Poured into a mug. Color is a clear orangish-brown, head is thick and generous, and dissipated into a pleasant ring.
Aroma consists of toffee-like malts, rusty water, and... do I detect bourbon or whiskey???
The flavor is dominated by the caramel/toffee malts... at first. There's no hop profile to speak of, but there is this certain bitterness, and a certain funky sourness somewhere. Eventually I figured it out... it's that whiskey I detected. I noticed it halfway through the mug, and once I noticed it, it was practically all I could taste... so if you like whiskey, more power to ya.
The beer was incredibly drinkable and easy going down... until I noticed the whiskey thing (I have negative flavor-associations with whiskey), but that's a personal issue and I wouldn't take off points from it, plus no other reviewers seemed to have mentioned it, so it could just be this particular batch. Hopefully I can get past that issue, because before I noticed it, I found this to be one of the best of the Octoberfest beers that I had sampled.
