Forbidden as it was to brew in summer, a stronger beer – the Märzen – was brewed earlier in March. It would finally be served at the Oktoberfest, under the “Heaven of Bavaria”. We have returned once again to the age-old recipe and recreated that gloriously smooth, honey-coloured piece of history from times gone by. And all is brewed with due reverence to the Bavarian Purity Law of 1516.

Definitely, the classiest and most complex, of the three German Oktoberfest biers I sampled on 9-30-04. Not necessarily the most drinkable.
Pours a very attractive, clear, apricot/orange, body with a one finger, tightknit, beige, head that eventually deposits silky, sheet lace all over the glass.
Mouthfeel is exceptional, being creamy, almost chewy, very smooth, with a mild hops bite for the tongue.
Taste is malty, with toffee notes leading into hints of molasses, and figs, suggestive of a Bavarian doppelbock. Floral and herbal hops bitterness come on strong, toward the finish, to lend a bit of balance, and clean aftertaste.
Very satisfying, Marzen here.. a hint of doppelbock characteristics adds a heaviness, that is flavorful, but hurts drinkability. Bottle label is, most likely, the most attractive of the Munich, festbiers.

330ml bottle pours a rich, orange-brown color with a decently thick cap of dense, light tan-colored head that fades down to a thick ring while leaving a tiny bit of lacing. Smells of bready malts and caramel. Hearty and toasty bready malt flavor with tons of caramel flavor, and a bit of honey too. Small floral-herbal hop flavor with a mild bitterness. Small sweetness, medium-to-full body, mostly bitter aftertaste, and a mildly bubbly carbonation mouthfeel.

This is a solid Märzen, but the balance leans just a tad more bitter than I'd like. Still very enjoyable but it won't be one of the brands I reach for when I want a really splendid Märzen.

11.2oz bottle purchased as a single for $3.29. I'm not sure when this was bottled; it has a lot number L640897 and it has a best by date of 04.2024.

Look: It has a very nice dark copper color with nice, steady carbonation. Good clarity. There was about a finger and half of creamy, tan-colored head that eventually reduced to a very thin layer.

Smell: It smells very malty with nutty and honey notes, as well as toasted grain. Some caramel and toffee. There is a bit of a floral and spicy, earthy background note.

Taste: It's very tasty and pretty easy to drink. The taste follows the nose. It is a malt-leaning beer but it also has enough hops and bitterness to make it balanced and drinkable. The finish is crisp and has a mild, spicy, and earthy bitterness. There is a nice chewiness on the palate. I don't think that I would want to drink more than one or two of these in a session.

Feel: It's medium bodied or slightly below. Nicely carbonated and the mouthfeel has a bit of chewiness. Compared to some other Marzen's that I have had, the mouthfeel could be better.

Overall: I don't think that I have ever had this before. I think that this is similar in some ways to Ayinger's marzen, which I really enjoyed, but it's hard to say without tasting them side by side.

One of my favorite beers during the Oktoberfest season.
I just realized I haven't reviewed it yet.
Perfect balance, great taste, crisp finish.
What's not to love about this beer?

Look - amber and clear, small head, lacing was minimal
Smell - woody, spice, grassy, bready
Taste - fruity sweetness, toasted malts
Feel - medium light body, medium light carbonation, dry finish
Overall - The body feels a bit light and this brew does not seem too filling. You can probably pound the hell out of these all day. There's a good fruity sweetness and toasted malt taste that really makes you want to take another sip. This is a good starter brew to crank up the jams and Oktoberfest. Pairs well with My Sharona by The Knack. Prost!
