A - Lighter side of black color. Medium sized, somewhat thick, creamy, light beige head. Average retention leaving patchy lace.
S - Dull, bittersweet chocolate along with some stale, black coffee. Slight astringent aroma. Touches of cream and vainilla but it's hidden by the other flavors.
T - Similar to the nose. Dull, stale flavors. Bittersweet chocolate along with stale coffee/coffee grounds along with the astringency that can accompany that. There is some nice sweetness that comes out that really pairs nicely with the chocolate but it's a bit too faint.
M - Medium to light body. Average carbonation. Too thin/watery for the style.
D - The astringency and dull flavors aren't enough to make this undrinkable (or even hard to drink) but they don't make it one that I want to keep drinking. The body also doesn't do it any favors.
Notes: Not really wowed by this. It's not awful or undrinkable by any means, but it was pretty lackluster. Lack of a nice, chewy body was what disappointed me most (as that's a big reason why I enjoy Oatmeal Stouts). Probably would just pass this one over.

A random single I picked up on a recent trip to Duluth...
A - Pours a dark ruby red colour, finger of head with little retention and no lacing.
S - Quite nutty on the nose, roasted coffee, burnt chocolate and candied nuts, dark cocoa and a hint of vanilla.
T - Creamy chocolate with a unique earthy leafy, grassy, hop flavour, paper mache, dark cocoa and an odd latex/plastic flavour that lingers.
M - No complaints here, goes down smooth and finishes wet.
O - The odd flavour that lingered was a bit of a turn off. It could be an off bottle, though by no means to be interpreted as a drain pour. I would like to try this on tap and will be seeking out another sample next time I visit Duluth.

a - this looks the part, deep and dark with a tan head that laces nicely
s - too damn subtle, but what's there is good, grains, metallic, like a brown ale really, where's the oatmeal?
t - again, subtle... you have to do a bit of thinking to gather anything worth noting... it's like a dark, oat-dashed New Castle, not very impressive
m - decent, milky and an appropriate level of carbonation, don't expect anything spectacular but it works
o - average, that's about it

Pours a molasses, dark black brown with amber hues when held to the light, with a nice tan head, modest retention and lacing throughout. Big chocolate, biscuit, solid oatmeal aroma, cookie dough and a bit of smokiness. Great flavors, smokey caramel roasted malts, big biscuit oatmeal flavor, dark chocolate, chalky vanilla lactose in the finish with a very mild hop bitterness. Solid medium bodied stout, mouth feel is rich, chalky and slightly fizzy from the carbonation, very good.
