A nice brown brew with an ample white head of foam. The aromas hit you in the nose with a 1-2 punch of spices/cloves and bananas. The taste is fruity and spicy all at once, with no alcohol to be found...anywhere! The mouthfeel is light and airy, yet substantial for a dunkel. The drinkability is endless and that's the way that it should be...

Appearance: rosy, cloudy, beneath a lush, looming, lovely dollop of a creamy, puddingesque head.
Aroma: creamy, clovey, there's the banana, too, with a whiff of other tropical fruits, sensuous, arousing, inherently likable.
Great grit and grab on the palate with first sip, nice blitz of hops, followed by lush, mellow malt. Great body, long, lingering finish, persistent flavor. Smooth, and very easy on the tongue, Goes down the gullet nice as a dream.
A good dunkel-weisse is a wonderful thing, and Hacker's is a sterling example.

Had on-tap at a local German Joint...

- Cloudy brown/amber with a tint of orange.. creamy off-white head that was about an inch thick... took a moment to settle down to a thick stream of gooey lacing.

- Smell of fruit.. ester, banana Belgian yeast scent.. slight creamy malt..

- Rather smooth, fruity, yeasty, little bit of bread... some clove, cinnamon..

- Little dry and left a strong aftertaste... but overall good..

- Very drinkable... was great ice cold, smooth.. perfect carbonation... not bad.

* Just had, but reviewing from memory..

Presentation: 12 oz bottle - label actual reads Weisse Dark (but it matches the pictures, so I assume this is the same beer). Produced on date on the label.

Appearance: Dark orangish brown color, with a good sized head. Just a bit cloudy. Head fades mostly, but leaves a bit of lacing.

Smell: Lots of yeasty aroma, banana and just a bit of cloves. Nice malty sweetness undertones.

Taste: Similar to the aroma - nice yeasty flavors, some banana flavors, and a good malt backbone. Carbonation is a bit higher than I would have preferred.

Overall impression: Other than the prickly carbonation, this was a great beer - nice balance of flavors, highly drinkable, should go well with food

Another excellent beer from Hacker-Pschorr.

A: Slightly hazy deep amber color. Big foamy head has OK retention and leaves bits of lace. Somewhat active carbonation.

S: Caramel, lemon, coriander and cloves interplay nicely.

T: Yeasty and dry. A sharp coriander and clove bitterness bites at the tongue. Sweet toffee and banana flavors mingle in the back ground.

M: Medium body with the high carbonation level associated with this style.

D: Very nice beer that I'd love to visit again. Good for a summer session.

Being the wheat beer fan that I am....

Pours a heavy duty head. Almost uncontrollable. Not all that dark. More of a cloudy rust. Not that much nose. Little citrus.

Taste is what counts. Caramel or malt mostly; some citrus, not much spice. Fairly sweet. Good carbonation. Somewhat dry finish. Malt hangs around awhile afterwards.

I would like to try this made into a Doppelbock. As this is pretty good beer. Note: Updating this review. This is one of the most drinkable beers available. Great session beer.

I've never liked the dunkel weizens as much as a good ole hefe, but this is pretty good. Heck, I like it better than Hacker-Pschorr's normal hefe. It tastes of dark bread and light toffee without any edge. Very very smooth with a touch of banana and clove. A heck of a drinker.

A-Opaque medium brown with good amount of head. Head diminishes to leave a fair bit of oily lacing.

S-Cloves, Banana, Wheat, Sweet/Gum

T-Wheat, bready, some banana, slight spice, well balanced

M-Great body with only a slight bit of carbonation, remains quite smooth

D-Good, great body, with pleasant smooth taste

Appearance: Poured with a small tan bubbly fizzy head that dissipated leaving very little lacing at the top of my glass. The beer is an orangish brown and is slightly hazy.

Smell: Sweet ripe banana and orange, caramelized sugar, tangy yeast, sweet and tangy wheat, and some roasted malt.

Taste: Sweet fruity banana, roasted malt, tangy wheat, sweet caramel, small metallic flavor, ending with a sweet ripe fruit sugar flavor.

Mouthfeel: Medium body, somewhat syrupy, a lot of carbonation, leaves mouth with a sticky coating.

Overall: Really good drinkability, a little high on the carbonation which takes away from the taste. Pretty sweet, but has a nice roasted character and tang from the yeast and wheat to help even things out a bit.

Poured a .5 liter bottle into a traditional Bavarian wheat beer glass.

A: Nice pour, with a dark mahogany color, and a decent amount of head.

S: Nose is full of caramel with some wheat notes and a touch of alcohol. About what one would expect for the style.

T&M: Starts off with a wheat like caramel sweetness and I also picked up on some chocolate and a faint hint of vanilla in there as well. Throughout the sip, the traditional flavors of a weizen beer are also present, with a nice touch of banana and ester like flavors from the yeast well. Finishes up with a nice ample hop bitterness that goes an excellent job of cleaning the palate and leaving you wanting another sip.

Mouthfeel is good for the style, with a medium level of carbonation, and pretty much spot on for the viscosity for the style of the beer; not thin, but not too heavy to prevent it from being a drinkable brew.

D & Notes: I have had this beer before, and I remember it being even better that the one I am drinking right now. The bottle says "produced on 03/07", which, if this is true, obviously means I don't have a fresh beer in front of me. I can taste the fact that the freshness isn't there any longer, but this is still a very good brew that is complex, and would be a great cold weather beer for somebody who is a hefeweizen fan, but doesn't necessarily want a winter brew that will weigh them down.

The beer pours a dark amber color with a thick frothy off-white head that fades to lacing. The aroma is decent. It boasts of wheat and caramel malts. It has a average wheat scent with an intense caramel odor. The taste is good. It has a strong dark wheat flavor with a honey type finish. It has a light caramel taste that mixes well and finishes smooth and sweet. The mouthfeel is excellent. It is a medium/full bodied beer with adequate carbonation; just right. This dunkel drinks great. It has a smooth taste that goes down easy.
