Notes/Commercial Description:
In 1859, Colonel Edwin L. Drake successfully drilled the first oil well in Northwest PA. His first well became known as “Drake’s Folly” by skeptics who soon ate their words as Pennsylvania became responsible for almost half the world’s oil production. Drake’s Crude Oatmeal Stout is a silky smooth, crude oil black malt beverage, which reflects on our region’s rich oil production history.

Pours dark black with just a hint of ruby around the edge when held to the light. Mocha colored head dissapates quickly, with no laceing. Smell is roasty oat malt, but subtle barely hint at the sweetness of the flavor. The taste is sweet to start but a nice bitterness at the back of the toungue with roasted malts throughout, particularly in the finish. The roasted malt character is certainly dominant, fufilling the crude of the name. All in all it goes down easy and you could drink several at a sitting.

Served on tap in a pint glass

Appearance – The beer is served a deep brown, nearly black, color with a one finger head of tan foam. The head fades relatively quickly, leaving a decent level of foamy lace on the sides of the glass.

Smell – The aroma of the beer is quite heavy of chocolate and coffee with some other lighter notes of oat. A little bit of a vanilla smell as well as some notes of a slightly burnt and caramel aroma are there as well, producing a rather pleasant smell overall.

Taste – The taste begins with a smooth and sweet chocolate flavor mixed with a nice oatmeal base. As the taste advances it initially loses a bit of the sweetness with it gaining more coffee and a bit more roast to the middle of the flavor profile. This however changes later on as more oats and some vanilla comes to the tongue, with the coffee fading from the picture. With these transitions that occur toward the end, a very smooth and moderately roasted and sweeter flavor is left to linger on the tongue.

Mouthfeel – The body of the beer is on slightly thinner side for an oatmeal stout with a carbonation level that is rather light overall. The light carbonation was spot on for the style, but the thinner body could have used a bit of a boost as it would have nicely accentuated the sweeter chocolate and oatmeal flavors of the brew quite a bit better.

Overall – A very tasty and smooth oatmeal stout. A little on the more sweet chocolate side, but a very fine drinker overall.

Poured from a brown 12 oz. bottle. Has a black color with a 1/2 inch head. Smell is of chocolate, some oats. Taste is smooth, chocolate, malts, touch of oats, highly drinkable for this abv. Feels light in the mouth and overall is a good quality beer.

Great brew. Appearance wasn't much - was very dark. Just about straight black, maybe some golden-brown held up in the light. Smell was of some sort of caramel/toffee mixture one may get at a coffee shop. Taste was incredible. The first gulp I knew this was EASILY my new favorite brew, EASILY. Tastes like vanilla/chocolate/caramel/butterscotch/god. Very smooth. Body is a bit thinner than I would prefer, but not bad at all. Head was just about nonexistent during pouring. No lacing. I don't consider that bad at all though. Taste and color are my most important factors...and this was easily the best I've ever had.

Appearance - The colour was there for an oatmeal stout. My major concerns with the beer revolved around the lacing and the body. Perhaps spoiled by Sam Smith's classic interpretation of the style.

Smell - What a great smell. Like the taste, I am hit by coffee, vanilla, and chocolate in waves. Great sniff

Taste - The taste was hard to beat. Expected soft vanilla tones but the added chocolate and coffee flavours really tied this beer together compared to other oatmeal stouts. Very tasty and I'd never have expected the 6.9% abv

Mouthfeel - A bit lacking for an oatmeal stout. I want the thick body and with a name like Drake's crude it should be thicker.

Overall - Great interpretation of the beer. The addition of chocolate and coffee flavors tie the beer together without straying too far from the style. Although the light body works against it, the beer is one of the most quaffable (and crushable) oatmeal stouts out there due to this.

A: The beer is essentially jet black in color—only traces of reddish brown are visible near the edge of the glass when it is held up to the sun. It poured with a thin tan head that quickly died down, leaving some wispy lacing on the surface and a thin collar consisting of large bubbles around the edge of the glass.
S: Light aromas of chocolate and dark malts are present in the nose.
T: The taste mostly follows the smell, except that the flavors are a little stronger. No bitterness is perceptible.
M: It feels medium-bodied and rather smooth on the palate with a moderate amount of carbonation.
O: This beer is aptly named because it looks like oil and almost feels like oil when it is going down your mouth.
