Scape Goat is our award-winning Pale Ale. It is a very smooth brew, refreshing and well-balanced. Scape Goat took home the Gold Medal from the North American Brewers' Association competitions as the best English-style pale ale brewed west of the Mississippi, but only because it is the best. Scape Goat is brewed with pale, crystal malts, and Kent Goldings and Crystal hops.

From BeerAdvocate Magazine Volume II, Issue III:

Standard two fingers of head with some retention as the lacing drops a couple of rings on the inside of the glass. Perfect clarity with a bright pale amber color. Mildly fruitiness with a peppery herbal hop nose, hint of biscuity malt in the aroma as well. Enough crispness to carry the moderate body along. Solid ping of hop bitterness is a flash on the palate, this lets both the oily hop flavor and bready malt overtones mingle to come through with suggestions of wildflowers and tree bark, biscuity grain and mild animal feed respectively. Slightly fruity but pretty clean throughout. Leans a little to the sweet side in the finish with lingering bread and oily hop.

A standup English Pale Ale as it hits its target, a quaffer (session beer) as well.

12 oz. brown long neck with no freshness date to be found.

Appearance: Appealing bubbly white lace on top of the brassy amber coloured brew. Clarity is fine even with the fine sediment that made its way into the glass.

Smell: Big floral citric hop with a soft spiciness in the back. Some fruitiness, nutty yeast and malt sweetness make it to the nose as well.

Taste & Mouthfeel: Level crisp moderate body that shows some smoothness, a bit dry in the mouth and that make the heavy hand of hops more pronounced. Waves of citrus rind and a soft floral-like oil show that a substantial amount of flavouring hops was used. Maltiness just stands there with a lightly toasted flavour, yeast jumps in at the same time with a nutty note. Clean finish with a drying graininess and lingering hop flavour.

Notes: This is your standard American brewed pale ale, light on the malt with an obvious citric hop. One thing going for this beer is that the brewers did a good job at keeping it balanced and making it quite drinkable.

Poured from bottle into a pint glass

Appearance – The beer pours a clear golden color with a one finger head of fizzy white foam. The head fades super-fast leaving only a trace bit of fizzy lace on the sides of the glass.

Smell – The aroma of the beer is very light overall with just a light level of caramel sweetness and a little bit of a bready and grainy smell. Along with these is a very light grassy smells as well.

Taste – The taste begins with a rather crisp and bready flavor with a good level of graininess right upfront. Along with these flavors are some flavors of a very light caramel and light fruit flavor of apricot and peach. The fruit flavors grow in flavor as the taste advances sweetening the brew as the taste moves on. Along with the sweeter fruit flavors some light grassy tastes to leave a clean and moderately crisp flavor to linger on the tongue.

Mouthfeel – The body of the beer is on the thinner side with a carbonation level that is on the average side. A slightly higher carbonation level may have been slightly better for creating a greater level of crispness, but even with that side the feel was rather nice for the style and still made for a rather refreshing brew.

Overall – A very easy drinking pale ale, a good one to sip leisurely.

A: Clear body with a decent white head.

S: Clear pils malts, crisp grain and a little bit of bready sweetness; hops are underlying and a bit pungent, definitely grassy and possibly earthy. Hint of toast.

T: Hint of lemon peel, grassy and earthy again. Grain, maybe faint caramel? Possible toasted malt as well; lower sweetness and lower bitterness levels.

MF: Lighter bodied, moderately bitter.

O: OK. This longneck was from a friends variety pack, and I'm not sure how long those packs sit around? Tastes...not so fresh? This is in the English vein, but you expect more fruity yeast characters, a stronger malt base, and more appropriate hop levels. Meh.

First off, I would NOT call this an English style pale ale. The label has changed, and I get the feeling that this used to be a very different tasting beer.

A: Orangish, translucent golden with a white head.

S: Orange, tangerine, mango in a deliciously citric nose.

T: Not as much mango in the taste, but orange and tangerine are still present with some pine. It's delicious!

M: Medium-light bodied and smoothish.

O: This is a deliciously hoppy pale ale with nice orangey aromas and flavors. Definitely recommended.
