I love Big Buck Brewery. Just wish it was closer. Helluva beer selection, and damn good food. If you ever want to try the best buffalo burger in the state, this is the place. Plus the beer cheese soup is outta this world. The atmosphere is like a huge cabin up north, with numerous trophy bucks lining the walls. The back of the establishment is where the beer is brewed, and it is surrounded by glass, so you can get a good look at what is going on in there. The best part, the beer, is damn fine. With numerous seasonal brews, and solid, well made year round offerings, this is a great place to have dinner, get a pint, fill your growler, etc. etc. The prices are reasonable, and the staff is pretty well versed in the beer that they offer. Highly recommended if you come across one on your I-75 road trip.

The Place (the good)
When I first walked in I was really impressed with this place. It's huge. Has a feel like it should be located about mid-mountain at a Summit County, CO ski resort in the rockies. I found a seat at the end of the bar which was pretty much full, and the resturaunt area seemed just as full. It was a Tuesday night about 8:30 and the Cards were plaing the Mets in game 5 of the NLCS.

The Beer (the bad)
Unfortunately, the longer I stayed, the more my positive first impression faded into a desire to finish my beers and leave. I ordered a sampler of six beers, 3 of which were unmemorable (a light, a kolsch, and something else) the rest (a pale ale, an IPA and a stout) were better, but nothing to write home about. I wish I had ordered a sampler of the specialty beers, but the bartender failed to mention this option when I inquired about a sampler.

The Service (the ugly)
When I first got there, it appeared that they were having a problem getting food to folks at the bar. The guy sitting next to me said he waited an hour before his burger came out. I figured I would start with something simple so I ordered chips and salsa. The chips came out pretty quick, but the bartenders seemed to ignore me from then on out. I was halfway through my sampler, before I was able to get the bartenders attention for a napkin. At this point (~9pm) the bar crowd had pretty much been cut in half since I first walked in, so it wasn't as if they were real busy. Seemed like they spent more time just hanging out at the cash register, than paying attention to the customers. The salsa was good but the tortilla chips were stale and greasy. I decided to just pay my bill and find somewhere else to watch the end of the game.

Stopped into Big Buck for the first time on a lazy Sunday afternoon with my wife and a pair of friends. The place was empty, save a couple of guys at the bar watching the Lions game. Even still, took a while to get served. Ordered the beer sampler, which I had mixed feelings about. The Redbird Ale was good, the Black River Stout was very good, but they also included the Buck Naked, which I definitely could have done without. I ordered the Buffalo Burger, which as other reviewers noted, is excellent. Finished the afternoon with a Doc's ESB, which was good, if not too smooth for me to think of it as an ESB. Nice place, might go again if nearby, but I don't think I'll be making a special trip for it anytime soon.

Stopped in here on a very busy night. Last day of international Formula SAE competition, held about few blocks away...

Very large on the inside, they were able to comfortably accomadate teams of 20-40 people, and the unfortunate couples who were there at the time, and everyone in between. Even with several tables put together for the teams, there was plenty of walking room. The bar is pretty small, though, and it was a real fight to get a brew there, with all the people around. The bartenders were working their asses off, I should add. Outdoor themed brewpub, but it was not too corny. Ceiling was very high, part of it adorned with buck heads. Some nice very large carved wooden bears stood guard over the dining area. Rustic looking tables and chairs, which were also comfortable. Also some pool tables to the side of the bar. The back of the restaurant was filled with tall fermenting vessels and partitioned off with glass.

Our team had two servers, one for each side of the table. They were about as good as they could be, given the extreme amount of people there. Even though the servers were running around like crazy, they took time to explain beers to people and joke around with us. They were very friendly and made sure we were taken care of.

The menu presented a diverse array of food, with about average prices for the food and beer. Wide array of year-round beers, and about six or so seasonals. I had the Black River Stout, Doc's ESB, and a few IPAs. The food and the beers both did me proud - I would check this place out again.

I definitely feel like I got my money's worth here. It was a good time with the race team, but it would also be a good place to take the lady.
