After being out in the insanely windy and blustery weather of wny today I was looking forward to having a big warming malty brew this let me a little dissaponited.Poured into a standard pint glass a rich deep amber with a touch of tawny hue a nice tight formed one finger slight off white head atop, lighter aromas than expected for such a big beer some molasses and rown sugar with a touch ogf gummy fruitiness.I was really suprised at how basic the flavors were note very much malt complexity, starting out uneventful with a little dryer woodiness finishing with some molasses and brown sugar sweetness just as simple as that.As the beer warmed the alcohol showed itself more but didnt really lend anything to the beer except for maybe bringing the drinkability factor down a little.Eh not terrible just basic in my mind.

No modest froth here, it comes right to the top of the glass. Ok retention and the clarity is bright. Fruity aroma with a dried biscuit dusting in the nose. Creamy smooth mouth feel, full bodied. Hit of harsh solvent alcohol after each sip, caramel and bready maltiness is there but clouded by the hot alcohol. Hops are minimal. Dry finish with more lingering alcohol heat.

I'm not even sure if age will do this beer any good. Its far from being horrible but it is a chore to sip, it has headache written all over it. A bit too attenuated, hot and fruity for the style.

Appearance: minimal head, cloudy, dark reddish-brown in color, sediment is noticeable, medium carbonation

Smell: toffee and caramel

Taste: toffee, caramel malt, earth, some floral hops in the back

Mouthfeel: medium-heavy body, sweet start with a bitter middle and a less bitter end, moderate carbonation

Overall: I like this one, but it is a sipper. It has a nice combo of earth and sweet malt. I wish I would have picked up more than just a single.

Enjoyed from bottle, may edit review if I try it again when I have my proper glassware. Smell is low-key malts and booze. Taste is smooth and malty at first, finishing hot and boozy but still smooth. Not a bad beer overall, although I assume with all the low reviews it's not a good representation of the style.

Served last night off the cask at Piper's Pub, talk about excellent cellaring. These guys are pouring proper pints. Hug foaming khaki head completed with a smooth creamy texture, body is deep ruby garnett semi clouded. Smells tart with some underlying fruit and raisins. Very malty no real hop presence maybe just a little bit of earthiness. Flavor was okay a bit hot with alchol excessively sweet with malt flowing from every angle. Tart grape and raisins flood the palate as well. More earthy hops blended well. Mouthfeel is creamy silky smooth low well done carbonation, the mouthfeel is money. Drinkability overall is okay but the twang and loads of malt didn't completely agree with me, this is the same brew that went through some name changes but it's been around for quite sometime.

undated12 oz bottle served in a Piraat snifter.

Appearance – Pours a mahogany color with a small and short-lived off-white head. The head left only a sparse spots of lacing.

Smell – Lightly sweet and moderately boozy. Some notes of baked bread and fruits, with a touch of peat smoke.

Taste – Starts quite sweet with caramel, caramelized sugar, and some breadiness. Some smoke works into the taste, becoming peaty in the finish. A boozy, beer liqueur character.

Mouthfeel – Medium+ body; low carbonation; moderate alcohol harshness and warmth.

Overall – More boozy then desirable, even for 10% ABV. Relatively fruity as if a somewhat Belgian version of the style.

I have to admit that right up there with Abbey Ales, a Scottish Ale is my favorite style. Having sid that I had high expectation for this brew.

Based on the best SA's the color is about right id a little too translucent. The head is way to thin and aroma a little on the subdued side.

The mouth is close to the standard but could use more body and the finish is on the right tracj with a nice maltiness but just under standard.

Overall, this is a good US version of the style but best reserved for those being broken-in to moe developed brews

( Served in a dimple mug)

A- This beer has a deep dense walnut brown body with red highlights at the base of the glass. There is a thick sticky tan head of foam and a sea of microbubbles gliding to the surface.

S- The smell of dry dark caramel malt with biscuit malt notes has a light graham note in the finish.

T- This beer has a dry dark toasted malt flavor with a light cream taste to it. There is a coffee malt note in the background and a good light roast bitterness to the finish. As the beer warms there is a cidery note in the finish with a hint of hops aswell.

M- This beer has a medium-full mouthfeel with no alcohol heat until the beer is pretty warm and a even then the alcohol is pretty mellow.

D- This beer has a nice full malt flavor that is well blended and smooth with a supporting bitterness that grows as it warms. The cidery quality added a bit of interest to the finish and was not off putting.

Erie- Ol' Red

A- Beautiful deep amber with a huge frothy head.
S- Funky and musty malt with dried fruits; raisin, prune, fig.
T- Immediate dried fruits like raisin, fig, pineapple, and prune. Dry maltiness with licorice and molasses flavors present.
M- Dry and tangy. Slighty cloying. Hot alc in the end, it is 10%!

Overall- weird smell but otherwise not bad tasting, drinkable and deceptive at 10% alc.
My first Erie beer. I'd like to try their other offerings.

A- pours a rusty red in the glass with a 2-finger head that doesn't hang around long.

S- very sweet smell with chocolate and caramel predominating. actually pretty nice. best part of the beer

T- malts, caramel and warm alcohol taste on the front. scotch flavor is present as well. bitter on the end but something a little off putthing by this bitterness. it's different. don't know if I like it or not

M- little syrupy with not much carbonation. sits a little heavy on the palate

D- this beer is missing something as a wee heavy. little too much bitterness with not the appropriate amount of malts to go along.

A: Pours a thick dark red with a combo of large bubbles and a tiny off white head that fades quickly.

S: Intense Malty Aromas. Strong Caramel, Chocolate, roasted, grainy aroma. It's as if your smelling the grains fresh out of the bag. No hop aroma.

T: Biscuity, Toasted, Dark Chocolate, Sweet Caramel. nice balance between hop bitterness and malt sweetness. More on the sweet side of things though, almost on the edge of too sweet IMO. a slight peated flavor.

MF: Thick, Creamy, low Carbonation. Slight alcohol burn.

D: A very nice scottish ale. This one is up there with Oscar Blues Old Chub in my book.

12oz bottle

A- Pours a dark reddish copper color with an off-white head with decent lacing and retention.

S- The aroma is a lot of toasted and biscuity malt, caramel, and dark ripe fruits.

T- The taste starts out sweet and malty with so
E caramel flavors. The finish has some fruitiness and a lingering sweetness with some warmth from the alcohol.

M- The mouthfeel is medium bodied with a good amount of carbonation.

D- Overall, this is a decent beer that is worth a try.

Poured clear red with a tall light tan head. There's a strong bready toast and crust aroma with a hint of toffee that's a little cleaner than most in the style. The flavor falls a little flat for such a strong beer. There's a earthy spice and creamy candy with the aroma's dark bread grain notes. I suppose it is smooth and easy to drink, but the character just seems muted given the strength.

Pours a nice red-ish brown with a quickly disappearing head. No lacing.

Not much to the nose. Very sweet smell, some fruit and malt. I can't get too specific as I'm not too familiar with this type of beer. Smells good, but its faint.

I wasn't expecting much from the smell, but I was very impressed by the taste. It has a nice balance in the front, some malts and a little sweetness. The finish is a sweet fruity blast that subsides quickly back to malt. That's a nice effect that begs to be sipped again. A slight hint of booze, but not too much.

Mouthfeel is crisp with a thick, syrupy finish. Not too surprising with the sweetness, but it just makes you thirsty.

That little explosion of sweetness did it for me. I would definately drink this beer again. Not necessarily too many at once, but I will look for more. If I can find it.
