On tap at Bocktown 07/27/2011

Poured into a 12 oz snifter. Arrived at my seat with a thin layer of yellowish bubbles sitting on top of the ruby orange body. Bad lighting in this place, but the pour looks solid, allowing very little light through. Zero lace, as expected.

The nose has a bunch of bourbon that hits you fast and hard. The background characters are a combo of vanilla, brown sugar, toffee and sweet malts.

As the nose suggests, the bourbon flavor dominates the palate. The sweetness starts out the taste and also brings up the rear. Bready and chewy throughout.

Medium bodied, a little slick with moderate carbonation.

I am super surprised about this one! This is every bit as complex and tasty as some of the bigger boys out there...they really got the barrel aging right. Cheers to the boys in Erie...they have a winner with the Bourbon Barrel Aged Ol' Red Cease And Desist Scottish Ale...get it in bottles and do a special release guys!!!

On-tap at Ale+Witch

A - It pours a ruddy chestnut hue, with tinges of orange, and is capped with a wispy film of gray-tan froth.

S - The nose smells sweetly oaky from the get-go. Notes of vanilla, toffee and cherry are present but not overpowering. Bourbon is suggested, but not so much experienced. There may be a slight infection, in the early stages, as I am getting a bit of the apple note that seems to accompany infected -bals.

T - The flavor is right in line with the nose. Mild and pleasant, this brew has a good contribution from the barrels; despite the mild level of flavor, the treatment seems to have largely obliterated the base beer. Notes of oak, vanilla, toffee, and dulce de leche are the mainstay, along with a trailing apple note that may or may-not be a sign of infection. If it is infected, it is very mildly so at this point, not even on the level of an infected English Porter.

M - A tad thin, and not tremendously enhancing, but it still works pretty good.

O - I am somewhat impressed by this. It is pretty damn good for Erie, that's for sure.

Erie Bourbon Barrel Aged Ol' Red

(personal milestone, review #1000)

Ontap into a snifter. Pours a murky brown, small head and no lace. Aroma of bourbon, sweet malts, vanilla and caramel. The taste mimics the nose, with lots of vanilla, sweet caramel, rum raisen, bourbon, residual sugars and tannins. A really tasty beer and the barrel aging apparent in the nose really shows up in the flavor too. Nice barrel aged character on an already dynamic beer. Delicious stuff here.
