750 mL bottle poured into a snifter. Reviewed from notes.

Appearance - Foamy as hell. Murky red. Looks light and overcarbonated.

Smell - Light malt notes. A ton of bourbon and a little oak.

Taste - Oaky and astringent. Overcarbonated. Caramel comes through more here as the bourbon is lighter. Nothing special in the flavor. Maybe a little fruity.

Mouthfeel - Way overcarbonated. Astringent and dry. Kinda ruins the experience.

Overall - The flavors are ok, but it's mouthfeel is a tremendous let down. Thin, kinda they way I felt about Ivan the Terrible.

Bottle 1497/1800. Dark caramel brown with apple red and Sunkist accents when the glass is backlit with the rising October sun. The khaki colored crown is more a loose collection of unsticky bubbles than a creamy slice of foam, which is a fairly common occurence when it comes to higher-ABV, barrel-aged beer. In all fairness, the head becomes melty-creamy in the end and stays at the thick disk stage for a prolonged period of time.

The nose is classic caramel malt barleywine (pale, crystal, and chocolate), with wonderful whiskey notes from the American oak bourbon barrels. More hoppiness would be nice, but this Limited Edition ale has been chilling out my cellar for the past year or so. Maybe the hops will make an appearance on the palate.

Barrel Aged Olde Bluehair Barley Wine tastes exactly like it smells... which is a very good thing. It's on the gentle side for the style, thanks to the original 75 IBUs being countered by mucho malt, and the ABV being 8.75% rather than double digits. That doesn't mean that this little old lady lacks punch. On the contrary.

Pale malt offsets chocolate malt, and caramel-crystal emerges as the winner. Having said that, pleasant hints of cocoa nibness are easily identified, more so than in most American barleywines. There's a ton of medium-dark fruitiness and the bourbon influence is right on the money. Caramelized sugar, oak and vanilla bean tantalize the buds with each sip. Thankfully, the beer isn't the least bit boozy.

The next highest taste score is tempting, but Bluehair doesn't have that extra gear, that extra certain something to get it over the hump. No qualms, though, about bumping the drinkability score. This stuff is disappearing more quickly than is advisable if I want to remain coherent enough to finish this review and still make sense.

With respect to mouthfeel, think aged English barleywine or old ale. In other words, it isn't thick and chewy and it isn't as creamily carbonated as your typical Belgian ale. No matter, because the beer's size and laid back bubbles work fine in combination, which increases (ease of) drinkability even more.

In my humble opinion, Big Sky is one of America's most underappreciated breweries. They have gotten more of my money (thanks to their outstanding IPA) than anyone else in this country over the past several years. Barrel Aged Olde Bluehair Barley Wine may not be transcent beer, but it's a delicous and drinkable effort that is well worth the purchase price.

10.5% ABV.
Poured a fizzy brass tinged medium brown,again a rather fizzy one finger off white head atop.Toasty oak and vanilla aromas with a bit of caramel,mainly all barrel aged aromas here,flavors are toasty with heavy vanilla and caramel,just a slight drying earthiness in the finish.As the beer warmed more malt nuances came into play like dark fruit and some cakiness.Its a bit sharp in the mouth but not to annoying,its pretty good but a little one dimensional with the barrel aging really taking over the beer.I dont think its worth the big price paid.

A- Deep amber with a lot of rushing bubbles and a huge white head.

S- Vanilla, bourbon, fruity hops.

T- Sweet oak character balanced by subtle, fruity hops.

M- Soft, but with a bit too much carbonation.

D- Not as good as the Schlafly Oak Aged BW but well worth drinking, especially if you can find it.

Thanks to someone for sharing this at the May Freetail bottle release. This is a beer I have been looking forward to trying, hopefully it does not disappoint.

The beer pours a copper color with a white head. The aroma is what I expected. I get a ton of bourbon notes as well as some maple and toffee. The alcohol is also noticeable.

The flavor is similar. I get a lot of toffee and caramel malts along with some bourbon whiskey, vanilla and maple notes. There is also a nice oaked quality to the flavor which melds well with everything else that is going on.

Medium to thick, slightly syrupy mouthfeel and low carbonation. A very nice barrel-aged beer.

A brownish liquid comes out without much in the way of head. Some bubbles, but didn't amount to much. Aroma was boozy at first, but settled into an appreciable mix of toffee, vanilla, wood and bourbon.

Taste, still boozy, but with each sip, got better and better. Carbonation was better than expected after the not sexy pour. Nice bourbon and vanilla integration, this beer just kept getting better. Waves of caramel complimenting the toffee. By the end of it, you're wondering where the initial notes of alcohol went. Its like they fly out the bottle like the ghosts on Indiana Jones Raiders of the Lost Ark after the first sip and whiff. Sweetness level is just where it should be.

Pretty much a must try for any barleywine fan. Decently priced, picked mine up for $13 I believe in AZ, saw it for the price in Bend, OR as well.

Bottle purchased at Papago Brewing in Scottsdale, AZ - somewhere in the 1600's.

Pours a cloudy orange-brown color with a thin off-white head that quickly dissipates into a wispy layer on top leaving no lacing.

Smells of sweet caramel malts with hints of vanilla and bourbon. As the beer warms some booze-soaked fruit aromas waft out every now and then.

Tastes similar to how it smells. Solid caramel malt flavors kick things off, followed shortly by light bourbon flavors. The fruits don't have as much presence as in the aroma, though they're still there. Ending is mildly bitter.

Mouthfeel is good. It has a very nice thickness with mild carbonation that makes it go down smoothly.

Drinkability is good. I thought this was a pretty well-balanced barleywine and could have polished off the bomber without a problem.

Overall this is a solid barrel-aged barleywine, though it's a bit short of spectacular. Still, it's worth a shot.

750ml caged and corked bottle, 10.2% ABV. 2014 is already getting long in the tooth, so I guess it's OK to pop this 2013 vintage edition of Olde Bluehair.

This beer pours a slightly hazy, medium copper amber colour, with a teeming, barely contained tower of puffy, thinly foamy, and bubbly tan head, which leaves some patchy and sudsy layered cloud formation lace around the glass as it lazily recedes. Not your daddy's barleywine, so far.

It smells of acrid Bourbon barrels - more musty staves and over-proof booze than caramel, vanilla, or spice - reduced brown sugar, edgy molasses, black pepper, gritty pale and toffee-accent malt, dead yeast, wet leather, chewing tobacco, gritty earthy hops, and a swirling, barely restrained booziness. The taste is a lot more rounded, and yet plain - understated grainy caramel malt, still rather woody barrel essences - raw wood (natch), metallic vanilla, muted spice - powdered chalk, weird, fairly unattractive phenols, and herbal, weedy hops - the kind that seem beholden to the not so well masked alcohol.

The bubbles are pretty heady and pervasive throughout in their overwrought frothiness, the body a bit on the lee side of actual medium weight, and smooth, sure, but assailed from unseen vectors on all sides. It finishes mostly dry, the woodiness finally laying waste and claim to victory, all others merely book-ended by the lingering, as ever was, alcohol.

Ok, so, what we have here, is a seemingly and strangely bottle-reconditioned (the froth, she don't lie) barleywine, of English-style extraction (the hops apparently just incapable of speaking for themselves), with some of the titular old-lady's, um, blue-haired musty crustiness resplendent everywhere. Nah, not for me, not for me at all.

Burnt orange to carmine gradient with a lasting beige collar and a faint surface slick. Faint sandy lacing, no legs.

Leather, tobacco, prunes, pine, peach pits, and stewed fruit in the nose. Lightly hoppy with a hint of burnt sugar.

White pepper, evergreen, spearmint, alfalfa, and moderate bitterness accompanied by a milky malt note. Complexity suddently vanishes in the woody dry finish, drawing you back immediately to see if the flavor profile was all an illusion...

Tinkgly, well carbonated (almost too much so) and not-quite-slick.

Well balanced, though malt-heads and hop-heads alike may find something missing if they are glass-half-empty types.

Bottle 285 of 1800 - vintage year unknown

Olde Bluehair pours a nice copper color. It has a distinct crimson look when held to light. Not bad at all. Carbonation looks very active. A gentle pour yielded a light tan head that stands easily over three fingers tall. It's very slow to dissipate. Lacing is sticky and moderate in volume.

The nose is good. It's sweet and full of caramel up front. Bourbon is appreciated, but it's a rather light and restrained scent. It works. There are some fruity notes of apple, apricot, and pear. There are no dark fruits in the house (as far as I can smell). Secondary notes of oak and vanilla are noted, and add nice depth. Alcohol is blended surprisingly well. The label indicates the abv in this vintage is 8.75%.

The flavor is very consistent with the nose. It's sweet and fruity initially. Caramel malts give it a nice base and blend well with the apple, pear, and apricot flavors. I'm not getting any dark fruit here, but the golden variety works nicely. Barrel aging imparted a nice, subtle bourbon flavor that complements the Barleywine flavors very well. Oak and vanilla are definitely secondary, but are flavorful. Alcohol has integrated nicely over time. It's not very noticeable in flavor. Finishes sweet and fruity with a touch of bourbon.

Olde Bluehair has a medium body. Carbonation is active and a little buzzy. It's not quite smooth, but it's not bad either. Fewer bubbles might be the ticket. Drinkability is good. I'm enjoying this one. It doesn't taste or feel like a huge, barrel-aged Barleywine and goes down rather easily.

This is my first experience with Big Sky Brewing Company, and it's been a good one. Olde Bluehair is a pretty impressive barrel-aged Barleywine. The flavor delivers and the subtle bourbon presence works extremely well. A little less carbonation would improve things a little. Maybe a bit of hops would too. I'm curious as to whether they're present in a fresh bottle. Perhaps another day. Easily recommended.

Thanks to sweemzander for opening this one.

(A) Pours a brownish color with a slight bit of cloudiness. Ruby hues when held to the light. The barrel aging definitely took some effect on the coloration of this beer. About a half inch head on this beast.

(S) There area a lot of fruits and sweeter aromas. Fig and dark sugar, but then there is some lighter roasted malt present. As it opens there is a note of licorice.

(T) Taste is a lot like the nose. There is fig and a good amount of dark dried fruits. The barrel wood gives a great characteristic to this beer. Doesn't really hit like a barleywine usually wood and I think it's because the woods toned it down a bit. Other residual sugars linger as well as the hint of a licorice taste.

(M) Solid medium body, slightly grainy, and ends dry.

(O) This was a different one. I really liked it, but it caught me off guard not tasting as I would expect a baleywine to taste. The barrel did wonders for the flavor. It was a solid beer and I look forward to revisiting this one in the future.

This was a lucky pick up at Goebbels in Wichita.

Bottle #1319 of 3000 opens with a major pop! Pours caramel with a pinky of khaki lacing. Nice viscious look to this, good head retention & some lacing

S: Toffee, dark fruit & slight boozeyness

T: Rich dark fruit, Bourbon, leafy hops, a touch boozey vanilla. Honey, figgyness, a bit of smokey toffee as this warms, along with some booze-soaked cherries. Finishes oaky dry with nice Bourbon notes, figs& sweet toffee. Slight deduction for lack of American BW hop profile, would've maxed this out as an English BW. Wish I had some more bottles...

MF: Chewy, smooth carbonation, great balance, nice warming sensation

750 ml foil topped bottle. # 1349/1800. Thanks goes to beerbeagle for hooking me up with this in the Secret Bunny '08 BIF. Split this one with some fellow BA members. Poured into a snifter.

Pours a brilliant clear ruby red, with a thin foamy off-white head. This bunches around the edges with a thin wispy covering in the middle. Flare-up is very solid, leaving a rich looking latticework of lace back. Bourbon dominates the aroma, with some backing notes of woody oak and vanilla. Floral hops glide underneath, as does caramel, bread, citrus, and a maybe a touch of dark fruits in the back as well.

The taste is once again straight up Bourbon, that is well integrated with notes of citrus, vanilla, coconut, brown sugar, caramel, and dough standing out most to me. Bourbon and alcohol mix with hops and roast to end the profile with a warm and bitter feel that lingers. The mouthfeel is big feeling, with a full bodied and creamier feel. There is also a more tangible vicous layer that runs underneath, that carries a lot of the alcohol and warmth through the profile. A definite alcohol sting is present as well but it seems to come more from the Bourbon character then it does the ABV.

A pleasant suprise for sure, I liked the integration between the barrel notes and regular Barleywine flavors in this. While still a bit warm and a steady sipper, I'd love to see how this one would mellow and age over a couple of years.

Big thanks goes out to my boy Lunch for sending me this one in a past trade! Shared this one with a huge number of BAs during the ORF '11 release. 2010 Vintage! Bottle #1827 of 3000! Served from bottle into a sampler snifter. Poured red-orange with a half finger off-white head that subsided to a minimal amount quickly. Maintained nice lacing throughout the glass. The aroma was comprised of sweet malt, caramel, and wood. The flavor was of sweet malt, caramel, wood, and sweet alcohol. It had a medium feel on the palate with mild carbonation. Overall this was a decent brew. The barrel aging on this brew really mellowed out a lot of the flavors that are typical in a big ABV Barleywine. This fact made this one really drinkable for all who had the chance to try it. The aroma was pretty good as well, but nothing awe-inspiring by any means. Definitely worth trying if you get the opportunity.

S: Slight bourbon and oak, caramel and toffee sweetness

L: Cloudy, brown, big light tan head with great retention and lacing.

T: Rich maltiness up front with a sweet bourbon backbone. Medium herbal bitterness with some hints of dark fruits. Some caramel as well, but not too sweet. Finishes semi-dry with some earthiness and slight alcohol.

M: Medium high carbonation, medium light bodied.

Not bad, nice blend of bourbon and malt. Don't know why the wanted the carbonation to be so high. Really detracts from the flavor, IMO.

750ml bottle #1183/1800, poured into a couple large snifters.

A- Starts with a big head as far as BW's go, dies down to a thin ring. Reddish brown color, not much for lacing.

S- Caramel, brown sugar, raisins, alcohol and a very tiny amount of bourbon. All the smells are very faint though, actually not much smell at all.

T- Hmmm.. I may be tasting everything I smelled. But its hard to tell because the flavor is just as muted as the smell.

M- Light body, low carbonation and some warmth.

D- Goes down easy, very unoffensive and well-balanced.

A little dissapointing overall but definatley not bad. Just really plain and forgetable.

drank from a chilled goblet rogue barley wine glass.

sound: the fun pop of a cork that we so rarely hear as beer drinkers

sight: this beer has a cloudy brownish red look with an off white head. other reviewers complained of an abundance of head which i didnt experience, maybe because of the specialized glass? beautiful cascade lacing on my glass

mouth feel: light feel, not thick at all, if anything, a little too thin.

smell: bourbon with a hint of something i couldnt detect, but it was magical.

taste: this tastes, to me, like what a barley wine should taste like. i tasted vanilla and oak along with the brisk crisp flavor or fruit.

review: this barley wine is pretty legit. as with most barley wines, by the time i get thru half the bottle i've got angels dancing behind my eyeballs, which is very pleasing. this beer, as with most good beers, reminds me of times in my past which were fun and memorable. if anyone is on the fence about trying it, i would say go for it, you;ve got nothing to lose. if they have more at total wine, i will probably buy teo bottles. one to drink, and one to stick way back in the back of the pantry for about a year to see how it goes later on. enjoy!

2011 Vintage. Bottle #1759/3000.
Poured in to snifter.

A - Very dark copper, almost opaque with just a slight ruby glow along the bottom of the glass. A huge amount of light, fluffy dirty-white head formed.

S - Sweet caramel, toffee and raisin aromas are in a great balance with oak, bourbon, vanilla and a touch of caramel form the barrel aging.

T - Barrel flavours come to the forefront in the palate with oak, bourbon and vanilla flavours present. The base beer provides great balance to the barrel flavours, adding dark caramel, raisin, toffee and plum flavours.

M - Medium body, almost full body. Moderate carbonation. A little over-carbonated, which likely detracts from the mouth feel.

I decided to add this one to the database as a new beer in hopes that it will emerge as the single source for reviews of Olde Bluehair as opposed to having a bunch of different vintages under the same brewery.

750 green Champagne style bottle ... Picked up today at the Boise COOP for $12.49... No vintage year (I assume '08) given, but the bottle number is #793 of 1800. Label says it is aged for a minimum of 3 months in American Oak Bourbon Barrels. Front Label has an old grandma hoisting a tulip of beer while standing behind a walker.. 3 barrels are in the background.

Poured into my New Belgium snifter.... 3 finger head rises pretty quickly atop a crystal clear deeep ruby brew.. the head took probably 15 minutes to die back.. leaves nice lace with every sip.

The aroma is pretty hoppy.. but also fruity with emphasis on grassy/spicy hoppiness and a drying woody element...

The flavor is really pretty good.. alot of fruits.. apricot and strawberries immediately come to mind.. caramel and hints of bourbon that come across more as vanilla.. this has quite a bit of "wood" flavor as opposed to actual bourbon... sorta fruity on the finish with a little bit of EtOH.

The body is on the lighter side for the style.. carbonation is on the higher side.. but it is a small bubble kind that really doesn't distract too much.

Good beer that I can see getting a whole lot better with some age.. seems slightly rough around the edges, but not bad at all.. in fact it is very nice and very drinkable right now.

2012 vintage:

Tobacco brown body capped with a frothy finger of sticky lace. Plenty of alcohol is apparent in the appearance.

Semisweet toffee and caramel dominate the nose. Vanilla and oak suggest some kind of bourbon characteristic. The alcohol is apparent but appropriate. Not too hot but also not too tame. Some mushy cherry or cranberry surfaces as the beer warms.

Vanilla, mellow bourbon, tobacco leaf, papery dessert sweetness. It's a bit hollow on the palate but it goes down smooth. The beer warms and evolves in a big way - cherry cobbler, root beer float, red wine... really interesting.

Pours a slightly murky red brown amber. Nice thick, long lasting off-white head with lacing. Nice presentation. Sweet malt, light fruit and oak aroma. Smells good. Sweet malt, dark and light fruit, bourbon and oak. Finishes sweet and oaky. Creamy body. An excellent barley wine.

brown in color with a light tan head on top that hung around for a good few minutes before settling down into a thin layer on top. One of the best aromas I have ever come across. Rich bourbon notes just rippling across the nose. Lots of toffee and vanilla, light touchs of oak and a piney hop presence as well. So immacualtly complex. Nothing subtle about this beast at all. Rich toffee and oak flavors are all over the place. Huge hop notes coming through with a nice alcohol hotness that is really well placed. A very tight flavor here with a long lingering vanilla flavor that lasted long after my last sip.

A: poured into a snifter to a deep brown that shows a red hue when held up to the light with a three finger off white head that is slow to fade.
S: smells of bourbon, caramel, vanilla, and a faint aroma of bitter hops
T: I shook a ton of carbonation out of this beer to get it drinking right so the flavors are bourbon, caramel, vanilla, and faint hop oils in the background, some oaky tannins, and the swallow brings more bourbon and caramel with a bit of wood
M: smooth and silky on the mouth with light but adequate carbonation after shaking and there is some alcohol heat on the finish
O: Overall, not bad but compared to beers like Sucaba it leaves a lot to be desired. It has good flavors and complexity but the flavors are not very well rounded and there is a bit too much alcohol heat for the ABV. It could be hidden better.

Bottle 1575/1800, 750ml with golden foil, picked up in Spokane and brought to Rob's great barleywine tasting!

Pours a dark ruby, lots of sediment in the glass on the first pour (might have gotten a little shaken up on the way over that night), a few big bubbles around the collar but not much carbonation.

Nose is light caramel malts, hints of vanilla and wood, pretty light and smooth.

This is a well balanced, more-ish barleywine. Nice woodiness and vanilla from the barrels, very faint hints of bourbon, still a faint hop bite in the finish, raisins, plums, candied sugar, caramel, light alcohol burn in the finish as well. The only downfall on this one is the body which is a little light, almost watery, for a barleywine. Makes it more drinkable perhaps but you might want a little more bulk to brink out some of the flavors. As is, pretty drinkable - don't worry about opening the bottle by yourself!
