What good can I say about this beer? Well, it's not terrible — and it's a far sight better than pale Mexican swill like Corona, Sol and Pacifico.

It poured an amber colour into my pilsner glass. So far, so good: it looks like a Vienna lager should. Alas, the smell doesn't live up to the promising beginning. The grassy hops and caramel aroma from the malt are present, but seem out of proportion and overshadowed by some citric smell that seems totally out of place.

The taste is bland, though again, there's a hint of incongruous citrus flavour — like this is a dark Corona with the lime put right into the beer! Add the thin, watery body and I have little reason to seek this one out in future. (705 characters)

A: The beer poured clear light amber in color with an off white head.

S: There are light to moderate aromas of malt. Pretty one dimensional.

T: The taste is fairly similar to the smell...one dimensional. Some sweetness but not much depth of character.

M: Very light-bodied....watery. Carbonation is OK.

D: The beer is very easy to drink, but not very memorable. Better than a Bud but not something to be searched out unless nothing much else is available. (459 characters)

I bought a six pack of Negra Modelo for Cinco de Mayo. Poured in to a pint glass.

Pours a walnut brown color, and is clear. A fizzy off white head disappears quickly. Few bubbles in the beer, looks like mild carbonation.

The smell is faint, some grain aromas, not much else.

The taste is OK, but not great. It's a fairly simple bland combination of roasted grain, and mild bitter hops.

Mouthfeel is crisp but a bit thin and watery. Not much body to this one.

Still it i a very drinkable beer. Sessionable, not filling, tastes Ok. I'd buy it again to pair with Mexican food, but that's about it. (610 characters)

Negra Modelo, after a hard pour, yields a fast-collapsing beige head
over an attractive coffee colored brew. Carbonation is high, and the
nose is barley malt and lager yeast. The flavor is a slightly toasty malt
with a note of something I can't pin down- chicory maybe, with a bit of
an herbal hop finish. There's a bit of grain in the aftertaste and a bit of
grass. This is one of the better Mexican lagers I've had, but unfortunately
that's really not saying much. It's pretty one-dimensional, and there's
something that's just wrong about it. (546 characters)

pours a light amber brown with a 1 finger head that leaves no lacing

smell of carmel malts and grassy hops

tastes of sweet carmel malts and grassy hops - might be a tad thin - reminds me a lot of Boston Lager

mouthfeel is nice and light little watery - nice carbonation and smooth

drinkability is good a nice full flavored light lager

update: later that night a got a killer headache and the only time beer does to me is when i drink the cheap stuff so drinkability goes from 4 to 1 - never again (503 characters)

Reviewed from notes.

ABV 5.3%, bottle of 355 ml.

Pours an amber colour, a tone or two darker than an iced tea.Head disappeared straight away.Light caramel smell.
Taste follows the smell, tastes of bitter chocolate, nothing too special though.
Quite thick on the body and medium carbonation.
It has to go a long way to reach Bohemia Obscura. (342 characters)

Clear light brown with a definite mahogany slant. Not much of a head, but what's there is creamy light brown and makes a hasty exit.

Bready malt on the nose, with a slight toffee sweetness. No real hop notes. A bit one dimensional.

Very malty in the mouth. Finishes with a definite sweet note, really too sweet for me to drink without food. Could use a bit more carbonation, or some hop bitterness to balance all of that malt, and give some more interest. Still, a nice food match with rich Mexican stews, etc., and my tipple of choice at most Mexican restaurants. (570 characters)

Poured into a pilsner glass at Abuelo's Mexican Restaurant.

A - Dark chocolate in color with little head/lacing.

S - Some malty aromas but overall faint smell

T - Much lighter and crisp than expected. Maltier as well.

M - Watery Mexican beer.

D - Of the choices available there, it worked out pretty good, but I won't be adding it to the fridge anytime soon... (366 characters)

Dark ruby brew with good carbonation and an off-white small bubbled head. Very low retention and lace.
Smells like cherries, sweet cherries and a little syrup/molasses thing and some good malt character.
Taste mildly of cherries and has a very astringent flavor and effect on the tongue. Decent hop presence and some diacetyl.
Moderate fullness of body but not something I could have more than one of in a night.

Thought I would try something different than a Corona at the Mex. restaurant. Heard good things about this beer. Came with a frosty glass, which I allowed to get closer to room temp before I poured. Minimal head that dissipated very quickly. Slight lacing. Sweet smelling. Mid to high carbonated. I felt bloated after drinking, which left me very burpy. Finished a little bitter, but had light to medium body to it. Very drinkable beer (if you don't mind the bloated feeling). Not that impressed. (496 characters)

Found one of these in the fridge, left over from a party. Pours a nice deep amber color, hardly any head to speak of despite a vigorous pour. There is an odd odor here, rotten fruit? Do I have a skunky bottle? Tastes malty and of metal. Metal flavor seems to have control. Head is already gone after two sips. Bottle says it's a dark beer, it looks like a dark beer, but doesn't have the complexity of a good dark lager beer. (425 characters)

Ordered a bottle along with dinner at a Mexican restaurant on Comm Ave last Saturday night. Poured into a tall pilsner glass. Doesn't look like most Mexican beers, as it's a dark tan color. Vienna lager is an interesting take for a Latin brewery. No head at all, and lots of carbonation. A bit malty on the tongue, it tastes just like most easy drinking lagers. While this beer is nothing special, at least instead of filling up on fizzy yellow beers and enchilladas, you can fill up with fizzy brown beers. Something different to drink at a Mexican joint, so it's not all that bad. (582 characters)

Had this one at a local Mexican restaurant while caSSino was down from Charlotte visiting. Served from bottle into an Anarctic frozen mug. Poured amber with a one finger tan head that subsided to a minimal amount slowly (after the head thawed out of course). The aroma was comprised of sweet malt, roasted malt, cream, and wheat. The flavor was of sweet malt, cream, dark chocolate, wheat, and roasted malt. It had a light feel on the palate with medium-high carbonation. Overall this was an average brew. Really nothing on this one stood out to me at all. I did like how this one had a bit of dark chocolate in it to add some character, but the wheat flavor I got here just didn't impress me at all. Got this as it was ranked as one of the best Mexican brews on the menu according to BA, but I guess I should have gone with a strawberry Margarita like caSSino chose to do... (875 characters)

Pours a dark copper color with a small light brown head.

Aroma of sweet malts and light hops in the background.

Taste is sweet malts and caramel. Some light spiceyness in there.

Mouthfeel is light bodied and lightly cleansing.

Overall, a drinkable brew but nothing too exciting. I haven't had this for a long time and was expecting more. (341 characters)

Negra Modelo

had on tap at pappa's cantina in austin tx. they had a cheap selection and this was the only semi-flavorful beer besides shiner bock.

it's a deep amber/brown color with a thick foamy head that sticks around for a long time and leaves some lace. the nose is simple. corn, somewhat buttery. a little malty. taste is unassuming. tastes like a typical adjunct lager with some buttery caramel malts. well carbonated, easy on the palate. sippable for sure.

not bad for a bar beer when there's not much else available, but i wouln't run out to buy a 6. probably one of the better cerveza. (598 characters)

Pours brown like you would expect. Little head. Clear and transparent, not cloudy, no chunks or floaties.

The smell is faint, but what is there is a bit of malts.

This tastes like water and beer flavor and carbonation mixed. Some malt and a bit more hop. Not too interesting.

Mouthfeel is okay, a bit creamy but a bit watery too.

Finish is a bit creamy, but also kind of stale-beer like.

This is drinkable but boring beer. I wouldn't look for this, but if it were handed to me I could enjoy it anyway. (517 characters)

Always my beer of choice when at a Mexican restaurant and faced with the usual uninspired line-up.

A: Poured straight into a tulip - maybe two finger soapy, bubbly head that did not stick around. Small traces of lacing. Body shows lots of carbonation and has a ruby brown color, like root beer.

S: Very light toasted malt, raw corn with a little nuttiness to it.

T: Very little in the way of flavor. Slight, barely toasted malt, grains with a hint of bitterness. In all honesty, it tastes much like most macro lagers - with just a bit more flavor.

M: Decent for the style i suppose. Good carbonation, crisp and fairly light.

Negra will still be my go to at the taqueria, but after reviewing and really trying to taste the beer my affinity for it has waned. It's ok, but not as good as I used to say it was. (813 characters)

I poured this beer into my tumbler at 50 degrees. The beer was coca-cola colored. The beeer poured a nice head but it did not last long at all. It left decent lacing, but really, who cares about that? The beer smelled sour to me. Taste was a little sweet and a little flat tasting. No good to me I will not buy agaiun as I have tried this beer repeadedly and always get the same bad beer. (388 characters)

Not a bad Mexican beer, head and shoulders above Corona or Corona light. Decent beer that does not require the addition of a lemon or lime. In addition, this beer is not bad as it warms a bit. Carbonation is good, but not overdone. To be honest, could not really detect an attributable scent with this beer. Would I go out of my way to buy this beer? No, but I would order the next time I am having Mexican food. (412 characters)

Poured into 12oz Tumbler Glass

Appearance - Dark Brown/Crimson with a very transparent appearance. Has a half finger head that quickly disappears. There's also no lacing left behind

Smell - Sweet Caramel with a slight hint of burnt malts and yeasts. Smell becomes slightly skunky later on

Taste - Caramel taste with surprisingly sweet notes. The malts are also fairly obvious here, along with a slightly grassy palette to top it off. It leaves a bittersweet aftertaste in your mouth as well

Mouthfeel - Overall body is moderate and it's fairly easy to drink, but there are smoother beers out there in terms of body. The carbonation is also fairly moderate so it's not too fizzy.

Overall - In short, it's an okay beer but one that makes me glad that I bought it as part of a custom six pack. I wouldn't go out of my way to try it again. It's a fairly average beer that's familiar to most of us, but at the same time there's really not alot going for it (956 characters)

Appearance: It has a nice clear deep copper/amber color to it. It has a thin white head that dies down fast and leaves next to no lacing.

Smell: The aromas definitely give out hints of sweet roasty/toasty malts, caramel and a slight nuttiness.

Taste: Like the aromas, it has some roasty malts with some sweet caramel and some nuttiness. Not a whole lot going on here.

Mouthfeel: It has a med/high carbonation with a light overall balance and feel.

Drinkability: It's a very smooth drinkable beer accompanied with decent flavors and aromas. (546 characters)

A - This beer is a drab brown tint, like tannic streamwater. Visibly thin, with a soda wisp of bubbles.

S - Vaguely sweet malt is about all I get here, perhaps a suggestion of honey. Inoffensive.

T - The taste is watery and mineral-y and has a slight honey sweetness.

M - Feel is thin and watery, but works well for a Mexican Lager.

O - I would not be terribly interested in drinking more than one of these, but it is ok with Mexican food.

It is best used as a base for a Michelada, which I do quite often. To keep this review as useful as possible, here is a recipe for the Sangrita which comprises the non-beer half of Michelada:

1/4 cup lime juice
1 cup orange juice
2 cups tomato juice, Clamato or V8
1 tablespoon of minced onion
1 tablespoon of very finely chopped cilantro
1 tablespoon of minced jalapeno
Stir all ingredients, chill for at least 20-30 minutes to let the flavors marry, then serve. Keeps overnight, may be better that way. (952 characters)

Poured from a 12 oz bottle into a frosted mug.

The beer pours a slightly hazy amber brown, with a red hue. About an inch of bubbly head rose about an inch, and dissipated quickly.

Smells of caramel, very mild hops, slightly metallic, and sweet malts.

Taste is mostly just clean, crisp, and cold. I let it warm a bit due to the frosted mug, even though I knew there would still not be much there. Some caramel, sweet malts, and light bitterness.

Mouth feel is light, with medium carbonated. Fairly watery.

Overall, an easy drinker, but not something to seek out. However, the fact this beer is served in a brown bottle, with gold foil at the top shows that they at least care to protect this beer from light & skunk, unlike say Corona or Sol for example. It is not a great beer by any means, but it is palatable. Probably your best choice to pair with spicy Mexican food while at a Mexican restaurant, which is how and why I had it. (941 characters)

Appearance: Darker gold in color with fizzy carbonation that does not last for long. Little lacing.
Smell: Not much in the way of aroma- some light maltiness for the most part.
Taste: A bit robust upon first taste, then thins a little towards the end of the taste with a little hop bitterness and a grainy overall flavor quality. Clean finish, though I notice a slight metallic aftertaste.
Mouthfeel: Overall a bit thin.
Drinkability: Drank this without food- I hear it goes well with Mexican. Nonetheless, a decent lager that can be a nice change-up from some of the macro offerings. (586 characters)
