On draft into a standard pint glass on 5/27/2013.

Appearance: Clear, medium/dark brown, very little foam.

Aroma: The smell is dominated by roasted malt. It is pretty simple.

Taste: Sweet malts, very little bitterness, and less roasted flavor than the aroma suggests.

Mouthfeel: The mouthfeel is very light with good carbonation.

Overall: Negra Modelo is pretty good for what it is--typically the best beer on draft at the Mexican restaurants near my house.

On tap at Shorty's
Comes to the table a fairly clear medium brown color with a smallish off white head that had all but dissipated before the glass got to my table. Smells of caramel and a hint of butterscotch with a faint grainy almost bready malt in the background. Very light floral hop aroma. The flavor is mostly caramel, but it tastes fake. Moderate sweet maltiness is offset with a burnt butterscotch and faint spicy hop flavor. Medium body with a moderate level of carbonation and a sweet mouthfeel. Vienna lager is quite a stretch here, dark adjunct lager fits better in my mind. Nothing horrible here, but the artificial taste and lack of complexity kills this one for me.

It comes in a medium brown color.

It has a good caramel color and malty flavor, but it cuts off quickly and with a strange finish. However, for an easy to find beer that is cheap, I certainly recommend this malty beer that has a light/medium body.

I highly recommend this macro. Take that for what it means.

On tap at BTB in Ann Arbor, MI. Modest brown color, through and through. Moderate transparency with a small, wispy head that vanishes pretty abruptly. This beer has a clean, crisp, faint citrus smell with a very small malty undertone. It tastes like roasted malts and toasted bread with not much of a citrus taste like the smell might give off. There is, however, an element of sweetness to this beer, just a bit. The body is very thin, crisp, clean, and refreshing, providing a moderately dry finish.

Negra Modelo is a very simple beer that isn't great but isn't bad either. Many of the Mexican chain restaurants around my house serve this beer, and it compliments a burrito much better than a Corona or Dos Equis.

Served on tap at The Cubano in Hoboken, NJ

A: Pours a clear dark amber in color with some moderate amounts of visible carbonation. The beer has a half finger tall off-white head that reduces to a thin film covering the majority of the surface of the beer and a slightly thicker ring at the edges of the glass. Light to moderate amounts of lacing are observed.

S: Light to moderate amounts of caramel malts with a light amount of sweetness and just a hint of nuttiness.

T: Similar to the smell, the flavor of this beer has a light to moderate body of caramel malts that imparts some light amount of sweetness upfront. There are some hints of nuts and a light hop bitterness that lingers in the finish.

M: Light bodied with moderate amounts of carbonation. Smooth but slightly thin.

O: This beer is refreshing, easy to drink, and enjoyable. I could definitely put down a few of these in an evening and it pairs very nicely with the flavors of Mexican, Cuban, and South American food.

Comes out of the tap a barely translucent copper-brown with a decent pale tan head. Malty aroma has a fruity hint (but this might have come from the obligatory slice of lime). Flavor is better than I expected, malty and strong with a firm fruity undertone - quite tasty. Texture has good body and plenty of fizz. One of the best Mexican beers I have tried.

On-Tap @ Azteca Everett...

Came out a piss pour yellow/no head or lacing. huge lime wedge on the edge of the glass.

Not much smell to this. taste is much the same a splash of grain/malt. I squeezed in the lime halfway in... it didnt help things.

Overall a very generic tasting/boring beer.

Off-tap at the Cancun airport after a wonderful vacation with my beloved Russian girlfriend this beer was a clear, copper color with one finger of off-white head. The retention of the collar was ok but there was only modest lacing. The aroma was of toasted malt, light bready notes and some dry grains. Much better than any other beer I found in Mexico and it was a welcome change already. The flavors were similarly refreshing. I tasted the bready malt, a hint of nuts, toasted grains and a clean, dry finish. The mouthfeel was average, the body medium/light and the carbonation medium. Of the widely available Mexican beers this was by far the best and it was a great way to finish my vacation.

Was drinking margaritas at Tampicos in Santa Cruz, when I noticed they had NM on tap. I'd never seen this beer on draft before, and so of course I had to grab a glass.

The beer pours a reddish mahogany color, with fair head retention and minimal lacing. The nose is not bad at all in this beer (at least for a Mexican lager), as I picked up some cherry, sweet malt, light vanilla and even a hint of smoke. The flavor profile replicated the nose, with some light spritzy, bitterness in the finish. The beer is a bit watery (naturally), and so the dominating, sweet malt flavor wasn't too overpowering. Mouthfeel was light to medium bodied, with a clean, lightly sweet, spritzy finish. The beer was very drinkable and easy to appreciate, and would make a great accompaniment for most of the food items on the menu at Tampicos.

Not too bad at all... this beer reminded me very much of AB's American Ale, though it was bit less sweet and a bit more interesting to drink.

Poured on tap into an American pint glass @ Burrito Loco, Seattle. Pours a perfectly clear reddish brown with minimal head.

Aroma is a little bready w/ some dark caramel malt.

Taste follows nose, caramel malt and just a little graininess. Slightly fruity and sweet. To me slightly reminiscent of a doppelbock, but lighter and thinner.

Overall an easy drinking beer that went pretty well with my chicken mole, but not one I'd probably seek out as a standalone beer.

Enjoyed this 12oz bottle out of a classic beer glass at Mi Casita in Crofton, MD.

A: Pours a clear brown hue with a thin ½-finger white head that quickly dissipates in to a wispy lace.

S: Slight nutty aroma with a general sweet backbone.

T: Similar to the aroma the flavor is sweet with a nutty taste with hints of vanilla and caramel.

M: Medium body and medium carbonation.

O: Decent lager – very smooth and easily drinkable.

On tap, into a strange looking negro modelo glass

A - dark brownish color, can't see through it, little head, little activity

S - Caramel and vanilla, a bit or corn

T - sweet biscuity malts, lightly floral hops, slightly watery and metallic

M - Could use a bit mroe carbonation. A little to thin as well

O - Not bad, but nothing I'd go running for

On tap at Torero's in Raleigh.

Arrived a deep, dark brown with a thin lacing of off white head. Caramel and chocolate malt notes in the nose. Taste is rich, malty, smooth; caramel, chocolate malt, slightly nutty with subtle hops for balance. Medium bodied, well carbonated, easily drinkable.

Not at all a bad offering. Definitely one of the better beers coming out of Mexico.

Ordered draft pint at Salsa 17 with an excelent mexican meal - I had the Roasted Chicken with Mole Poblano...

Appearance - Came in a pint glass, color was cola and completely transparent, with a tan colored head - less than a finger of head with minimal lacing, but glasses likely washed in a dishwasher.

Smell - Slight molasses and toffee with dry bread, a little sweetness in the nose.

Taste - Crusty bread, slight malt sweetness, and some dry grassy (actually more like dry hay) hops in the finish.

Mouthfeel - Lite to medium mouthfeel, but pretty high carb. Was fairly smooth, but I feel that any sweetness in the nose may have been lost in the taste mostly by the crispness of the higher carb in this draft.

Overall - This was the "best beer" available at this restaurant, and the low sweetness and dryer characteristics of this pint made for a great pairing of the heavily flavored mole I enjoyed that evening. Not the greatest beer, but a Great pairing with my meal, and probly any full flavored mexican dish imho.

Served clear brown with orange highlighting, the head is soapy and thin. Mexican dunkel lager should almost be it's own category because they simply don't look the part of a brawny German dark lager.

Faint, modestly toasted aromas. Toffee with nuts, ripe fruit, and a touch of blonde tobacco.

Nutty toffee flavor with a prominent herbaceous tone. Bruised mini banana in the middle and finishes clean. High carbonation, though toasted malt hangs tougher than expected.

Close to good, and not a bad session option but far from a go-to bar beer (except in MX...)

From 07/18/11 notes. On tap at Los Tios in Alexandria, VA last night with dinner. Served in a pint glass.

a - Pours a dark brown color with some amber notes, one inch of white head and moderate carbonation evident. No head rentention or lacing on the glass.

s - Smells of toasted malts, bready malts, light toffee and caramel, roasted malts, and light fruit.

t - Tastes of toasted malts, bread, roasted malts, light caramel malts, light fruit, and some hops.

m - Light to medium body and moderate carbonation. Pretty easy to drink.

o - Overall a pretty average beer, but this was my go to in Mexico and still is at Mexican restaurants. Lots of malts but easy to drink, and a good alternative to the Corona's and Sol's usually offered. Woudl certainly order it again at a restaurant, though don't like it enough to pick up a 6 pack at the store with better options available.

Another on the mini tour. First time I've had this one on tap; amber color with next to no head. No aroma that I could tell, taste was malt, a little sweetness, and no bitterness. I actually kinda like this one: I'd get it with a Mexican dinner if there were not other "worthy" choices.

A: Looks to be a sort of watery dark brown color. Absolutely no head whatsoever when it came to me.

S: So you know when you're outside and it's raining/been raining and your pants get wet because some douche speeds through a puddle right next to you even though he easily could have gone around it and you leave your pants out on the balcony to dry and then come back three days later to check on them and you give them a sniff and they still smell dank and like puddle? Yeah, that's what this smells like.

T: Better than the smell, but I don't know how much that's saying. Grain, a little syrupy sweetness, honey and more grain with a creamy mouthfeel. If you gave me this next to Bud Light in a blind taste test, I would have a hard time telling them apart.

This beer isn't terrible if you find yourself in a pinch.

The beer pours thinly into my trusty Sam Adams glass

The smell is a little sour with no hint of chocolate or hops

the taste follows suit, being thin, a little sour and lite

The mouthfeel is ok, not horrible

If it's this or krap go with this!

Served on-tap at the airport Margaritaville in Cancun, Mexico. The beer was served in a mug. It presented a semi-hazed amber-brown color with no head. Caramel-malty nose. There was a very steady flow of carbonation present. The beer is slight dark caramel and molasses flavors riding a light, crisp body. There is a slightly dark and sweet aftertaste, with some sour notes and a hint of hops to balance. The finish is very quick and clean. Goes great with nachos, that's for damn sure.

On-tap at Flying Saucer served in a gold rimmed Negra Modelo pint glass a crisp dark brown with a thin khaki head. Aroma is slight dark malts and a hint of nuts. The taste is a small amount of dark malts, but not much else there. The beer is light and crisp with decent carbonation. This is a somewhat respectable Mexican beer, but one I'm glad I didn't have to pay for.

Draft pint at Front Street Cantina in Plainfield, IL.

Poured a dark copper with a light tan head. The head didn't last long, but the bartendar also put a lime in it, which was promptly removed.

Aromas of lightly roasted malts, and caramel. No discernable hop aroma. Not as malty as european versions.

First sip is refreshing, dark malts, a light bitterness, some caramel and crisp carbonation, no carbonic bite. Doesn't have the malt profile of the european versions of the style.

Mouthfeel is light, not quite watery, crisp, with good carbonation

Overall a very drinkable beer. Nothing offensive or extreme. Goes great with spicy mexican food. Better on tap than from the bottle.

Pours a reddish mahogany color, clear with minimal head. Scent is pale, light caramel malt and some notes of roasted nuts and earthy hops. A-Pours a deep ruddy amber color with a one finger head.

S-Caramelly and dark fruit munich malt notes. A pretty faint nose, but not bad one.

T-Dry and biscuity with some mild bitter herbal hop notes on the finish.
