Picked this up the last time I swung through Duluth. I hadn't realized that LSBC made an Oktoverfest, but was excited to pick it up.

A: Pours a rich clear amber with a tan rocky head.

S: Not too much going on in the nose for me, just some toasted malts.

T: Starts off very pleasent with sweet soft malt up front, gets a little sharper towards the end; seemed slightly astringent. Not necessarily out of place for this style, as long as it is restrained. There was also a flavor undercurrent I couldn't quite distinguish, but it added to the complexit of the brew. I gave it a 4 for taste, but think a 3.75 (were that possible) is a better rating. Guess I'll round up.

M: It had a nice smooth soft mouthfeel, coating the palate.

D: Pretty drinkable, a nice Oktoberfest find and one I would come back to.

This beer was poured out from a bottle and into a pint glass. It looked amber in colour. Smelled of malt, spicy pepper, and slightly hoppy; a combination of different elements yet well balanced. Tasted a presence of malt, hop, and bitter hops. Seemed like a nice oktoberfest beer.

Would I buy this beer again? Probably.

Poured from 12 oz. bottle into a Sam Adams perfect pint glass. 2011 Bottle.

Appearance: Deep ruby reddish amber with some orange. Lots of bubbles and a solid three finger off white head with good retention. Decent amount of lacing.

Smell: Rich aroma of roasted caramel malts with some grains. Has a quite noticeable cinnamon like spice along with a light presence of earthy hops. Also some hints of nuts. Smells full and inviting.

Taste: Like the nose, a big upfront taste of roasted caramel malts with wheat grains. A good amount of spice and some rye. Finishes with a noticeable kick of hop bitterness. Very tasty and well balanced.

Mouthfeel: Medium bodied with a low to medium level of carbonation. Very smooth, creamy, and chewy.

Overall: A very solid American take on a Marzen. Malts are bold and everything is well balanced.

Clear medium orange appearance, compact and flat head of about 1/4 of an inch in height. Decent dripping laces. Aroma of baked bread, some slight toffee. Carbonation is shy of medium, body fairly light but with a coating quality. Nice flavor, a bit of dark caramel, toasted oat cereal flavors, a little bit of a woody sense at the finish. A little bit of a nuttiness. Straightforward and not any real flaws, good drinkability. Pleasant but maybe slightly unmemorable.

Thanks to Joe for this one!

Pours a dark coppery orange, compact layer of smooth creamy foam. Minimal lacing that forms a delicate arc or two in the glass, with lasting surface coverage. Good clarity, with a flurry of ascending carb trails visible throughout.

Dried fruit and nuts in the yeasty aroma. Cranberry or grape? Huh.

Tastes good, also fruity, a little bit of apple and grape, with a husky malt character, nutty and fairly bitter in the aftertaste. Smooth feel, easily drinkable. A little bit more bitter and fruity than most, it was interesting to try. Thanks again Joe!

Appearance is good with a nice copper/red color and little head and lacing. Smell and taste are good with some nice caramel malt, low on hops, low on spice and a sweet finish. Mouthfeel is a bit weak, light and some carbonation. Drinkability is pretty good, very true to the style.

Lake Superior Oktoberfest, their latest special edition, pours a big stiff
head over a slightly cloudy amber brew. Carbonation is steady, and
the nose is rich malt and herbal hops. The flavor is rich, slightly sweet
malt with an herbal hop finish. The flavors really do evoke the smells
of late summer meadows. This is how it's done. The mouthfeel is round
and satisfying, and there's good lacing all the way down. Simple stuff,
but really tasty- this is why it's better to drink local.

Really digging this offering from Lake Superior. Good color, clear and bright. It isn't overly sweet, but like a traditional marzen it has a lot of malt character. A little toasty and the malt has a lot of depth without coming across as too heavy bodied. Haven't always been a fan of Oktoberfests, but this is a clean beer and not too over the top with the malt bill. 77/100

This beer pours a clear bronze color. The head is one inch in height, and recedes quickly into minimal lacing. The aroma is malty and bready with a bit of toffee. There is a hint of noble hops. Very pleasant, but a little too faint for the style. The taste is along the same lines. The mouthfeel is medium bodied and slightly undercarbonated. Overall, thisi s a very mediocre beer that is right on par with nearly everything else Lake Superior puts out. I will not drink this again.

A: Clear, deep burnt orange/bronze color with a nice khaki colored head. Good slick spots of lacing here and there.

S: Lightly toasted malt. Carmel malts, a little nutty.

T: More carmel malt and toasted malt. Some nuttiness as well. Some bread and slight sour notes near the end and a little bit of mild hop bitterness comes through at the finish. This tastes really fresh.

M: Medium body, very low carbonation makes for a slicker mouthfeel, but it feels kind of dead.

D: Pretty good drinkability. Its more flavorful than most O-fests. I wonder what the ABV is? Seems like it is in the mid 5% range.

A - Clear, burgundy color with a one-finger, khaki colored head of foam. Little to no lacing.

S - It smelled of caramel, toffee and some floral notes.

T - Sweet caramel maltiness with a touch of toffee and bread crust. Slight bitter hop bite.

M - It was crisp, sharp and smooth. A light to medium bodied lager.

O - This is a nice oktoberfest. I drank it a little out of season but it was still good.

A- Caramel colored, one finger head of fine textured white bubbles.
S- Smell is caramel, a bit earthy, with a nice caramelized nut aroma.
T- It's a nice nutty tasting beer. There is a good underpinning of caramel as well. It's tasty enough but it's pretty one-dimensional.
M- Low, smooth carbonation. Medium body, maybe a touch fuller.
O- A easy drinking enough beer but it's a bit too one-dimensional and doesn't have the depth an example like Paulaner does.

deep almost burnt amber color. An inch of white head, leaving a collar of retention.
Slick spotty legs of lace.
Aroma is fairly decent, and plenty of it. Large malt presence, some grains and a touch of roasted grain too, bordering chocolate. Small amount of caramel sweetness in the distance.
Taste is full of flavor as well, large amount of malt, sweet, toasted grain notes and a little rye on the finish. A bit sweet, but still very pleasant and full of flavor. Some hop bitters on the finish as well.

A great contender for the style.

12oz bottle with no date, poured into globe

look is a dark ruby, mostly filtered. small head that fades to a ring. smells like gingerbread. feel is great:malty smooth fullness. the taste is on the lighter side for the style: pulpy pumpkin, light allspice, caramel malts.

This Oktoberfest poured a golden/light copper with a thin white head that laced the glass nicely. The aroma is moderately grainy, slightly spicy, there is a hint of spicy hops and the beer exhibits that common Oktoberfest lager aroma. The flavor is moderately malty, rather smooth and medium-thin bodied. The hop bitterness is medium-low with a hint of hop flavor. The finish is slightly dry. Overall not a bad example of an Oktoberfest, but the flavor and aroma seemed a bit under powered and the beer was rather one-dimensional, not much to really hang your hat on.

Amber/orange colored....some toasted caramel on the nose...medium bodied for the style...toasted malt is in the forefront on the taste...that's good...what I don't care for is a slight sour/vinegar touch on the finish....it is subtle but out of place...

Overall this is OK....

Lake Superior's Oktoberfest is invitingly transparent, russet, and shows off autumnal orange highlights when backlit. The head is more beige than expected but is incredibly dense and velvety. A sticky network of lacing decorates the glass as I drink.

The aroma is that of pure, unadultered, crisp toasted grains with a backbone of that mouthwateringly sweet Munich malt. The slightly sweet maltiness adds a touch of caramel to the clean graininess and with deep pulls releases some floral undertones. I get floral notes from some of my favorite Oktoberfests out there. If it tastes as good as it smells I'll be in for a treat. Clean and to the point.

Sweet Munich malt gets things moving and follows through to the finish with the crisp, clean, lightly toasted graininess picking up mid-palate and pushing through the swallow. That floral quality lingers in the background. The flavor follows closely to what the aroma suggested. I'm digging this Oktoberfest, very clean and precise.

A body on the lighter side of moderate tops things off and the long finish is fairly dry which I think really helps the overall character of this beer. It would be beyond easy to put back a couple liters of this guy.

I have to admit, I'm pleasantly surprised at the very high quality of this Octoberfest. I haven't heard much about Lake Superior Brewing over the years but they nailed this particular style. It's unfortunate that this beer isn't available in my area because it's one of the better Oktoberfests I've yet to come across.

pours out a deep and darkish crimson colour with a thin fine head and bits of lace. sturdy malt aroma...chunks of ripe fruit with cocoa and caramel. taste follows suit with a depth of malt character showing off bready, doughy malts...hints of cocoa and toffee and an underlying spice that fits in well. really a lot of layered malt character. medium bodied with a suspect mouthfeel...has an adjunct feel to it although i cannot verify that. nice drinkability...tasty enough although there seems to be some holes here and there.

overall i'm glad i got to try this. although i have only one bottle it seems to me that there could be some tweaks to this to make it a more solid and well rounded, cohesive o-fest type of offering.

Clear copper. No visible carbonation. Bubbly light brown collar, but not much of a head. Lace is more than adequate though. There's really a nice toasted malt/vienna malt thing going on with the aroma. A little caramel maltiness noted on the nose as well. The flavor has a nice full, rounded maltiness to it. The toasted notes blend well with the sweet caramel notes. Some nuttiness as well to it and a bit of a hop dryness as well on the finish. I recently did a blind tasting of 12 Ofests (which included Spaten, Hacker Pschorr, Paulaner and other big guns) and this finished 3rd for me (behind Granite City's and Summit's). I guess that puts this one in some pretty good company. It's a nice ofest that I wouldn't mind having some more of.

Thanks big ol ZAP!!

Poured into a 12oz Tumbler Glass

Appearance - Dark Orange with a some red saturation. Pours a slightly orange 1 finger head. Leaves behind some decent lacing as well

Smell - Slight Spicy scent with hints of dry hops and yeasts. I also noticed a slight overlaying ginger and butter nut smell as well.

Taste - Has a very noticeable caramel and buttery flavor, especially in the back of the palette. It's definitely one of the more flavorful Oktoberfest beers I have tried. It finishes off with a slight bitter butter flavor to it, almost reminiscent of a Bitter Ale

Mouthfeel - Carbonation is light as well as the overall body. It's a pretty smooth beer to drink

Overall - Fairly good Oktoberfest beer. The flavor is probably what sets it apart the most from other Oktoberfest beers, which is certainly not a bad thing but it also doesn't feel as much like an Oktoberfest as it probably should. With that being said, it's still a good beer in it's own right
