Beer review from BA Mag Dec 2007.

Yeah, Mad Anthony kicked some serious Red Coat ass back in the day and helped keep America alive during the 1790s. This APA is dedicated to him as one of his burial grounds is in Erie, PA.

Beautiful lacing on the glass, with a solid formation of off-white head that shows excellent retention. Clean and clear light amber color. Fresh hop aroma with a mildly pungent herbal and wild flower character, the aroma quickly jumps to a malty nose of caramel cake batter and a pear fruitiness. Deceivingly dry malt flavor has a crispness that pulls you in quick; fluffy medium body. The malt character is there but gives way to the impressive hop presence that relies on more flavor than bitterness for the most part. The bitterness is there, just not sharp and the hop flavor seems to run the show with herbal, woody and mild citric rind. Malt does spike here and there with toasted and caramel flavors. Some fruitiness middle to end, touch of yeast as well. Long hoppy finish with a semidry palate.

All in all this comes across as a stand up example to the American Pale Ale style, and makes for a solid session ale with its mid-range level of alcohol. A lovely ale to be had.

A: Pours a clear golden amber with a thin white head that dissipates quickly.

S: Aromas of caramel, biscuit, lemon, lime, herbs, and mandarin orange are present on the nose, but are very muted.

T: Indistinct flavors of lemon, lime, herbs, and mandarin orange take a little time to express themselves, but are muted even further by the emergence of a jumble of caramel, cream, biscuit, and mineral notes at mid-palate. The finish is very short with fleeting notes of minerals, caramel, and orange.

M: Medium in body and dryish. Carbonation is very crisp and intense, but the ale goes down well enough. I have a feeling that if the mouthfeel were a bit better balanced and the carbonation tamed a bit, this ale's flavors would be easier to discern.

O: I really do not know what happened here. Looking at some of the other reviews, I seriously wonder if I have been drinking the same beer. This is a fairly simple, straight-forward ale, but unfortunately it is not simple in an appealing way. There just isn't enough going on in this ale to sustain my interest.

A- Hazy golden amber modest head, ample lacing.

S- Sweet malts, bready, a little yeast in there too. Hop bitterness.

T- Sweet malts vs. Bitter hops 12 rounds no holds barred.

M- Wet and easy. Quality.

O- Not bad at all. Well balanced, nice hop additions. Has an IPA feel without being rude.
