The last real watering hole on the AT (no, really, the AT goes right through town) until you get north of the Whites. Bone up on the trail ahead from local AT expert Baltimore Jack, who frequents this pub and has hiked the Trail a half a dozen times or so.

I visited recently and they were remodeling; unfortunately, this is one of those places that isn't helped by a fresh coat of paint. Its charm comes from its dive bar feel, first diving down a dark alley, then descending some steep stairs to this formerly poorly-lit bar.

There's BMC on tap, along with some local micro stuff. My most recent pint of Long Trail Ale tasted off enough to make me wonder how old the keg was. The food is good, even the steak, according one very hungry friend of mine.

Since the last few reviews, this has become a non-smoking establishment but retains the same clientele. 5 Olde is the last real pub in Hanover with greasy pub fare (think muffins grilled on a skillet with butter with your quiche special) and reasonably-priced brews. Their tap selection is average at best and includes some local picks, but their bottle selection bumps them up to the now average level of the town. Service is there but not overwhelming and the bartender is always kind and sometimes ready to let you sample a new rarity. If you're looking for your local watering hole, it's still at 5 Olde.

This bar has great food, the best atmosphere in town, a lot of fun. If you're alergic to cigarette smoke you might want to avoud the bar area.
The place is underground, literally, it is where all the local restaurant employees go after work. There is a fantastic picture of Babe Ruth up close wearing a Boston jersey when he was young and still a lean horse of a guy. The beer is good and the place is a lot of fun late at night. Worth a visit, especially if you've gone to the Canoe Club and gotten a dose of their snooty service.
