A: Drinking from a mug but looks like a light brown colour.
S: That snappy sherbet smell.
T: Yup, a good bit of sherbet in there and some prickly ginger. Has a lovely marzipan and fruit snap on the tongue. Almost sweet. It's just a tad papery. Bread pudding in the aftertaste. Also some strawberry Chewits.
M: The mouthfeel is a lively but soft effervescence. Almost sweet.
O: Good. I really must visit Bamberg some time.

That slightly wheatey sour sarsaparilla/root beer taste and slight bitter after taste
makes this beer of more interest for an English beer drinker than most German beer.

Poured from bottle. Aroma of grass. Hazy golden with white head. Light bitter taste. Medium body, thin texture, average carbonation. Overall not bad, but not really my favorite style.

The two fingers of head that sits on top of its peachy amber body is light and fluffy and recedes rather quickly. The sides of the glass bare no lace. Despite its haziness you can still see that it is well carbonated.

Fresh grassy tips poke out of its zesty orange center. Lemon rind and white pepper make things a bit more interesting. There's a rich, spicy breadiness prominent throughout with a streak of caramel. It's not overly pronounced but its spicy and bready nuances make for a good smelling beer.

The taste is more sweet than I had anticipated. The caramel is sturdier and the breadiness is more rich. A dash of spiciness adds some prickliness but as with the lemon peel, these qualities remain on the edges of its flavor profile. A musty earthiness is the more encompassing impression.

Perhaps it has something to do with it making the long trip from Germany to Halifax, I found this beer very under-carbonated. It explains why I found its sweeter, weightier qualities more prominent. It's light to medium bodied with a bit of slickness. For me, this was its weakest quality.

Again, my own expectations let me down. I was thinking this would be a staple and reference point for the style given its origins and I found it to be a lackluster example in terms of flavor, complexity and feel when comparing to other interpretations of the style I've had in the past. If I ever got the opportunity, I'd be more than willing to try this fresh to see how it compares.

500 ml bottle purchased from LCBO for $3.35 CDN. Served cold into glassware.

Appearance - hazy rich golden color with a finger plus of white head. The head recedes quickly back into the beer. A few wisps of white soap linger on top.

Smell - mostly a combination of a ready, dry and slightly earthy aroma. Not a lot else going on. Some cereal grains here.

Taste - hard to describe other than it's like the. One, but blended together in the most wonderful fashion. Fully flavoured and delicious. Cereal grains throughout.

Mouthfeel - soft mouthfeel and lower than average carbonation but somehow this works.

Overall - really delicious soft summertime brew on the palate. With lower ABV this would be downright session able, as it is one of the first of the style but definitely something I would buy again.

Enjoyed a mug on tap at Wurst in Calgary. A light cloudy golden color topped by an inch or so of large white bubbles, with an aroma of yeasty bread and butter, grassy and floral German hops, and maybe just a hint of yellow citrus. Palate features a pleasant cereal grain/plain donut malt backbone along with more buttery yeast and some sour green flavors like rhubarb or gooseberry, dried tinny apricot, lemon rind, something rather fleeting and ephemeral that makes me think tropical fruit. A nice whiff of sulphur. Highly carbonated and thin bodied yet not watery. Nice floral hop bloom. Finishes dry and bitter but nothing tannic or coarse. Wonderful summer thirst quencher with flavor to spare. Not wickedly complex but that's likely not the point.
