American Brown Ale |  5.30% ABV

Availability: Year-round

Notes/Commercial Description:
It's chocolate brown in color with a creamy texture. A malty beer with just enough hop presence to keep it from being too sweet. The aroma mostly comes from the malt with a hint of spice added by the hops. Moose Drool is brewed with pale, caramel, chocolate, and whole black malts; and Kent Goldings, Liberty, and Willamette hops.

From BeerAdvocate Magazine Volume II, Issue III:

This beer has gained cult status over the years. Decent head retention, enough to get by. Very dark chestnut color with a glowing clarity when brought up to the light. Hint of plum and apple fruitiness in the nose with aromas of faint peppery, minty herbal hop and nutty breadiness. Sharp carbonation up front with a creamy, smooth mouthfeel and a moderate body. Brown bread, toasted husk and nutty throughout. Breadiness goes far and keeps the flavor going for a good while. Ghost bicarbonate flavor. Oily hop lends a substantial amount of flavor with a mild bitterness. Touch of apple skin, raisin, brown sugar and carob in the semi-dry finish.

A solid Brown Ale to be had here, very drinkable. Without a doubt it's a good pick when it comes to Brown Ales.

12 oz. brown long neck with no freshness date to be found.

Appearance: Tight sticky webby lacing on the glass, the head stays two fingers deep for a while. Dark mahogany hue lets some light through showing a reddish glow on the edges.

Smell: Clean and sweet steely and toasted malt aroma.

Taste & Mouthfeel: Very smooth and well textured with a moderate carbonation. At first there is a hit of toasted grain, then the chocolate tones creep in and lay a blanket of cocoa on the palate. Mildly astringent twang in the back, hops do a balancing act with the sweetness. Finishes a little dry.

Notes: A nice solid brown ale, very non-obtrusive just easy to drink. Went well with the mild cheddar I had with it.

Reviewed at Johnson's Campground, St Mary, MT. Full notes taken to my phone.

A- Brown beer poured from a 12oz bottle to a goblet at glacier camping. Small light nutty tan head forms to one finger with fair retention. Small bubbly ring leaves rare spots of lace.

S- Nutty and deeply toasted malt aromas lead off the nose of the beer which is overall influenced mostly from the grains. Toffee, butter, brown sugar and caramel. Yeast gives some dark dry fruit and bready hints.

T- Yeast picks up a bit here with the dry spicy dark fruits like fig and raisin and some apple esters giving more influence. Malts still the key with toasted, nutty, cereal grain, caramel and dark sugar sweets. Ever so slight hint of roast.

MF- Medium thick body, maybe a tad toward the light side with a foamy texture. High end carbonation with a slight bitter finish.

Brown ale that is towards the drinkable side and reminds me of English style Browns with the body and toffee nutty flavor.
