Serving: 12oz bottle into pilsner (no weizen glass yet)
Served: 5 Aug 2013
Appearance: A hazy golden color that doesn't let much light through. A good three finger head that diminishes slowly to a sheen of frothy white bubbles. Nice suspension of yeast in the beer after agitating the bottle before pouring our the last quarter or so. Good lacing on the sides of the glass.
Smell: The banana is very assertive here, but not overpowering. The beer smells crisp and clean.
Taste: The banana notes really shine here. I don't get much clove or bubblegum or other flavors people describe when drinking hefeweizens. The taste is nicely balanced- the banana and yeasty notes play center stage, though crisper light malts help balance the setting. Not quite as sublime as Weihenstephaner (which I consider the gold standard of the style).
Mouthfeel: Carbonation is very nicely to style- small, smooth bubbles add just a bit more body to an already 'heavy' feeling beer, due to the yeast.
Overall: A fantastic hefeweizen that is widely available. This one is very good, and easily one of my top five, possibly one of my top three. This one isn't good enough to unseat Weihenstephaner, but it is a great representation of the style and is a beer I would certainly not hesitate to buy again or order when provided in a restaurant.
