20oz pint at the Underground.
This beer appears a clear, bright bronzed amber hue, with one solid finger of tightly foamy, bordering on creamy beige head, which leaves some dense painted limestone wall lace around the glass as things slowly recede.
It smells of bready caramel malt, applesauce, a soft minerality, and understated earthy, leafy hops. The taste is more bready, cake-like roasted caramel malt, a slightly edgy wheaty graininess, a hint of banana chips, apple skins, weak clove/coriander spice, and weedy, earthy noble hops.
The bubbles are quite on the down-low, and nothing more, the body medium-light in weight, and generally smooth, in a soft water sort of manner. It finishes off-dry, the dark caramel malt and attendant semi-sweet breadiness holding sway, as the fruitiness and weak hops falter.
A decent dunkel, the sweetness definitely the star here, as outlined above. Good, overall, but the barest of upticks in ABV surely isn't enough to justify the hit to my tastebuds. Nice, but unfortunately readily forgettable.

Poured from a 330 mL bottle into a flared hefe glass with a moderate hand. Best by 11/13 according to the bottle. Hmmmm. That's next month. I recently sucked down a sixer of Hacker Pschorr's regular Weisse offering, so I wanted to try the darker counterpart.
A: Attractive dark amber body. Surprising clarity. Slightly off-white head, about 3 fingers worth. Died down to a thin coat after about 3 minutes and hung around for the full glass. Light lacing.
S: Dark fruit, raisins and malt coupled with a lighter presence of typical hefe scents - banana, subtle spice. Yeast. Hitting the mark pretty well here.
T: Malt and sweet caramel notes up front with a smooth transition into fruity hefe flavors. Toasted bread. Very light bitterness - barely perceivable - on the finish. A wheat tartness develops in the aftertaste after a few gulps. No alcohol presence.
M: Moderate to high carbonation. Bit prickly like a hefe. Body is somewhat lighter than I think the flavor profile calls for. Lacks the creaminess I enjoy in the style. Serviceable.
O: Tasty beer, but certainly not blowing me away. Perhaps a bit past its prime. I'm squeaking it in about a month before it's recommended date. Wish I had paid closer attention when I picked it up. I gave HP's Weisse very high marks, but this does not perform at quite the same level. Not bad though, I'll have to try it fresher.

A--Rich, hazy brown color with a thick, creamy head that fizzles off and doesn't really leave lacing. Looks exactly like you'd draw up a dunkle weiss.
S--Malty aroma, overall. Some banana and a trace of clove (less than I was expecting, at least). Some yeast/bready smells as well. Quite nice.
T--Follows the nose, mostly. A bunch of banana with some yeast/bread on top of that. Full malt with minimal hops, giving it a candy taste. A little dry at the end.
M--Rich & full. Carbonation gives it a refreshing feel and balances out the slight dryness.
O--This is the perfect example of the style. The Germans can really get a lot of mileage out of only four ingredients. Others would have to add a couple of ingredients to get this much of a varied flavor profile.
