500 ml bottle into weizen glass, best before 10/2014. Pours hazy deep orange/copper color with a 2 finger dense and fluffy off white head with great retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lingers. Nice spotty soapy lacing clings down the glass, with a good amount of streaming carbonation retaining the head. Aromas of big banana, orange, pear, apple, clove, bubblegum, herbal, grass, wheat, toasted bread, light caramel, and yeast earthiness. Very nice aromas with good balance and complexity of fruity/earthy yeast and bready malt notes; with good strength. Taste of banana, orange, pear, apple, clove, bubblegum, wheat, toasted bread, light caramel, herbal, grass, and yeast earthiness. Slight wheat tartness on the finish; with lingering notes of banana, orange, pear, apple, clove, bubblegum, wheat, toast, light caramel, herbal, grass, and yeast earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Very nice complexity and robustness of fruity/earthy yeast, bready malt, and light hop flavors; with a great yeast/malt balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Medium-high carbonation and medium bodied; with a very smooth, crisp, and lightly creamy/bready mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is well hidden with minimal warming present after the finish. Overall this is a very nice hefeweizen style. All around nice complexity and robustness of fruity/earthy yeast, bready malt, and light hop flavors; and very smooth and crisp to drink. A very enjoyable offering.

The second of four small-batch releases from this legendary German brewery, Hacker-Pschorr's Sternweisse is a dark wheat beer/hefeweizen that pours a cloudy, murky amber in my Hacker-Pschorr hefe glassware. I get a rich, frothy head of off-white carbonation and some minor lacing.

The aroma here is strong on the spices. I get wheat, caramel, coriander and some traces of clove. Very promising start, indeed!

The taste is sweet but well-balanced. It's a malt-based beer, of course, but the touch of spice adds some depth. I get some dark fruit underneath it all, too, before it finishes with a citrusy lemon spice hint.

This is an exquisite, complex, and very very drinkable brew, light enough for Summer (or anytime) enjoyment.

Best before 10/2014.

Pours a murky light brown with a foamy beige head that settles to wisps of film on top of the beer. Small streaks of lace form around the glass on the drink down. Smell is of wheat, toast, caramel, earth, and spice aromas. Taste is much the same with toast, caramel, and spice flavors on the finish. There is a mild amount of spice bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a lower level of carbonation with a slightly crisp mouthfeel. Overall, this is a pretty good beer with a nice combination of toast and caramel qualities in the flavor.

Pours a glowy amber brown color. Very cloudy. The head built up nicely on the initial pour into a tall weizen glass, but it faded rather quickly after the glass was full, leaving a scant few bubbles just on the surface of the beer. To be fair, my memory for lacing isn't incredible, so I don't really know how that compares to other hefes. Bready, wheaty aroma. Nice wheat spice. Some lemony flavor. Moderate banana. Mild clove. Some caramel. Similar taste. Very mild citrus tartness with a lot of wheat and malt sweetness. Not too big on banana, though it is kicking around. Bit stronger with the clove. Good deal of simple sweetness. Finishes with a funny bitter note, possibly from all that yeast kicking around. Carbonation is a bit low for a hefe. Mouthfeel is generally sorta flat and thin. It just doesn't have the velvety rich feel of top examples. Not bad, not great. Probably better before it left home.

A - a cloudy, yeasty orange/brown (almost a copper) with a surprising amount of carbonation bubble upon the pour. Really nice head which was almost a faint yellow; three fingers deep.

S - unfortunately, like many H-P beers, the aroma of the Sternweisse is not very strong. What is there is good; mostly a heavy wheat smell with a hint of citrus, but there is not much of it.

T- Very nice and even taste; has a nice hearty wheat taste to start with hints of banana and citrus, the center continues the flavor and evens it out and the end bears a little tinge of strong wheat flavor. As a Kellerbier, the cloudy quality gives it a nice yeasty accent which gives the flavor some substance and depth; very solid.

M - Very smooth; a little bubbly sensation with the first few sips subsides for a very even sip. Unlike regular weissbier, the naturtrueb subsidizes the sweet and fruity flavors with a nice yeasty overtone, making the sips a little less sticky and a little more full. A filling beer and quite satisfying.

O - The Sternweisse, for the more adventurous beer drinker, is a much better bet than your average Hefe - or dunkel; although this is not a complex beer per se, the flavors are well-balanced and the naturtrueb gives this beer a nice twist. Really nice late afternoon beer.
