach or you'll be disappointed (223 characters)

The closer to light, the redder, the further from light, the browner. Transparent for the color. Light gray-brown head which quickly turns to a film, lasts awhile longer before completely disappearing. Smell is nutty and sweet. Also it is just barely estery. Judging from this it is perhaps a little old, but still tastes the same as always to me; good; very much of caramel and malt, faintly woody, chocolatey, alcoholic and perhaps a hint of black cherry (I'm serious, took me a while to figure out what it was). Mildly bitter throughout. Well balanced, highly carbonated, medium to full bodied. Lightly coats the teeth. Finish is at first wet and then warming. As refreshing as a pilsner, as comforting as an ale. (716 characters)

From the bottle in a glass. Pours a reddish-brown with a nice head that lasts. Smells of roasted nuts and chocolate. Tastes sweet and then bitter in a good balance like the aroma. Full bodied feel and slightly bitter going down. Overall my go-to beer in a Mexican restaurant. (275 characters)

Serving Type: 32 oz. Draught at Hooters in Cancun, Mexico

A- Light Brown (think milk chocolate), slight ruby tinge. 1 finger width of creamy white head

S- Lots of malt sweetness.

T- Malt sweetness and hints of caramel. Tad bit of bitterness on the finish

M- Low to Medium carbonation and a good heavy body.

O- After drinking Corona, Dos Equis, Superior Rubia, etc., it was awesome to find a Mexican beer that didn't taste like corn and/or urine. Definitely getting this one again, although it is a tad on the heavier side and is quite filling. (549 characters)
