Notes/Commercial Description:
It's chocolate brown in color with a creamy texture. A malty beer with just enough hop presence to keep it from being too sweet. The aroma mostly comes from the malt with a hint of spice added by the hops. Moose Drool is brewed with pale, caramel, chocolate, and whole black malts; and Kent Goldings, Liberty, and Willamette hops.

Poured from a twelve ounce bottle purchased at the North Coast Co-op in Eureka, California. The head is frothy, tan in color, and rises a solid inch toward the rim of my Sierra Nevada Celebration Ale pint glass. A curdled collar of thin lace clings to the glass.

Smell:

Milk chocolate upfront, like opening a Hershey's bar arm's length away and catching a wiff, followed by a strong black coffee bite. Subtle, though. The volume is turned down here a little too far.

Taste:

A nice sweep of dark chocolate sweetness coated over some roasted coffee beans. But that sweep dies down rapidly, leaving a slack middle of faint -- even awkward -- hop notes on top of a now over-powering coffee kick, comes off almost like raw coffee grounds. The aftertaste is a surprise: a sharp hop pinch that lingers for a long time, narrow and, as I said, sharp, with a flat background of mild malt sweetness.

Mouthfeel:

Too airy -- has a "whipped topping" quality to it that doesn't do justice to some of the bold flavors here. Middling carbonation.

An interesting brown ale. Definitely drinkable, and enjoyable, but there are plenty of better American browns out there.

Poured from a 12 oz. bottle into a tulip.

Appearance: Moose Drool has a chestnut or walnut color with a ruby tint. A foamy tan cap sits on top, retaining fairly well. Some lace sticks to the glass and slowly slides down the sides.

Smell: More cocoa than I would normally expect from a brown ale, which is to say, there is some cocoa in the aroma. Lightly roasted malt, with lightly spiced and earthy hop presence to balance. Mild.

Taste: Roasted malt up front, with some sweet cocoa and hits of cinnamon and spice. Some spicy and earthy hops provide additional supporting flavor, but not much bitterness. The flavor is all right, it just does not really jump out at me.

Mouthfeel: Light to medium body, with an average amount of carbonation that is neither especially creamy nor crisp, but just sort of there.

Drinkability: The transition between flavors was fairly smooth, but I just was not blown away by the flavor overall. Too much cocoa I think.

i'm not always in the mood for brown ales, but when i am, moose drool is often where i go. nice sweet hazelnut nose, bit of vanilla in there too. taste is malty and nutty, slight bitterness comes at the end with some acidity at the finish. i like how this is not too sweet. it's dry and balanced.

Poured from a 12 oz bottle into a pint glass, coded bottle date. This pour a clear dark brown with a large tan head which has okay retention and doesn't leave a lacing. The smells are of a little nutty toffee caramel. The feel is medium to light. The taste is okay, a little caramel and toffee and perhaps coffee, but something is missing.

Poured from a bottle into a pint glass. Dark brown/amber, held to the light you can barely see through it...that is when you can really see the red in it. Very little head, very little lacing.

Toasted nuts and chocolate on the nose. Not much else, maybe some slightly sweet caramel?

Light watery on the mouth feel. Plenty of carbonation. Again toasted nuts, dark bitter chocolate on the front but ending with a malty, hoppy punch. Nothing heavy, nice light and easy to drink. As I sit and write this review a alcohol warmth has built up in my throat, pleasantly warm but nothing to worry about...actually I'm surprised it's there considering this is a 5.3?

Pretty good brown ale, the chocolate and nuts keep coming back, sweet and a hop bitter finish. Overall a little watery but considering this could be a session beer, that's OK. Good not great...I'll drink again...hopefully someone else will be buying.

A - Clear dark amber, small white head, no lace.

S - Roasty malt is the biggest smell I get from this one.

T - Standard brown ale... Malty, niche back hops.

M - Light to medium, fair carb, good balance.

D - Brown ales are not my favorite, but this one is pretty well made.

On draft at Sanford's Pub and Grub in Cheyenne, WY.

The beer is dark chestnut with a thin beige collar. Malty aroma with notes of dark fruit, brown bread. Smooth and pretty light bodied on the palate. A mild sweetness throughout, finishing with a delicate hop note. Pretty good.

12 oz. brown long neck with no freshness date to be found.

Appearance: Tight sticky webby lacing on the glass, the head stays two fingers deep for a while. Dark mahogany hue lets some light through showing a reddish glow on the edges.

Smell: Clean and sweet steely and toasted malt aroma.

Taste & Mouthfeel: Very smooth and well textured with a moderate carbonation. At first there is a hit of toasted grain, then the chocolate tones creep in and lay a blanket of cocoa on the palate. Mildly astringent twang in the back, hops do a balancing act with the sweetness. Finishes a little dry.

Notes: A nice solid brown ale, very non-obtrusive just easy to drink. Went well with the mild cheddar I had with it.
