Found a bottle of this in spring of this year at By the Bottle in Vancouver, WA. The colour of this beer was a very cloudy amber with absolutely no head. The aroma was thick with burnt cocoanut, vanilla, booze and turbinado. On the palate, there was plenty of sweetness, oak, booze, toasted cocoanut, English toffee, brown sugar sirup and Caramello. Very nice stuff!

Had this unusual, odd beer at the recent HardLiver festival at Brouwer's (naturally).

My notes right off the bat describe this as just wild stuff. The beer pours a dark tawny tan color with fabulous head retention and lacing. I can really smell the wood in this beer, and the barrel aging aromas completely dominate the nose. The same is true on the palate, and frankly I just thought it too much of a good thing. The beer is very sweet and boozy, with really too much wood flavor IMO. Along with the noticeable alcohol, there is also a sweet malt and butter flavor. This beer really wore me out after a while and ultimately I just couldn't finish it. An interesting beer, but out of balanced with excessive wood flavor. Not my favorite of the festival.

Looks like a barleywine. Garnet in color filtered with a small yellow head that fades quickly into a bubbly top.

Fabulous nose. Date, toffee, caramel, fig bourbon, toasty vanilla oak, clean and malty with a hint of earth.

This a damn fine. Tastes just like the aroma. Dates and fig really dominate with a nutty character on the long finish. Smooth wood tannins with a bit of hoppiness. Thick and slightly sweet toffee and caramel. Good amount of aclcohol in the mouth and chest. Nice.

Big Sky Old Blue Hair Burbon Aged 2006

On tap at Brouwers in Seattle, Washington. Appeared Ruby amber with a crisp and clean mouthfeel and not bogged down by the syrupy thickness of some barleywines. The aroma was incredibly complex and centered on pickled pepperoncini and okra, oaked burbon, alcohol, hints black pepper, and notes of sweetness in the form of red bell pepper. I've never smelled anything quite like this. The taste was about as close to the smell as I've ever had. Flavors of oaked burbon hit up front, intermingling with woody, spicy hops, black pepper, and pickled peppers. One of the most interesting and fun to drink barleywines I've ever tasted.

750 ml unlabeled bottle brought to the SeaO'Floydster tasting by myself, received in a trade about a year ago, earlier vintage than 2006, poured into my Rader snifter

A-Muddy brown, 3/4 inch light tan bubbly head, not much retention, no lace
S-Brown sugar, bourbon, vanilla, oak, dark berries, milk chocolat, and booze
T-Starts off with sweet fruit, sugary malts in the middle, finish is slightly hot with bourbon, gets sweeter as time goes by and the caramel comes out a lot more by the end, not as much of a whiskey component than expected
M-Sweet, warm, slightly chewy, and sometimes dry mouthfeel, medium bodied, light carbonation, taste could have lingered longer
D-Could not drink too much of this, too sweet and heavy, not balanced and sugar takes over after a while, alcohol is not hidden well but I still wish more bourbon was in the flavor

Interesting brew from Big Sky and something different than Moose Drowl for once, would have liked to see some power behind this one but the age might have something to do with that, still not a bad brew and I would revisit, look forward to opening my 2008 bottle that I recently purchased from Liquid Solutions, recommended

Picked up this bottle, No 1610 of 1800, from Papago Brewing
Poured a deep amber color with a small dirty white head. Average look and pour. Nose is faint but I did find some dried fruits, brown sugar, oak, bourbon and caramel.Taste is Dried fruits, vanilla, oak, bourbon, dried fruits, brown sugar. There was an off, astringent like taste, maybe ven like alumnum foil. ABV is very tolerable keeping iot very drinkable and not masking the flavors. Mouthfeel is nice creamy, coating and sugary. Very nice. At $18 a bottle you can keep it.

Thanks to Floydster for bringing this rarity to the SeaofFloydster Tasting on March 28th.

Poured a reddish color with little to no head.

The aroma consisted of sweet dark fruits upfront and notes of maple, caramel malts, a bit of cherry syrup in the background and some fruitiness from the yeast.

Sweet cherry taste initially with sweet multi-grain bread, oak, and vanilla. Maybe a bit too sweet and could use a little more balance. Still tasty but compared to the other barrel aged barleywines I had this same day it had some tough competition. The feel was also a bit syrupy with very little carbonation.

Not a bad beer at all, it just didn't have enough to jump out and grab my attention like the other barleywines I had earlier.
