This place is tucked into an inconvenient part of downtown on the northeast side. I went here the first year I was in Athens because I heard they produced a Vanilla beer. I ordered it and it was pretty good but when I returned several months later they no longer had it but had an unimpressive variety of bottles and a few taps. It turns out Thomas Creek (I am told) formerly provided the house beers but has since stopped. It is time to renew this tradition!

The servers know nothing about the beers but that is not a surprise. The atmosphere is like any bar attached to a restaurant. They have some decent bottles, ranging from Duvel to Terrapin but there aren't that many. Taps are usually pretty good but don't be surprised to see Bud Light up there. Food is better than you would expect only because they are attached to a restaurant. Try the fried ravioli, they are yummy. Other than the food though it is none too impressive.

They do host (with the Foundry) the Classic City Brew Fest every year.

I've hung out here a few times to meet friends, etc, but it would not be my first choice. While the atmosphere is nice and the service is not bad, the value for the price you pay is low.

The food and beer is good, but everything is overpriced. There are several cheaper alternatives in Athens that feature the same taps and similar food.

They have a lovely patio and their fish and chips are great. I would like it more if they had a few more beers that I could not find in other places and lowered their prices by 10%.

sooo. when visiting friends' houses make sure they have a functioning computer. so this doesn't happen to you: a ba buddy (the fearless tireless georgia beer guide) tells you about a brewpub near where you are going to stay. you ASSUME the computer will work there so you don't write down what the name of the place is. so off you wander (read: you drive an hour and a half) to a pub you don't know the name of in a city you've never been to (in know somewhere davo is reading this saying: rookie) and somehow you find the place, after all athens ain't that big. but it doesn't open until the time you have to LEAVE by. maird.

so you look for another place. the phone book lists this athens steam pub as a brewpub. so off you go again.

alas, it ain't no brewpub. but a decent beer bar it is. for a hotel bar, anyway.

like i said its part of a hotel but not like a holiday inn or motel 6. the bar is separate form the hotel in its own little building. still, doesn't have that pub feel. but as far as the place was from the strip it was decent.

beers were in good shape and the help was good. helps that the barkeep at the time was the bar manager. we talked a lot about beers in the south. good guy. but the waitress we dealt with wasn't so helpful.

8 or 10 brews on tap. 3 lites and the rest decent or better. then 20+ beers in bottles, again most good. rogue et al.

i'd like to give the place more than the scores above but i can't pick any one area to bring it up.
