A - Nice three finger head on the pour; a dark burnt orange color flirting with brown and red depending on the lighting. Bubbling at the surface following the slow subsiding of the head. Cloudy like a good Dunkleweizen should be.

S - like the Hefeweizen, the aroma of this Weissbier is by no means strong, although the smell that does arise is very good. A nice wheaty smell with citrus overtones and a hint of malt; regrettable that the smell is not slightly stronger.

T - the one downside is the lack of heaviness which should be expected from a good dunkelweizen bier; a thicker consistency would do wonders here. That being said, the flavor is much more telling than the smell. Definitely a malty taste with an overtone of banana and citrus and undertones of malt and a wheat taste. Like the Hefeweizen by HP, the fruit flavor is strong and, at times, may flirt with being too strong at the sacrifice of the hops. Still a very enjoyable taste and like many wheat beers by HP consistently good to the last drop.

Mouthfeel: good carbonation levels; a nice tingle; could use a little more body to the beer but good enough where it would not detach from your enjoyment.

O - To be honest, I would love to give this beer closer to a 4 than a 3.5; it really is a smooth and enjoyable beer, but it lacks the intricacy and higher complexity a 4+ beer deserves. An enjoyable and present beer, but by no means a powerhouse.

Weisse Dark – Dark Wheat (5.3%) - Hacker-Pschorr
☆☆☆

App: Pours dark amber to copper brown with a very nice two finger beige head that settles quickly, leaving a lot of high, stringy lacing. Overall retains pretty well, leaving a constant quarter inch head all the way down the glass.

Smell: Strong weisse yeast coming through, with hints of persimmon, banana, and clove. Malt body is pretty noticeable with some biscuit-like notes and hints of sweeter caramel malt. Some volatile phenols with a deep breath.

Taste: Fairly mild in flavor overall. Not nearly as pronounced in its esters as many lighter wheats. Flavors are much less pronounced as suggested by aroma. Slight hints of bread like wheatiness, as well as some sweet banana/clove flavors that are common to style. Malt and hops flavors are more up front in this style, with malts adding more caramelized and rich flavors. Hops come through in that this beer doesn't have the lingering sweetness of a lot of wheats.

Mouth: A little thin on body, though not watery. Carbonation is medium-high, but not stinging.

Home tasting, 11.2oz bottle into Snifter. 1/28/14.

A: The beer is slightly hazy amber in color and has some yellow hues along with a light amount of visible carbonation. It poured with a quarter finger high beige colored head that died down a bit, leaving a thin layer of bubbles covering the surface and a collar around the edge of the glass.
S: Light to moderate aromas of bananas, clove and wheat are present in the nose.
T: The taste is similar to the smell and also has some notes of sweet malts.
M: It feels light- to medium-bodied on the palate and has a moderate amount of carbonation.
O: This beer has some nice complexities and is very easy to drink. It is a good representation of the style.

20oz pint at the Underground.

This beer appears a clear, bright bronzed amber hue, with one solid finger of tightly foamy, bordering on creamy beige head, which leaves some dense painted limestone wall lace around the glass as things slowly recede.

It smells of bready caramel malt, applesauce, a soft minerality, and understated earthy, leafy hops. The taste is more bready, cake-like roasted caramel malt, a slightly edgy wheaty graininess, a hint of banana chips, apple skins, weak clove/coriander spice, and weedy, earthy noble hops.

The bubbles are quite on the down-low, and nothing more, the body medium-light in weight, and generally smooth, in a soft water sort of manner. It finishes off-dry, the dark caramel malt and attendant semi-sweet breadiness holding sway, as the fruitiness and weak hops falter.

A decent dunkel, the sweetness definitely the star here, as outlined above. Good, overall, but the barest of upticks in ABV surely isn't enough to justify the hit to my tastebuds. Nice, but unfortunately readily forgettable.

Poured from a 330 mL bottle into a flared hefe glass with a moderate hand. Best by 11/13 according to the bottle. Hmmmm. That's next month. I recently sucked down a sixer of Hacker Pschorr's regular Weisse offering, so I wanted to try the darker counterpart.

A: Attractive dark amber body. Surprising clarity. Slightly off-white head, about 3 fingers worth. Died down to a thin coat after about 3 minutes and hung around for the full glass. Light lacing.

S: Dark fruit, raisins and malt coupled with a lighter presence of typical hefe scents - banana, subtle spice. Yeast. Hitting the mark pretty well here.

T: Malt and sweet caramel notes up front with a smooth transition into fruity hefe flavors. Toasted bread. Very light bitterness - barely perceivable - on the finish. A wheat tartness develops in the aftertaste after a few gulps. No alcohol presence.

M: Moderate to high carbonation. Bit prickly like a hefe. Body is somewhat lighter than I think the flavor profile calls for. Lacks the creaminess I enjoy in the style. Serviceable.

O: Tasty beer, but certainly not blowing me away. Perhaps a bit past its prime. I'm squeaking it in about a month before it's recommended date. Wish I had paid closer attention when I picked it up. I gave HP's Weisse very high marks, but this does not perform at quite the same level. Not bad though, I'll have to try it fresher.

Prost!
