From a bottle brought to our beer club...dark and crimson colored. white head. lots of yeast and sediment floating around. smells pretty fucking terrible. really peaty and very sweet. alcohol and malt and syrupy caramel taste. i really think this bottle may have been skunked or something. ive heard this is a good beer but i don't even want it in my glass. not even a sipping beer. Brett: AW! this tastes like BLOOD!

Draft, consumed 01/19/08 at Naja's Place, Redondo Beach.

Golden, burnished appearance with one finger head. Aroma is dark fruit (raisins, dates, figs, etc...) and green apple that increased as the beer warmed. Lacing and active bubbles throughout glass. Flavor was somewhat sweet and crisp. Green apples again. As beer warmed, the green apple character increased to the point of being the dominant flavor.

Not a good encounter with this brew.

The colour is dark amber, almost brown. The liquid is clear. The finger thick head is pale beige with a tint of red. Lots of fine lacing.

The smell is aggressively sweet with notes of apricot jam, fruit candy, strawberries and some alcohol.

The taste is not as sweet as one could have expected from the smell. Quite the opposite, it is almost dry with some sweet fruity flavours, lots of alcohol and some anonymous spices. The aftertaste is dominated by alcohol, some raisins and a very fragile bitterness. The taste is overall simple, unbalanced and uninteresting. Low body.

The carbonation is strong with lots of minimal sharp bubbles. The liquid is a bit thin.

An uninspired Belgian brew, alcoholic like a malt liquor.

Poured beer from bottle to a tumbler at 45 dgrees. Beer was a cloudy brown most likely too cold. Beer had a bready smell and a slight hop smell. big fat tan head with fine bubbles and great lacing. Beer was ver Abbeyish tasting and the alcohol just was way too overpowering blowing away any taste sensation. I will not buy again.

I have read a number of very good reviews about this beer, but once I tried it, I could not understand them. This beer may have some interesting things going on in it, but the alcohol was so overpowering (both on the palate and in the effects it had on me) that I could not enjoy it. I've had stronger ABV beers where you barely notice the alcohol; in this brew it was all I could notice. I split the 750 into two sessions and tasted on two different days to make sure it wasn't bad biorythems or something. Maybe it was a bad bottle. Having said all that, it was a medium brown (translucent- almost thin looking) with a small head that quickly vanished. Aroma had alcohol, malt, sweetness, vanilla (?) and slight yeast. Flavor was alcohol, alcohol, and alcohol. Hidden behind was some malt, soft bread, nutty tones and perhaps a bit of bite from hops. Drinkability- I could barely finish either glass in two sessions because of the alcohol.

Muddy colour, with a beautiful creamy foam, with brown colour. Very persistent.
The smell is sweet (caramel), spicy and with the alcohol very evident.
At the taste: licorice, chicory, spices. A little too alcoholic and sweet.
Medium body.
The aftertase is quite persistent, with licorice, and some alcohol again.

I had this beer on tap at Melton's App & Tap in Decatur, GA. It was poured in a small Caracole tulip glass.

Appearance: The color is an opaque auburn/brown with a dense tan head that slowly dissipated into a thin layer. This beer produces decent lacing.

Smell: The aroma is of fermented, aged, or dried fruit like apples , raisins, dates, etc. This scent is shared with a yeasty malt smell.

Taste: malty with light spices and deep aged fruit flavor.

Mouthfeel: Medium with light carbonation.

Drinkability: The flavor is very pleasant and complex.

Served from bottle into goblet.

A - Cloudy and opaque with a medium brown color. Head is almost non-existent, but there is a little lacing on the glass. There is a large amount of dark brown, clumpy sediment. The beer looks a little "muddy" and not all that appetizing.

S - Smell is sweet and savory at the same time. It is all malt and no hops, as expected for the style. There is a thick musk like mushrooms and Asian plum sauce that doesn't sound nice, but makes me want to take a sip.

T - Taste matches the smell with sweet and savory malt and yeast notes. I get the plum sauce again and other dark fruits, as well as savory notes almost like soy sauce. It is complex, but also a bit muddled to me.

M - Thick mouthfeel and almost totally flat. Better carbonation would help lighten the experience a bit.

D - I can't help wondering if I got a bad or very old bottle. The first impression of muddy and murky held throughout. This was very disappointing based on the beer and brewery's reputation.

Opaque brown with a monster head on it.

Mainly pear, the canned variety in syrup.

This one screams belgian ale. It is bursting with carbonation and sweetness on the tongue that barely masks a powerful taste of alcohol. Not overly complex, this one reminds me of many other belgian brews that have come before it. A good beer, but nothing worth rushing out and experiencing.
