Purchased and consumed at a bar outside the Tulum ruins.
Appears a transparent light amber with a small, off white head that quickly fades out into a mild cap. Mild spots of lacing are left around the glass.
Smell is of American 2-row, Crystal, & a touch of Munich and a hint of Chocolate malt. Pretty clean with a faint hint of hops buried in the background.
Taste is of the mentioned aromas with a sweet caramel flavor dominating the flavors.
Mouthfeel is light-medium bodied, smooth, gently spiced with hops, and easy drinking.

A: Nice amber color, with a one finger head that quickly dissipates to a small ring of bubbles.

S: A nice malty aroma, no discernible hop presence.

T: The taste is also dominated by malt but there is also a slight kick from hops. Leaves a caramel finish.

M/D: Thin bodied with lots of carbonation. A better option than most of the more popular Mexican beers widely available.

it was nice too see something a little different to drink in cozumel. amber color, clear, with a minimal off-white diminishing head. some light caramel in the nose and taste. doesn't look like an adjunct beer but you can tell by drinking it. not much hop character to speak of. light bodied. frothy mouthfeel.

León pours a dark and clear reddish brown in color, with a thin off-white head. A clear and viscous beer, it reminded me a bit of thin maple syrup, especially after the head headed for the hills.

Sweet caramely malts on the nose and on the tongue. Taste is a bit soda like, a light cream soda, with a thin carbonation letting off too quickly thus exposing the sweetness even more. Rather full in body as a result yielding a decent feel but not helping the drinkability too much.

Overly rich and underly complex compared to a Negra Modelo for example.

Calling León merely a 'cerveza negra' does little justice to the beer's strikingly glossy tone, its crystalline clarity, and its meticulously polished, chestnut-amber colour. Bright, flashy highlights abound as if it were the red carpet of a movie awards show; indeed, Leon sounds like the perfect one word name answer to the question 'who are you wearing?'

León has probably the least amount of detectable adjuncts of any Mexican beer I've smelled. It does have some though. But to my surprise, a perceptible amount of wholesome, toasty, biscuity Munich malt is noted, trumping at least a portion of the syrupy, cereal sweetness with whiffs of browned bread crusts. Far from ideal, but passable.

This beer has infinitely more flavour than the typical Mexican lager but it unfortunately has infinitely less than the typical German one too. Melanoidins (the rich, toasty, bread crust-like flavours) that come from using Munich malts - and, to be clear, a Munich dunkel should use almost exclusively Munich malt - are completely absent.

León may be inspired by "the taste of a Munich-style dark beer" (as Google Translate confirms), but it sure doesn't prescribe to the German Reinheitsgebot, the purity law that forbids diluting beer with inferior adjuncts. While not overtly tasted, the proof is in the mouthfeel: rather than possessing a rich, full body it is thin, watery and poorly attenuated.

León must be somewhat unusual for Mexican beer drinkers accustomed to yellow lagers (and a real treat for those who know there's more to beer than just that). That said, the Germans would likely deem it insipid and irreverent, and rightfully so considering the relative high quality, integrity and overall standard of their inveterate breweries.

Murky brown color with little lacing. Aroma is faint with only a hint of phenols and toasted malts. Slightly skunky as well. The most prominent flavor is the carbonation as evything else is so weak. Moderate amounts of ripened banana and toasted barley. Metallic, with a touch of DMS. Body is thinned, fortunately the carbonation keeps any vegetal off-notes from lingering. Maybe the bottle I had was frayed than the can, but there was a skunkiness all the way through this one that was not too good.

Not bad but I was also in Mexico and drinking it locally. One of th better Mex beer choices there.

appearance: amber, light brown, bubbly macro head

smell: slight hops to almost zero smell

taste: Little to none, clear refresher

mouthfeel: very high carbonation, thin

drinkability: smooth, very easy

bottle served at a bar off the Zocalo in Mexico City, Mexico. pours rich amber with a single finger of tan head. poor retention and no lacings.

aroma is of light caramel malts and a bit of lager yeast in the background. little else for the nose. resembles an amber lager in character.

taste is more of the same with a fresh quality and a curiously tasty profile, though it still is nothing of note.

mouthfeel is light bodied with a crisp finish and a pleasant drinkability.

drinkability is good. for an amber lager this is well done to an extent, but nothing to seek out. amber lagers are usually hit or miss, but this falls between the two. worth a shot.

Stumbled across this a couple times while in Mexico during a cruise.

Drank straight from the bottle on the streets in Cozumel, so the formalities of appereance, color, smell, etc were somewhat lost in the surroundings.

But bottom line, I had to search out & reached for this quite a few more times than the easily available Coronas.

Look: Dark brown color, bare head of foam with white burrs; Smell: Grain, roasted malt and toffee; Taste: Roasted malt, toffee, balanced with resiny hops; Mouthfeel: Refreshing, medium bitterness, high carbonation and medium body; Drinkability: Acceptable in all respects, the junior version of Negra Modelo, but the presentation is very bad.

Not a bad mexican beer, but I really have trouble distinguishing this from Modelo's Victoria, a supposed Vienna lager. Whatever, it's not bad and you can drink it on the beach. Overall a so-so lager. The flavor had its ups and downs with a licorice and light dry cocoa flavor. Worth seeking out if in Mexico, otherwise don't bother.

Poured this one into a pint glass in the restaurant today.

It poured a coppery/orange color into the glass, which isn't quite so "dunkel". It looks more like an average Vienna lager. Foam is about an inch and lasts less than a quantum physics phenomenon.

Smell is boring, with some malts and adjuncts.

Taste is soft, with malt/adjunct sweetness and a hint of caramel quickly contrasted by some burnt flavors. The burnt flavors are smooth, but more intense than those you'd get in a bottle of guinness draught...extra points for that. No hop bitterness to speak of.

Feels is light, but not too light. It's just right for one of these soft-tasting beers, although carbonation is a bit high.

Overall, really good compared to its cousins, but still pretty boring.
