Pours a light honey with noticeable lacing from a 2-finger thick cream head. Smells of fruit and wheat. Light honey also on the nose. Definitely a strong body of wheat with some fruit notes and a more bitter finish. Also, some hops are detected but mostly it's the tart body. The mouthfeel is light and bubbly. Overall a good Saison and something i could drink again, though i doubt that they will brew it again.

12 oz. bottle poured into a NB snifter.

A - Beer pours a light, clean golden, creating a big three-finger head of eggshell white fluffiness that takes its time to dissipate. Held to a full-spectrum light, the beer is a rich golden-yellow and cloudy, with a thick column of bubbles flowing up the middle. Wide, delicate broken lace around the sides.

S - Esters of lighter fruit, like ripe pear and cantaloupe, mix with bubblegum. Yeasty, light grain breadiness sits underneath. There's a very subtle spiciness that has a clearing effect on the nose, so the esters are favored along with notes of golden wheat and wild grasses. Nose is rather soft.

T - Light whole grain bread with a touch of dark honey. Some yeastiness mixed in, with hints of banana taffy in the background. A touch of white pepper shows up in the profile in the last half of the glass. Light floral hops appear in the finish for balance.

M - Fizzy and crisp. Nice, tight carbonation that's moderate and refreshing. Light-moderate body that's integrated. Short finish that's clean with just faint echos of the taste profile lingering.

O - A refreshing, enjoyable beer with a relatively straightforward construction. A touch sugar-forward, but light throughout, there are just enough bittering hops to provide good balance and a clean finish, making this a good summertime option.

Serving glass: Poured from bottle into Imperial Pint.

Appearance: Hazy honey with thick, bubbly white head.

Smell: Earthy aroma, with dried out banana, clove, citrus and white pepper.

Taste: Very similar to the aroma, with the same mix of flavors. Pretty tasty, but the finish is sharp in an odd way.

Feel: Light body, moderately high carbonation, dry finish.

Overall: Much better than the average in my opinion. It seems that the lower abv Saisons usually get lower scores.

Heavy carbonation off of the pour. Eggshell white foam. Light golden in color and it you get plenty of light coming through. I get some of the Saison yeast in the aroma, but it is quickly followed by a bit of corn. Adjuncts in a Saison = not cool. Mouthfeel is light and smooth. I don't get the trademark slickness of the Saison yeast. I actually get almost a faint bit of a flavor that is similar to coriander and it is pretty strong.

Picked up as part of a mixed sixer

Pours an effervescent straw color with 2 fingers of pearl white head. Stellar lacing & good head retention

S: Pears, apple blossoms & a bit of perfumy hops

T: Follows the nose, mushroom/barnyard dirt, dryness & a bit of lemon. More dryness, apple peels & pears as this warms. Finishes fruitty, dry, crisp with slight puckery notes

MF: Medium body with noticable carbonation

Not bad, a touch too clean & refined for the style. I expected more from these guys

Poured into a Perfect Pint.

A=Golden Apricot, with typical murkiness; very frothy head.

S=Hint of apricot and cream.

T=Initially, it was very harsh and over the top...taste and drinkability improved as it warmed up...apricot and cream, but also a harshness. Alcohol is evident.

M=Oily/slick feel...not a session beer and a bit hard to drink.

O=I don't particularly care for the style, but this is a decent representation...still, nothing spectacular; worth trying...I received as a gift and wouldn't buy.

Pours a hazy straw color with a pillowy white head that leaves big chunks of lacing.

Smells of citrus peel and grainy sweetness with a little spice.

Tastes of the grains first with a bit of citrus and spice over top. Leads off with grainy sweetness and a bit of bread to it. Citrus hops come through as well as some earthy spiciness. A touch of clove and pepper comes in the end with a dry finish.

Mouthfeel is medium with a smooth amount of carbonation.

Overall, this is decent, but I probably won't pick up any more.

$7.20 for a 6'er of this at WinCo of all places... Great deal! Pours into my HotD goblet with a 2 finger white head.. nice retention, but only splotchy lacing... the brew is hazed straw golden.

The aromas are only okay in the traditional saison realm.. grainy/wheat malt presence.. I guess some minor peppery phenols, but no real fruity esters.. seems too malt dominant for a "saison". Could use any sort of Belgian esters.

Very grainy on the palate.. not as dry on the palate as expected for the style.. light yeasty peppery quality.. perhaps some minor clove and even some bandaid. Wheat malt lays down a minor (very minor) tartness, but there is no yeasty sour notes to speak of.

Body is thick for a saison.. the residual malts left on the palate accentuate this... and the carbonation isn't really that good either.

Despite all my above negatives, I see what the good folks at Big Sky were trying to accomplish and I would suggest a very different yeast.

But for what this is, it is very, very refreshing and unlike anything the other breweries have in the cooler right now.... I will certainly buy it again... This should have been released in late spring.. Late night fire-pit parties, afternoon yard-work, and camping/fishing/hot-springing with an interesting/individual brew.

Decent... I see the bones; but this should have been more adventurous and it would have been great (especially in a 6-pack).

Poured into a Gulden Draak tulip. Pours a medium honey amber with a finger of fine white head with great retention and lacing. Aroma of sweet malt, phenolic spiciness, wheat and a hint of sulfur. Flavor is wheat, Belgian spicing, sweet bready malt, finishing drier with a lingering neutral hop and spice bitterness. Light bodied with a pleasant mouthfeel from active carbonation. Sweeter and less complex than most saisons, but a pleasant, easy to drink ale with good saison characteristics. I enjoyed this domestic take on the style.

I picked up a bottle of Big Sky's Brush Tail Farmhouse Saison last week for $1.69 at The Lager Mill. It's a nice warm spring night in Mid-Michigan and a Farmhouse Saison sounds pretty good right now, so let's see how it goes. No visible bottling date, but it just showed up so it has to be fairly fresh. Poured from a brown 12oz bottle into an Belgian tulip.

A- The label looks really nice, it think it's well done and it caught my eye, Big Sky has good labels. It poured a nice and hazy straw yellow color that took on a nice golden color when held to the light with three fingers worth of creamy white head that died down to a thin layer that stayed till the end and left lots of nice lacing behind. This is a very good looking beer, the color, head, and lacing were all very good, it was pretty close to perfect looking, I have no complaints at all.

S- The aroma starts off with a good medium amount of sweetness followed by a good amount of bready and biscuit like malts. Up next comes some yeast which was on the lighter side of being medium spicy aroma and it was followed by a slight grassy and earthy aroma. Towards the end I got a nice fruity aromas, there were some light citrus rind aromas, but it was the pears that stuck out the most and it worked nicely with this beer. The aroma was good, it wasn't as funky or as earthy as I was expecting put the nice fruit and pear aromas almost made up for it and made for a fairly unique aroma for a Farmhouse Saison.

T- The taste seems to be fairly similar to the aroma, but much lighter, it starts off with a lower amount of sweetness followed by lots of bready and biscuit like malt flavors that were too overpowering and seemed to dominate the flavor of this beer. Up next comes a real light spicy yeast flavor followed by a slight earthy flavor along with a lighter fruit flavor with no discernible fruit sticking out. On the finish there's a lower amount of medium bitterness with a pretty bready aftertaste. The taste was average at best, too much bready malts and not enough grassy and slightly funky farmhouse flavors.

M- Smooth, crisp, slightly refreshing, on the lighter side of being medium bodied with a higher amount of prickly and fizzy carbonation. The mouthfeel was nice and pretty true to style.

Overall I wasn't impressed with this beer and I thought that it was barley and average example of a Farmhouse Saison, the bready malts were just way too overpowering and it lacked most of those traditional Farmhouse flavors that I was expecting, the yeast also didn't show up enough. This beer had ok drinkability, it was smooth, slightly refreshing, and not filling, but the flavors couldn't hold my attention, one is enough for me, it doesn't have enough Farmhouse Saison flavors to keep me coming back for more. What I liked the most about this beer was the appearance it was very good and one of the better looking Saisons I have seen, and the aroma wasn't half bad either. What I liked the least about this beer was that flavor wasn't true to style and the bready malts were just way too overpowering, the taste was a pretty big let down. I wouldn't buy this beer again, I would much rather have New Holland's Golden cap, it's the same price and it's much truer to style, I wouldn't recommend this to anyone who likes the style. All in all I was let down with this beer, it didn't give me any of those Farmhouse flavors that I was looking for. This was a rare let down from BIg Sky, they are a pretty solid brewery, but this beer was much less than solid, better luck next times. So far one of my least favorite Farmhouse Saison's.

Appearance: Slightly hazy, medium golden color, with a robust, coarse white head. The carbonation is moderate, and slow-rising. Scattered, patchy lacing adorns the glass walls.

Aroma: Phenolic notes dominate the aroma, bread malt is also present. Fruit notes are quite restrained; there is a tart quality, and some pepper as well.

Taste: Opens with moderate phenolic notes, which intensify as the taste progresses. Sturdy, tart wheat malt flavors and an earthy bitterness dominate the flavor. There is a little pepper and an almost spectral fruitiness, far less than expected for the style. As the taste progresses, the bitterness intensifies, culminating in a lingering, strong medicinal taste.

Mouth feel: Rich, smooth, and very full.

Drinkability/notes: A rather one-dimensional example of the style, with most of the characteristics that make the style complex and interesting unfortunately understated.

Presentation: Packaged in a standard twelve-ounce brown glass long neck bottle with a pry-off crown, served in a New Belgium chalice.

Sourcing: Purchased at HEB in Austin, Texas in April, 2013.
