Appearance: Pours with half a finger of head but quickly dissipates to the edges of the glass. Straw yellow color. Active carbonation is on the lower side for the style.

Smell: Straw and rounded grains warm up the drinker. Some more herbal and grass hop notes show up on the body. Light tropical fruit notes shine on the back end. Light caramel and amber malts round out the back end.

Taste: Nuts and semi-sweet malts greet the drinker. That pleasant malt backbone runs throughout and gives a nice backbone for the hops to shine on. Herbal fruits, straw, and prairie grass hop flavors show up on the body. Dry grainy finish is picked up throughout but really lingers on the finish.

Mouthfeel: Hops are pleasant but the dry graininess comes through a tough too aggressive for me. Regardless, pretty easy drinking in the end.

Overall: Decent Munich Helles here but there are others in the style I would go to first. Good easy summer drinker worth a shot if you can pick up a single in a mix six.

12oz bottle into a pilsner

A - An almost golden yellow that is perfectly clear. Quickly dissipating short head that leaves a similarly described lace.

S - The faint smell of pilsner malt.

T - Pilsner malt. A bit sweet with just a tinge of hops.

M - Unexpectedly full in the mouth despite all other attributes.

O - If the bottle didn't say "helles" I'd have sworn it was a slightly stronger version of a pilsner. Good body, but little taste. It's not bad at all- just doesn't live up to what I expect from something called helles.

This one reminds me more of a pilsner in flavor than a typical helles, which I think of as emphasizing the malt. Granted, the malt structure is more robust than an average pilsner, and the aroma is not as hoppy. So sort of a cross of the classic styles. And I like it. In fact, after taking a break of a couple weeks before returning to this, the last bottle of the 6-pack, I am really appreciating it at new levels. Much more than the sum of its parts. In the glass, it's a brilliant gold with a couple of fingers of bubbly head that sticks around at least a few minutes and does not leave much on the way down. The smells are rather subtle, like a muted pilsner but with more of a suggestion of malt.

Those who feverishly tick as part of the one-and-done club may easily fail to appreciate the greatness of this brew. My opinion of this beer, as with so many, has evolved with each serving. To my mind, this one gets it right as a wonderful compromise between flavor and body. The grassy and herbal hop presence is undeniable yet not to the point of histrionics, while the malts provide firm nutritional and textural support and even approach oktoberfest levels yet without the likelihood of Maillard fatigue. Maybe a little more aromatics would be nice, at least as a first impression booster, but in the end they would be irrelevant and possibly even an unwelcome distraction. I will be rushing out soon to find another fresh 6 or 12-pack.

Classic lager. Crisp, flavorful, and pleasantly refreshing. A very basic lager, this is truly the best of the Munich Oktoberfest six. Very similar to Hofbrau and a little lighter in taste than a Paulaner. Years of perfection have made this brew one of the best!
