Poured from a 12 oz. bottle into a tall pint glass.

Appearance: Pours a dark blackish brown with some hints of amber. Lots of bubbles and a huge four finger off white head which slowly fades into a thinner creamy layer. Leaves a lot of creamy lacing.

Smell: An earthy, roasty, and fairly juicy balanced mix of hops and dark malts. Earthy and floral hops with hints of grass and spicy pine resin. Subtle citrus hop hints of orange, lemon, and grapefruit. Dark roasted malts with good hints of chocolate, coffee, toast, caramel, biscuit, grains, and yeast. A pretty solid balanced aroma.

Taste: Like it smells, a sweet, earthy, and roasty balance of dark malt and hop esters. Upfront mix of earthy and floral hops with notes of wet grass and pine resin. Citrus hop esters of orange, grapefruit, and lemon. Sweet dark roasted malt with notes of dark chocolate, coffee, toasted bread, caramel, biscuit, grains, and yeast. Nice balance of bitterness and sweetness.

Mouthfeel: Medium bodied with a fairly high level of carbonation. Creamy, silky, smooth, and fairly drying on the finish.

Overall: A solid dark brew. Sort of like a hopped up cream stout. Nice balance.

I've never had a gushing bottle from a commercial brewery until I tried this beer. There were significant carbonation issues that I've only seen with homebrew. I tried a sip and it was like sucking on an Alka-Seltzer. Curious, I opened the entire six pack (over the course of a few days) and had the same issue with each bottle. Bummer of a beer!

Poured out a jet-black color with a large, light brown head of foam. It smelled of roasted malt, pine and toasted caramel. Nice rich chocolate taste with a strong roast flavor.

Poured from a 12oz. bottle.

A: Pours a very deep reddish brown that appears nearly black even when held to light. Head is one finger of creamy khaki color that dissipates throughout a couple minutes before settling to a bubbly ring that rests atop the brew, leaving behind some nice lacing as you drink.

S: Aromas of roasted malts, and earthy malts predominately. But if you dig deep enough you get notes of citrus, caramel, pine, chocolate, and some interesting fruitiness.

T: Sweet roasted malts, and earthy grassy hops up front, then you get some citrusy fruit flavors, caramel, and chocolate notes. Finishes bitter sweet with a nice amount of pine hop bitterness balanced out by a crisp lingering citrus taste. Nice take on a black IPA.

M: Medium bodied, with a moderately high amount of carbonation. Crisp and easy to drink but feels as though it is lacking something. I feel it takes something away from the overall palate as it seems a little light for its style.

O: I must admit the first time I tried this beer I thought it was terrible, I am not sure if I had a bad bottle or if my palate was off that day, but alas I am glad I decided to revisit this brew. This is a well balanced black IPA that is a little different then the ones I'm used. Overall this is a nice brew that I could enjoy again, and I would say it would be a good choice for anyone looking for something on the lighter end of the black IPA spectrum.
