12oz bottle from the IGA in Potsdam NY for 2$

Appearance – Slightly hazy gold colour with a huge size fizzy white coloured head. There is an average amount of carbonation and there is some fair lacing. The head lasted for around 4-5 minutes before it was gone.

Smell - Grains/wheat, citric acid, tart cherries

Taste & Mouth - The beer has a ton of carbonation - bubbles bouncing all over the place; almost like a seltzer. I can taste grains/bread mixed with citric acid and tart cherries. There is also a bit of butterscotch/caramel and a rustiness. It ends with a tart aftertaste.

Overall – An interesting beer.. not really what I was expecting. There isn't as much cherry flavour but maybe that's a good thing. It's got shades of a sour beer, so fans of that style might enjoy this beer. The mouthfeel is off, but other than that it's a beer worth trying once. (870 characters)

12oz bottle poured into a pint glass
A:Light orange with a one-finger head
S: Some wheat/malt, a bit of cherry, light/straightforward
T: A bit sweet, black cherry but artificial/a bit soda-like
M: Light-bodied, a bit sweet
O: Reminds me more of soda than beer. Sweet/simple, tasty though artificial (298 characters)

Appearance: pale light red incolor with a short head. No lace develops on the glass.

Smell: cherry sweetness is plentiful here and easy to pull from the glass.

Taste: very sweet beer as the mild malt profile is loaded with a cherry syrup flavor. Very little bitterness here to balance it out. Almost soda-like IMHO.

Mouthfeel: lighter in body. Very crisp to start, less crisp at the finish. Cherry filled aftertaste lingers a bit.

Drinkability: this grew tiring on the tastebuds quickly. If you want a quick fruity refreshing beer, a small glass of this will do. Overall just a bit too sweet. (596 characters)

Not bad for what it is, they threw some artificial cherry flavoring into a cream ale (a popular style up north in these parts) with Genny's Cream ale, and other Canadian versions making some sales. This is a niche beer for those that like this style, and it actually works it's drinkable, pours a pink tinted golden amber hue with a light pink head. Minimal lacing. Aromatics tart cherry with a bread malt base with some cooked veggies and herbal notes. Flavor was sweet but not cloying tart cherries in addition to a nice light cream ale base. Mouthfeel a bit strong with carbonation a bit sweet but drinks smooth, will be popular with the ladies. In closing it's not my style but I always try to give a fair shake to local PA beers especially one like Erie that I've been drinking since I've found good beer. (810 characters)

I poured this beer and it has a light rose color body with a very small head. The aroma is sweet and with a cherry notes. The taste is sweet but not overpouring of cherry, imo it coild be a little more tart. The mouthfeel is watery but goes down easy and overall a good beer. I would drink this in the summer. (309 characters)

Pours a very light color, odd considering it is a black cherry ale. Crystal clear.

I don't smell much out of this beer, smells like watered down apple or grape juice.

Clean and refreshing. Tastes like apples and cherries along with a subtle hop and malt bill. There seems to be a clean juice taste without fruit skins, which contributes to how it feels. Subtle feel, no tannis, watery and light. Very drinkable. (413 characters)

Poured into a Delirium Tremens snifter. No readable fresgbess date.

A- Pours a light copper color with a 1/4 inch head that wastes no time passing away to a thin ring around the edge of the glass and very little surface foam. Average lacing.

S- Mild cherry smell up against some light malt.

T- Artificial fruit flavor that’s surprisingly not too sweet and doesn’t taste like cough syrup, both of which are pluses. Hardly any bitterness to speak of and doesn’t have an especially strong malt base. Sweet raisin aftertaste.

M- Pretty standard. Feels more like a lager. Medium-low carbonation.

O- Easy to drink but also not exciting to drink. At least it doesn’t suck. (679 characters)

Mystery beer at Green Dot Stables in Detroit, Michigan. Figured I'd give it a try... never heard of the beer or brewery before.

Well... I'm surprised this beer is classified as a cream ale. What? It's the very definition of a fruit beer. The black cherry is on the front and back and everywhere in between. It's in the smell, and it's all around. The aftertaste is somewhat tart and pretty sweet, with a malt body that reminds you that this is a beer and not some sort of a wine cooler. Make no qualms about it, this is a fruit beer. It's not a beer with fruit juice added, it tastes like fruit juice with beer added ... take that as you will. It's not an awful beer, but one was enough for me, and I doubt I could ever have more than two in a session. The dominance of the cherry makes this a super "girly beer". Some malt, lots of tart and sweet cherries. It's not bad by any means, but it's far from great. (910 characters)

Pours a clean orange-ish color with a small white head. In the aroma, an English malt and semi dry black cherry note. In the taste, black cherry, not too sweet, more tart, and thin maltiness. A smooth and light bodied mouthfeel, with a small dry hint of tart black cherry in the aftertaste. OK, but kind of thin with a decent cherry flavor. (340 characters)

a quarter inch of bright white fizz settles onto a bright tangerine colored body. other than sweet cherry medicine aromas there isnt much going on in the nose. once more the sweet cherry overpowers the tastebuds, but there is a hint of some citrus from hops in there as well. mouthfeel is a little thin and the carbonation seems to be lacking a touch. overall this is drinkable if you like a dominate cherry flavor, if not, grab one anyway it's not that bad. (458 characters)

12 oz. bottle into a pint glass.

Appearance: A light peach color with some orange thrown in, a lot of carbonation, and a decent off-white head, leaving some nice lacing and drops around the top of the glass.

Smell: The corn and sugar sweetness is there, along with some grain aromas, and finally some syrupy light black cherry or lighter blackberry.

Taste: Going along with the aroma, there's some sugar sweetness and light black cherry, seemingly syrup, and lingering semi-sweetness. Soda-esque, but somehow not as bad as I'd anticipated for a brew like this, and easy-drinking.

Mouthfeel: Lighter-bodied and fairly creamy, and the levels seem to be just right to handle the sweetness.

Drinkability: For what it is, this isn't a bad brew, though I don't think I could have more than maybe two max in a session. And as far as fruit beers, which I'd also consider this, I'd rather drink this than many others out there, and I'm pretty sure my wife's going to like this and agree with me on that point. (1,010 characters)

Now it did say this was a cream ale on the six pack holder but not on the bottle.

Poured into a perfect pint. Pours a pinkish-amber hazy color. With an insane white heading on it. The foam raised well above the rim and held. Left soapy lacing all throuhgout the tasting.

Smell is very subtle in cherry notes and fruitiness.Slight earthiness to it as well.

Taste is very cherry sweet with an almost soda-like taste. Alot smoother than first anticipated. Does leave a linger of cherry in the aftertaste as well as some nuttiness.

Mouth is way overcarbonated but is still very smooth not watery like most overcarbonated beers. A light to medium type beverage.

A bit too much bubbliness for my liking but not too bad. I guess it's kind of geared towards the champagne folk. Not bad but not great. (807 characters)

On tap at The Tap Room on St. John, USVI. Poured a pale pinkish yellow color with a fizzy white head. Aromas of cherry, with a faint wet grain smell. Taste is quite pleasant and thirst quenching with cherry being the obvious dominating flavor. This basically tastes like soda with a mild malt flavor. Tasty if you are thirsty on a hot day but otherwise not much going on here. (376 characters)

I remember liking this better at the Beer on the Bay Beer fest in Erie PA last year (July 2010). It poured a Nice ruby and copper colored body with a super thick, frothy white head and bubbles floating from the bottom are visible. Aroma of cherries, malt, fruit, and maybe Wheat? Tastes just like it smells. Almost like a wine cooler, but I guess better. They go down quick, watch out for the 5%. I guess a good Summer beer. But a little too sweet. (448 characters)

Poured from an undated 12 oz bottle into a pint glass.

Appearance: slightly hazy pale copper with a faint reddish tint. The small white head dissipates rather rapidly leaving just a ring and decent lacing.

Smell: light, sweet malt aroma with a subtle cherry character that seems more natural than artificial.

Taste: light malt flavor with a fair bit of sweetness. The cherry is less subtle, and more tart (thankfully) than anticipated from the nose. Still, (acceptably) sweet overall.

Mouthfeel: medium-light body; medium carbonation; smooth. Nice, but seems too watery.

Overall: a decent and refreshing cherry ale; just don’t expect a lambic or kriek. Not really a cream ale either, (694 characters)

Erie Brewing Co either impresses me or lets me down. There are a few of their beers that I really like, and I few others I don't really care for, but I always give them a shot when I see a brew of theirs that I haven't had yet. That being said, it's time to move on and review Erie Brewing Co's Derailed Black Cherry Ale.

The brew pours a hazy amber brown from what I can tell; let's just say I don't have the pleasure of natural light right now. There also seems to be a faded grayish-red hue toward the corners of the glass (2-D perspective). A silky, multi-layered rim collects itself after a few minutes.

The smell is delicious, albeit it is probably derived from some sort of cherry extract. Canned cherries; that's all I can gather from the smell.

The taste is a little bit of husk up front, with a sweet cherry finish. Muted malts and a pseudo oxidation taste at first, but the cherry sweetness soon washes that away. Still, I'm left with a syrupy tongue more akin to a few maibocks I've run into in the past than a cream ale.

Not a bad brew, but not one I would drink a lot of. (1,089 characters)

This poured out as a golden color with a fizzy white head on top. Not much retention or lacing here. The smell of the beer was pretty heavy on the cherry. The taste of the beer was also pretty big on the cherry too. It's a sweet cherry flavor not a tart one which I personally enjoy. The mouthfeel of the beer was light and refreshing. Overall this brew wasn't terrible, but nothing too exciting either. (403 characters)

My boss brought back a bottle of Derailed from Eric Brewing from his annual Xmas trip to PA. The DBCA poured a clear copper color with fizzy white head that is not lacing. The smell includes hints of cherry...very mild. The taste has a cherry flavor to it and very light malt. The mouthfeel was a lighter bodied ale with good carbonation. Overall it isnt bad, just dont think I could make an evening out of drinking just this beer. (431 characters)

I picked this up at Wegmans, poured chilled from the 12oz into a willybecker.

The color is light amber with a light haze and thin pale pink head which falls to a ring of fine beads, carbonation is visible and rises rapidly. The smell is faintly fruity with a creamy malt/yeast ester with light berry/cherry sweetness in the aroma. The feel is decent with moderate carbonation and slight sweetness upfront with medium body and slight tangy cherry with semi-dry finish.

The flavor is as expected, pretty safe with slight cherry taste that adds a hint of fruit sweetness with a light yeast tanginess and mild creamy texture of malt in the back with a subtle, semi dry mild finish. The flavor is pretty good, not exceptional but it did exceed my expectations -worth a try however I probably will not purchase it again. (818 characters)

A: Pours an odd color not red but not amber. Has a slightly pinkish tint to foamy top.slight lacing down glass.

S: Aroma is of big sweet cherries light malts and little if any hop, if its there I dont smell it.

T: Taste is at first malt which slides into a sweet cherry wine type taste.

M: Mouthfeel is of a medium body and good carbonation level.

O: Overall an all around decent beer, had no idea what to expect. Really hoped it would not taste like a cooler which it does not to me has a beer taste and feel.Would drink this again in a heartbeat. (552 characters)

Poured from a 12oz bottle into a Sam Adams perfect pint.

This is the second chance I've tried this beer. First time, the bottle was obviously old, it gushed out the bottle as soon as I opened it and did not smell good at all. This time, it was in as new stock, so I jumped on the chance to try it, given my obscene love for black cherry soda. Pours a golden color with a small head. Aroma is mild, grainy, and sweet, with a touch of cherry. The taste has a bit more of the cherry in it, along with the aformentioned sweet, grainy malts. There's not too many other dimensions in here, it's a pretty simple brew. I wouldn't mind more cherry flavor, it's present on the beginning and leaves a slight lingering flavor, but for a "black cherry ale", I expected more fruit. The mouthfeel is satisfying, with a nice level of carbonation, and the drinkability is good. It's an alright brew, I can't help but want something more though. (928 characters)

A - One finger of loose, bone white head on top of a golden brown body. The head has surprising staying power and leaves decent lace.

S - Light, grainy malt with lots of berry-like fruit aroma. Raspberries and black cherry.

T - A big, sweet note of juicy raspberryies and pears up front. Some light toasted malt backing up the fruit.

M - Medium body, moderate carbonation, and a reasonably dry finish

D - I didn't expect too much from this beer, but it is actually pretty dectent. It is not at all complex, with the fruit flavor thoroughly dominating anything else, but it is relatively mild and it avoids becoming cloyingly sweet or cough syrup like. If you want a mild, non wheat dominated fruit beer, this would be a decent choice. (738 characters)

A - orangish gold with a big, soapy, soft, white head that has decent retention

S - grainy with some faint cherry notes

T - cereal grains, sweet, black cherry syrup

M - a bit sticky, medium bodied, crisp

This concept has potential. I like the creaminess of the beer and the cereal grains seem spot on. Had real black cherries been used this would probably be a hit. As it is the artificiality of the cherry flavoring is off putting. I'm glad I tried it, but I won't seek it out again. (488 characters)

12 oz bottle, tulip

A – Amber, a lot of orange especially where the light shines through easily. A decent ¾ inch head that drops down to a couple centimeters, very white.

S – Definitely getting some cherry notes, as expected based on the description, but some caramel and sugar as well. Might even say there’s a hint of alcohol.

T – Very tart, actually a lot of characteristics of a sour beer. Not as sweet as expected based on the smell, but definitely makes me pucker a little bit. It’s not necessarily like Warheads, but it’s not that far off from Shock Tarts. Amazingly, I’m not saying this actually a bad thing. Because it’s carbonated very well there’s quite a good balance with the sourness and the sugar I am getting. Tartness lingers briefly on the finish.

M – Very highly carbonated, effervescent. The sour and sugar are there and then just as quickly gone, with just the mild tart finish.

O – Not at all what I expected when I opened the bottle, from the appearance through to the flavor. It definitely has cherry, but much more of a tart, sour version than the sweetness I thought would be there. Don’t know that I could drink these all day, but as a one-off I am pleasantly surprised. (1,254 characters)
